Chapter 44: Have We Met Before?
She felt like she should say something but she did not know what else to say.
She was also afraid that Song Boyan would feel that she was trying to get close to him.
However, she did want to get closer to him.
Song Boyan was drinking from his bottle. At the same time, he was looking at Tang Li too.
She lowered her eyes and her eyelashes fluttered a little as she clasped her hands together, picking at her left forefinger with her right forefinger.
She seemed troubled.
He closed the lid of his water bottle and put it back at its original place. “How has college been recently?”
“It’s… fine.”
Song Boyan appeared as if he had not seen through her lies. He still addressed her with a gentle voice. “Is there any conflict with your classmates?”
“It’s fine. I have just moved to another hostel.” Tang Li’s reply was filled with both truth and lie. “Now, I’m living further from the lecture halls. So, I take it as a chance for me to strengthen my body by walking more.”
“Hasn’t there been a mess on the college’s website?”
Tang Li remained quiet.
Recently, she had become a popular girl on the college’s website. She never thought that Song Boyan would know about that incident.
In the end, Tang Li voiced out her doubt after being questioned by Song Boyan like that. “Have we met before?” She paused for a while and looked at the man in front of her. She continued speaking, “Or, should I ask, did you know my mother?”
In her former life, she had met her mother’s old friend in the capital after a few years.
Hence, it was not impossible if she met with her mother’s friend in this life.
If she was right about it, all her doubts would be cleared. It would also explain why Song Boyan did not get rid of her when she had blocked his car and asked for his help in her former life. On the other hand, he had even allowed Ji Ming to help resolve Han Jifeng’s case.
It also explained why Song Boyan had closed the drapes and helped her on the balcony that night.
Moreover, Song Boyan had appeared and helped her when Old Lady Li scolded her in front of everyone.
He had even helped to bandage her wound when she was hit by a bike.
It seemed like the kind of deeds that an old friend of her mother would do for her.
In fact, Song Boyan was the Minister of Finance. Even if he was a Buddhist, it seemed improbable that he would help her and only her every other day.
She also did not think that he would do all of those things for her because of the Li family.
Li Wenyan had never treated her as his daughter so, why would the others be nice to her?
Song Boyan replied, “Yes, I did meet with your mother once in Dian Nan a few years ago.”
Tang Li felt a pain in her heart when she heard that.
It was the first time she had heard anybody mentioning her mother in this life.
Her mother, Tang Yin, was a forbidden subject in the Li family.
She assumed that her mother was not a nice woman before. Now that she knew the truth, she felt that her mother was a victim too even if she was a homewrecker. Her mother was unaware of all of those things back then.
That morning, she had nearly questioned her father whether he had ever felt anything for her mother when she saw Li Wenyan and Ou Yangqian holding their hands in front of her.
But, she had managed to keep quiet about it.
The person who yearned for that answer was no longer alive.
What she should do was not to plead for an explanation from Li Wenyan.
She should send him to meet her mother.
It was her mother’s business whether she wanted to forgive him or not.
There was a strong obsession with the past in her. However, she concealed her emotion quite well but it still did not escape Song Boyan’s eyes.
“Are you accustomed to living with the Li family now?”
Tang Li bit her lower lip but did not reply.
“If you have anything that you can’t tell your father, just let me know. I can talk to him for you.”
Tang Li looked up when she heard Song Boyan’s gentle and deep voice. She found herself staring straight into Song Boyan’s calm dark eyes. Although she could not see through him, she did not avoid his eyes this time.
