Chapter 34: Opening Gambit
Creak!
Hallmark opened the door of the interrogation room, wiping his fist with a cloth and walking out.
Dale immediately poked his head into the interrogation room, before quickly retracting it and pretending to be calm.
“Sure enough, this bast*rd can’t avoid it either.”
“Hurry up and drag him out. It will not be easy to clean up after his blood dries up!”
The prison warden was distressed by the state of the floor. It had been clean and dry, but was now covered in blood stains.
Other prison soldiers rushed into the interrogation room to drag out the delirious assassin.
“Hey, put him on the rack!” the prison warden shouted.
Subsequently, two soldiers, each with a mop, went into the interrogation room to clean up the blood.
“General, what do we do with the other assassins?” Dale asked as he followed Hallmark.
Hallmark flung the cloth out and it landed into the trash can.
“Drag them to the execution ground and execute them!” Hallmark’s determined voice had a hint of chilliness.
Dale nodded. “Understood, General.”
“I’ll leave you in charge. I’m going to report this matter to the baron now!”
Hallmark walked out of the prison gates with his hands behind his back, down the street and into the city hall.
“Are you going to see the baron, General?” Lucy asked.
Hallmark nodded and said, “Yes, Miss Lucy.”
“The baron is in his study right now. You can find him there.”
Lucy left after she finished speaking.
Hallmark also didn’t stay around any longer. He turned around and headed straight to the study.
When he entered the study, Wang Lun was seated by the desk, reading books.
“My lord, the assassins have confessed!”
It wasn’t possible that Wang Lun didn’t know about the huge commotion in the city hall earlier. That was why Hallmark didn’t explain the situation from the start.
Wang Lun nodded and said, “What did they say?”
Hallmark said, “They are assassins sent from Baron Hawks of Seron City!”
Wang Lun seemed to have expected this result and indifferently said, “Kill them and send them back to Baron Hawks.”
Hallmark bowed, saying, “Yes, my lord!”
In fact, Wang Lun didn’t know that those people had already been ordered to be executed by Hallmark just now.
Hallmark chose the same night to send the corpses back to the enemy.
He personally led and drove the carriage and parked it at the bottom of Seron City under the disguise of a merchant.
It wasn’t until the second night that the carriage was discovered by the soldiers on guard.
The city gates opened and several soldiers came out and smelled an odor as they approached the carriage.
Although the smell wasn’t too strong, it was still too much for them as they had to cover their mouths and noses with their hands.
The carriage was slowly pulled into the city.
“What is this?” A junior captain walked over.
But when he reached a certain distance from the carriage, he immediately covered his mouth and nose.
“I don’t know what’s inside the carriage, but it sure stinks!”
“I’ve never smelled such a foul smell in my life!” the soldiers on the side complained.
The junior captain slowly approached the carriage and carefully lifted the huge cloth.
The scene that appeared in front of him made him jump backward subconsciously. His face turned pale and weak in a flash.
“What’s wrong?”
The soldier who didn’t see what happened asked in confusion.
But the junior captain was frozen in place, where even the instinctive action of covering his mouth and nose was no longer done.
Upon seeing such a scene, some soldiers took a few more steps backward.
Only a few bold ones went forward and lifted the cloth on the carriage.
“C-C-Corpses!”
One soldier yelled in a trembling voice.
Upon hearing these words, almost all the soldiers gathered around, but regretted it the next moment.
Inside the carriage were indeed corpses. They were bloody and some of their internal organs had spilled out and could clearly be seen.
Blech! Blech! Blech!
The soldiers instantly threw up their breakfast.
“Hurry up, report to the baron!”
The junior captain who finally returned to his senses shouted.
He knew the identity of the men inside. They were the assassins sent to Yale City, disguised as refugees.
***
“Bast*rd. He is clearly taunting me!”
The man’s eyes were bloodshot and full of anger. His face turned red.
He was Baron Hawks of Seron City.
“My lord, calm down. Now isn’t the time to go to war with Yale City yet.”
The one who spoke was an old man, the right-hand man of Hawks.
“Murphy, what do you think we should do?!” Hawks suppressed the anger inside him.
Murphy pursed his lips and said, “My lord, Yale City is now far above us in strength. What we can do now is wait for news from Lord Miller and see what happens.”
After this incident, Wang Lun sent someone to scout the news in Seron City.
He learned that Hawks didn’t dare act rashly and thereafter, Yale City had a great period of development.
In just half a month’s time, the overall appearance of Yale City changed entirely.
This was probably the most developed time since the construction of Yale City.
Wang Lun personally went to see the results of the construction.
Stepping into the street was a novel feeling. Not only were the old districts no longer paved by gravel, but the new districts were also paved by slate.
Wang Lun didn’t order the demolition of the original buildings apart from the ones that were about to collapse because the original buildings seemed more charming as they were interspersed among the modern ones.
“Bran, this is all your hard work!”
Wang Lun walked along the street, looking at the surrounding buildings. He couldn’t help but sigh in admiration.
Bran followed closely behind, saying, “My lord, you should take the main credit, followed by the construction workers. I am just a supervisor who didn’t make anything!”
“Hahaha, you’re too modest.” Wang Lun laughed.
Wang Lun raised his hands flatly. “If it weren’t for your hard work, how would these buildings be built?
“By the way, the construction of the marketplace has been completed, right?”
Bran bowed slightly and said, “Yes, my lord. It has begun running.”
Looking at the city he built up, the worries in Wang Lun’s mind dissipated in a flash.
Apart from the stores, all the small vendors had already moved to the marketplace and set up their fixed stores.
Due to the expansion of the city, there was more than one marketplace.
Yale City continued to develop in a good direction. But it was also due to that reason that refugees constantly arrived at the city.
Wang Lun didn’t refuse them. Although they arrived batch after batch, he didn’t need to care about the number of people with this level of development in the city.
Merchants and the outside world traded with them more frequently. With the new types of crop seeds brought back by Wang Lun, they earned a lot more money.
For the time being, no one plotted anything against the city hall.
Although the number of people in Yale City increased, they were able to provide for themselves with a large number of farmlands growing vegetables. Moreover, the vegetables were also being traded with the outside world.
