Summoning Total War - Chapter 55
Chapter 55: Charge! (Part 2)
Using some old secret technique to enter a state of rage, the brave Psaiyan warriors were able to beat the gnolls in a frontal fight on the battlefield for the first time!
Almost all the gnolls were going mad from all the things that were happening all of a sudden. They completely gave up on their defenses and were stunned by the Psaiyans’ frontal charging style! In just a few minutes, 20 to 30 gnolls were defeated by the Psaiyans’ weapons. However, the advantage of the gnolls’ larger numbers started to show. Under the command of a significantly larger male gnoll, the gnolls’ encirclement started to shrink, and they tried to use their advantage in numbers to reduce the force of these warriors’ violent charge. As long as they could trap them in place, they would be able to kill them somehow or another since they had power in numbers!
However, at this time, the sound of the galloping horses could be heard once again!
. . . . . . . . . . . .
A change appeared before Murphy’s eyes!
He could actually see that in the center of the battlefield, the warriors that were visibly far more muscular than the other Psaiyans had traces of clouds emanating from their bodies. These clouds coalesced into one, and its color gradually started to change, eventually turning to a blood-red color.
Above these clouds, a man covered in animal skin and holding a giant axe appeared!
He had a really stolid expression on his face, and muscles like steel. He was ferociously angry, and lifted the giant axe with one hand, roaring loudly.
At that instant, Murphy actually had the illusion that he was looking upon an ancient hero!
The violent Psaiyan warriors began to suffer casualties. A Psaiyan warrior who used a spiked rod was trapped between two gnolls. Shortly after, his head was smashed in by a male gnoll with a mace.
He could see the blood-like mist in the air grow thicker.
A vague, dark-red figure appeared from within the blood mist. It struggled for a bit, then slowly stood up. In mid-air, it walked toward the loud, roaring figure that was holding the giant axe and eventually ended up merging with it!
What was this?
At that moment, Murphy was surprised and full of dozens of questions.
However, time didn’t allow for him to ponder this any longer. If he didn’t initiate an attack quickly, he was afraid that the Psaiyans were going to die soon in just a couple of minutes!
He no longer had time to observe the changes taking place in mid-air. He pulled out the sword at his waist and roared. He launched into a charging attack and brought the General Guards along with him! The sound of galloping horses came from behind the gnolls, and before the violent Psaiyan warriors could be intercepted by the gnolls, the cavalries launched their charge at the same time.
The direction that the cavalries were charging toward was the same direction that the violent Psaiyan warriors had been charging toward earlier on. Two waves of people from both front and back launched a pincer attack at a point in the gnolls’ encirclement.
In just an instant, the point of encirclement suddenly collapsed!
Utors’ chest heaved violently, and his heavy breathing sounded like bellows. Even after awakening his ancestor’s power, the fierce and high-intensity battle had inevitably taken an immense toll on his body. However, the moment he heard the galloping horses, a strong rush of energy surged through his body once again, and adrenaline pumped through his veins, and his blood raced.
He knew that if he could just persevere for a little while longer!
Then he would be able to win.
He grabbed onto the corpse of a male gnoll who already had its head chopped off and held onto its leg with one hand. Then, he twirled it around and hit all the gnolls who were gathered around him and rushed toward the most muscular head gnoll, who was wearing a half-body armor.
The violent power of his ancestors they had awakened could only last a little while longer. He had to find some way to kill that head gnoll!
The huge bloody flesh weapon was no less lethal than their heavy weapons. After he violently whipped it through the air, its force multiplied, and he used the gnoll corpse to launch a sweeping attack that covered a wide range. The whistling sound of the wind was so terrifying that all the male gnolls around them didn’t have the courage to step forward. The other surviving violent Psaiyan warriors followed along and dropped the weapons with the curved edges from their hands. In their place, they grabbed a gnoll corpse and used it as a stick to smash everything in their surroundings.
. . . . . . . . . . . .
The gnolls fell apart.
They didn’t fall apart in the face of the violent Psaiyan warriors but in the face of the cavalries that were rushing in and galloping toward them while taking advantage of the cover of the night.
Although the violent Psaiyan warriors were strong, the gnolls believed that as long as they could besiege them, it would only be a matter of time before they killed them. However, in the face of these galloping cavalries that were headed right toward them, they were terrified. They didn’t have the courage to go and face these cavalries, which were charging after them with their own flesh and blood, because the gnolls knew that if they were to face these cavalries head-on, if they didn’t die, they would be crippled. In the era of cold weapons, the momentum and force generated from a charging cavalry were incomparable and unrivaled!
This was true even if it was a charge into a Greek spear formation!
Although the cavalries would suffer a defeat when facing such a spear formation, at the moment of contact during the charge, it was almost certain that the first and second row of spearmen would inevitably die!!!
When hit by a horse running at high speed, the resulting impact would be enough to break one’s rib cage and pierce right through one’s lungs.
In the era of cold weapons, an injury like this was practically incurable.
Hence, although the spear formation could hold the cavalries back, at the moment of impact, there were many possible things that could happen in that instant! The first round of contact from both sides would pretty much mean certain death for both parties! At that point, only the brave could hold on and achieve victory!
Regardless of which side was the one who retreated first out of fear, the other side was going to be the one who would achieve victory.
This was also one of the reasons why in the era of cold weapons, the cavalries had kept rising up to the top! In the face of cavalries rushing toward them, the enemy knew that this was a situation where they were bound to die unless they held their ground and didn’t retreat. Only a soldier with strong convictions would be able to do that!
In that situation, the cavalries had a natural advantage.
This was because there was no possible way the cavalries could stop. Behind them were a thousand other horses, so if they stopped, they would be the ones who would get trampled to death! At that point in time, the choice would be given to the infantry of whether they could hold their ground, and this was dependent on whether their resolve to give up their lives was strong enough. In the final battle of , the fear that the orcs showed when the cavalries charged at them was proof of this point. Once the first line of defense collapsed, the cavalries would never give their opponents a chance to reorganize their defenses. Then all that would be left was just the enemy’s total collapse followed by a massacre!
Something needs to be mentioned here. Before the cavalries entered this charge, there was something very important that had to be done first, and that was covering the horse’s eyes with a blindfold.
. . . . . . . . . . . .
As the cavalries charged into the gnoll formation in a triangular formation, more than a dozen gnolls were cut down on the spot.
Afterward, the cavalries crossed the weak gnoll encirclement and turned their horses around to begin a second round of charging.
Eventually, by the time Murphy was preparing for a third round of charging…
The gnolls had already completely collapsed.
Their leaders fell under the weapons of the violent Psaiyan warriors, and without the command of their leader, the gnolls lost all courage to go against the cavalries!
As a race lacking in weapons and equipment, without their spears, the gnolls’ chances of winning would be slim if they were to go against the cavalries.
The battle was over.
There was a thick bloody smell in the air.
Both sides began to treat their injuries and finish off the gnolls that hadn’t died yet. As for the gnolls that had escaped, Murphy no longer had an interest in chasing after them and killing them.
The General Guards’ losses weren’t that severe.
Six knights suffered minor injuries, and there weren’t any casualties. However, eight of the horses died, and almost half of the horses were injured.
This was the light cavalry’s flaw. In a situation where the horses weren’t equipped with armor, the losses would be huge.
Those kinds of losses might even be worse than losing personnel.
