Supreme Pharmacist System - Chapter 51
Chapter 51: Biopsy Specimen Processing
Zhou Wen was very pleased about the abilities he acquired after he upgraded the systematic anatomy course.
Even though it did not elevate his ability to dissect the human body, or animals and plants, it gave him a pair of flexible, agile hands, which was equal to elevating his ability to dissect.
Just like when he was peeling the mango, his hands could obviously sense the tenacity and thickness of the peel when the blade sliced into the fruit such that he could peel the skin off easily without hurting the flesh of the fruit inside.
On the other hand, this ability could also be applied when he dissected a fruit fly, a white mouse, a lizard, and also a rabbit, later on.
This was the most direct advantage brought by the systematic anatomy course upgrade.
Soon afterward, Zhou Wen peeled two mangoes, three kiwis, and two apples just to test out his dissection technique.
Just as he was preparing to peel the third apple, Shen Xue and Zuo Mengmeng came back.
Zuo Mengmeng was startled by the sight of Zhou Wen standing at the balcony with a fruit knife in his hand. “You… what are you doing?”
“Uh… Peeling fruits?”
Shen Xue and Zuo Mengmeng walked over after they changed into house slippers and saw the peeled fruits in the plate placed on the round tea table.
Zuo Mengmeng was overjoyed, so she said, “Whoa… Zhou Wen, you’ve actually peeled so many fruits for us… Why are you doing this to please us? Tell me… are you up to no good?”
Zhou Wen said, “Uh, no…”
“Alright, there’s no need to deny, I know…”
Zuo Mengmeng stretched out her hand and grabbed a juicy, glossy, green fruit from the plate and gulped it down in two to three bites. She said with a pleased expression, “Wow, that is delicious. Is that a golden kiwi?”
Upon saying that, Zuo Mengmeng smacked her lips and said, “Despite my age, no one has ever peeled kiwi for me in my lifetime. Zhou Wen, I shall give you the permission to court my Little Xue in view of your earnestness.”
Shen Xue gave her a soft punch and said in slight embarrassment, “You’re bribed with just a fruit?”
Zuo Mengmeng turned her head to look at Shen Xue with her huge, bright, lively eyes rolling as she said, “This is not just the matter of a kiwi, but is his attitude. Attitude! Do you know what’s that? Zhou Wen peeled fruits while he waited for your return so you can have it when you’re back. This attitude is much better than a thousand sweet words. If there’s a guy who is willing to treat me like this, I will yield to him right away.”
Shen Xue was blushing from Zuo Mengmeng’s remarks. She said, “You’re eating without washing your hands again. That’s so unhygienic; go and wash your hands, quick.”
As she was speaking, Shen Xue tugged Zuo Mengmeng along.
Zuo Mengmeng did not forget to wave at Zhou Wen and called out, “Handsome man Zhou, we’re coming back immediately to have more! Leave some for us.”
Zhou Wen laughed while nodding. “Mmhmm, I will.”
Zhou Wen returned the fruit knife to the kitchen and returned to the balcony to smoke and use his phone.
Zuo Mengmeng, who claimed that she was coming back ‘immediately’, had only returned with Shen Xue after one hour.
They were dressed in matching pajamas and shorts with towel caps wrapped around their heads. They giggled as they walked over.
Zhou Wen sized both of them up. He discovered that both of them had very good figures other than the slight difference in their height. Shen Xue had long legs, a fair complexion, and a chubby figure, while Zuo Mengmeng, albeit petite, had an excellent figure. The part of her body that was supposed to be voluptuous was voluptuous, and the part of her body that was supposed to be bouncy was bouncy too.
Zuo Mengmeng walked over and picked up a slice of watermelon, which she proceeded to pass to Shen Xue. Then, she picked up a slice for herself and asked as she chewed, “I heard that there were many expert professors that came to attend your oral examination today…”
They chatted about the oral examination event for a while when Zhou Wen suddenly remembered the Biotype Scar Spray.
It had been about 30 hours since yesterday afternoon and he had not checked the effect yet.
He turned his body to the side and raised his right leg, rolled up the hem of his pants, and took a glance. He was pleasantly surprised at once. The hyperpigmentation left behind by the healed wound resulting from the exhaust pipe burn had already vanished completely.
Zuo Mengmeng noticed that Zhou Wen was still fine when they were chatting, but he suddenly stared at his own leg and smiled. She asked out of curiosity, “What are you smiling at?”
“Huh?” Zhou Wen was suddenly jolted back to reality; he chuckled and said, “I produced a bottle of Biotype Scar Spray…”
The scar spray was not like the pain-relief medication because it was only meant for external use. As a result, he did not have to worry about others finding out about it too much. As long as it was not for sale or profit-making, it would not be an issue.
Zuo Mengmeng widened her eyes in surprise and said, “Is that for real? Is the effect that good?”
Zhou Wen nodded, raised his right leg, and revealed his smooth calf with delicate complexion. “This area here used to have a burn scar before. There’s nothing there now.”
Zuo Mengmeng stretched out her neck to take a look and then extended her hand to touch him. “Whoa, your skin is really smooth.”
Zhou Wen was speechless, and so was Shen Xue.
Zuo Mengmeng giggled and said, “What? I’m only expressing my emotions. Oh right, there’s a scar on Shen Xue’s thigh. She was hit by a car during her second year in university. Can you remove it?”
“Uh… Let’s give it a try then.”
Shen Xue rejected in embarrassment, “Yikes, no need…”
“Come, come; we’re not asking you to take off your pants! What’s there to be embarrassed of?” As she was speaking, Zuo Mengmeng pulled up the right hem of Shen Xue’s shorts and revealed her toned, firm thigh.
On the other hand, there was a narrow, long, white scar in the middle of Shen Xue’s outer thigh about the length of five centimeters. Zhou Wen could see some muscles bulging around the scar, perhaps due to the uneven application of medication in the past.
Zhou Wen got up to take the spray from his room and then applied it on Shen Xue’s scar.
He could smell the vanilla-scented shower gel on Shen Xue’s skin due to their unusual proximity. It smelled extremely pleasant.
Zuo Mengmeng, who was squatting by his side, blew at the scar and asked, “That’s all?”
“Mmhmm!”
“It doesn’t seem to be that effective, huh…”
Zhou Wen had a dream that night. He dreamt that two snowy-white shadows opened the door and walked into his room; then, those shadows giggled and climbed into his bed.
Their faces turned into Shen Xue’s face for a while and then turned into Zuo Mengmeng’s for a while too.
Then, he took a close look, and the shadows turned into the enchanting, seductive Sister Sun.
Zhou Wen jolted awake from shock…
…
Zhou Wen headed to the PCR team to show his presence in the morning the next day.
There was nothing much for him to do for the time being, and there was still an adequate amount of DNA available so he went downstairs to the specimen preparation team.
He thought about it properly on the way to work this morning. It was surely unrealistic for him to carry out the specimen test mission independently. Even if he was willing, the specimen testing team’s people would never agree to let him do it. So, the only way to do it was with someone’s guidance.
As for whether the system would recognize his effort, he could only find out after doing it.
Sun Jing was in the small office, coincidentally, so Zhou Wen explained his intention to her straightforwardly upon entering the room.
With that being said, Sun Jing was caught in a dilemma.
Specimen processing was different from viral testing, whether in its flow, procedures, skills, or techniques. If the processing was not managed properly, it would be rather troublesome. For example, it would require a new biopsy specimen to be taken again. It was highly possible that it would cause a delay in the patient’s treatment.
Even though Zhou Wen learned about the process a little, his proficiency level was not up to the standards.
It was only that…
Sun Jing pondered for a moment before she made the decision to fulfill Zhou Wen’s request.
Firstly, it was due to their very close relationship.
Secondly, Zhou Wen’s skill in managing viruses and also DNA was overly impressive, so he had a rather strong hands-on ability.
Thirdly, if Zhou Wen were to pick up the skill, she could invite him to help the team out when their team was busy in the future.
However, it was still his first time doing it, after all. She could not allow him to perform it on a specimen that needed to be taken out surgically such as a stomach, liver, or intestines; she could only let him do it on a smaller specimen such as a biopsy sample taken from endoscopy.
On the other hand, she agreed that it should not be a problem. As mentioned by Zhou Wen, as long as he had a master’s guidance by his side throughout the process, he should be fine.
At the thought of this, Sun Jing turned on her laptop and checked. She muttered, “Biopsy specimen… Biopsy specimen…”
Zhou Wen was watching from the side. He pointed at a name in the center soon and asked, “How about this? Is it okay?”
“Which one?” Sun Jing looked at the area where Zhou Wen’s finger was pointing. “Feng Qingli, 62 years old, pancreas biopsy sample, fixed time…”
“Sure, it’s her then!”
Sun Jing printed a copy of the test form and then she stood up and brought Zhou Wen out of the office.
They arrived at the biopsy laboratory and called over a laboratory technician who was about 30 years old.
“Yang Jiawei, this is Zhou Wen. Teach him how to perform the pathological examination. This is the test form.”
“Sure, Team Leader Sun. I’ve got this.” Yang Jiawei took the test form and read through it before he brought Zhou Wen into the laboratory.
Yang Jiawei asked, “Have you ever learned about specimen processing tests before?”
Zhou Wen nodded. “Just a little.”
“Sure, then we shall proceed from there.”
Yang Jiawei searched for Feng Qingli’s fixed specimen and said, “When the fixation process is fully complete, the next step is to extract. Place the specimen into the dehydrator for dehydration, clearing, and paraffin impregnation. It’s slightly different from a needle biopsy…”
While he was speaking, Yang Jiawei began to guide Zhou Wen…
It came as a surprise to Zhou Wen that the newbie ‘apprentice’ had exceedingly strong hands-on ability. His extraction technique was so skilled that even a laboratory technician older than Zhou Wen would feel inferior.
Yang Jiawei asked in a daze, “Have you performed a specimen processing before this?”
Zhou Wen chuckled and said, “No?”
Yang Jiawei refused to believe it, but he did not press on either.
He continued to teach Zhou Wen after lunch.
“After the specimen is embedded in paraffin, we begin embedding, sectioning, staining, mounting… Once the encapsulation is complete, we begin examining the quality of the capsule. We must make sure that the qualified section is passed to the doctor in the pathological diagnosis department for reading and diagnosing…”
Yang Jiawei was very relaxed throughout the process.
The apprentice, Zhou Wen, was extremely intelligent such that he basically understood everything that Yang Jiawei told him at once. In addition, Zhou Wen’s hands-on ability was so strong that there was no need for him to be overly concerned. Zhou Wen was much more impressive than those internship students that he previously guided.
At half-past four in the afternoon, the section was completed smoothly.
The ‘reading and diagnosing’ part that followed next was not Zhou Wen’s task anymore.
The act of ‘reading and diagnosing’ was a meticulous task that relied purely on a human being’s intelligence that no other machine could replace.
The clinician had to combine clinical pathology, imaging, and other test results, as well as the section appearance and microscopic appearance et cetera to make a diagnosis.
Due to the fact that the pathological result would directly influence the choice of the patient’s treatment, the pathological diagnosis applied to the system had three levels to ensure the precision of each pathology report.
At last, every qualified pathology report would be verified and signed before being sent to the doctor and patient.
Zhou Wen followed Yang Jiawei to send the section to the diagnosis room. Soon afterward, Zhou Wen heard the prompt sound of the mission being accomplished in his ears…
