Chapter 37
***
The maids looked at each other. It was comfortable serving Llewelyn. She didn’t care if they made a mistake, or if they neglected their work. They didn’t consider it ‘ignoring’ her. No matter what they did, she didn’t feel they were worthy of getting angry over. They also knew that Llewelyn didn’t see them as anything but tools.
Llewelyn changed her maids frequently. These were new maids that had been brought in a year ago.
The maids were happy at Llewelyn’s indifference, but they had nothing to say. All of Llewellyn’s comments were true.
Besides, they ignored Llewelyn’s commands and laughed at her behind her back. The maids knew it well. Even though they thought that Llewelyn might be hurt, they murmured their complaints.
“Princess, please take care of us just this once. Rosalie is fatherless. She has a sick brother. If her ankle is cut off, he will die. We know that we neglected the Princess. Even if you punish us, we will accept it sweetly. She may have been ignorant of the Princess, but she was not rude.”
“…”
“Please save the life of that poor child.”
When the maid asked politely, Llewelyn gripped her book tightly. She frowned deeply and stared at the maid. Llewelyn let out a heavy sigh and got up. The Princess did not use abusive language, nor did she wield a sword.
“As I said before, I can’t guarantee that I will succeed.”
What made her get up was a single word, ‘help’. Her decision changed so easily that the maids stared at Llewelyn in amazement.
‘Why do they have such useless thoughts?’
Llewelyn remembered the young servant she had taken with her in the past. He was a child with warm brown eyes. He smiled happily, saying that his eyes and Llewelyn’s hair were the same color.
He was always full of mistakes, but she liked his clarity, so she kept him by her side. Because all of the child’s actions were pure.
When all the misfortunes happened, the child comforted Llewelyn. Even when his friend died while stealing food for her, he grieved and stayed closer to her than before. However, he was noticed by Pamela and died.
Many maids did. Llewelyn’s maids were either kicked out or killed. The rest of the maids created an evil and heartless picture of Llewelyn.
*
Llewelyn arrived at Vivian’s residence.
“You’re here.”
Vivian was looking at Llewelyn with a strange smirk. Nearby was a maid, kneeling on the ground and crying.
Llewelyn wasn’t looking at her, instead her stare was directed towards the man standing in front of the maid. He was a decent-looking young man with dark blond hair. Llewelyn immediately remembered that face. Once upon a time, when she begged Pamela to save a maid, he was one of the nobles who watched.
“I didn’t know the Princess would step in.”
He smiled and greeted Llewelyn. His politeness was a mockery.
“What is the situation?”
Llewelyn glanced at the maid, Rosalie. She furrowed her eyebrows. The back of the maid’s hand was bare, as if it had been trampled on. Rosalie looked up at Llewelyn with a pathetic expression.
“This maid stepped on my skirt while moving the laundry.”
“Aha.”
“There are separate passages for nobles and servants, so walking in a place where only nobles can enter is the first offence, carelessly stepping on the hem of my skirt is the second offence, and the third is not giving a proper apology.”
Llewelyn asked Vivian.
“So, you mean to cut off her ankle?”
“Yes. I was about to cut off both of her feet and her chubby tongue, but I am being generous by cutting only one foot.”
As Vivian spoke triumphantly, Llewelyn was thrilled. She approached Rosalie, who looked at her as if she were a saint.
“Rosalie.”
“Y-yes, Princess.”
In an instant, a sharp hand struck Rosalie’s delicate cheek. The maid and the Red Knights who were following Llewelyn flinched. The blow was so hard that Rosalie fell to the ground. To make matters worse, there was blood dripping from her lip.
“What rudeness is this to those in the Palace?”
Llewelyn said calmly. Rosalie didn’t know what she was thinking, so she got goosebumps. Llewelyn looked down at her as usual with an indifferent expression. Rosalie trembled. Maybe her death would be an example.
It was embarrassing. But there were masters who killed maids if they made a mistake in front of someone else. For the first time, Rosalie was terrified of Llewelyn.
Llewelyn looked up at Vivian and said.
“It was my maid’s fault for stepping on Miss Maud’s skirt.”
“Yeah. That is why I am punishing her.”
“But Miss Maud, the first offence doesn’t make sense. This is not a designated area.”
That meant that this was not a path for nobles nor servants.
“You may not have come to the Palace often, but the Royal Palace is not divided like a regular aristocratic mansion, with sections for workers and nobles. Unlike a narrow mansion, the Royal Palace is very spacious, so movement does not overlap much.”
At Llewelyn’s point, Vivian frowned. Was this an area anyone could go to? At this point, she had to step back, but Vivian did not back down. Hearing words like, ‘You may not have come to the Palace often’ from Llewelyn, who was born and raised in the Royal Palace, made her stomach boil.
“I see. Perhaps I got it wrong. But it is true that this maid stepped on my skirt and did not apologize properly.”
As Llewelyn looked at Rosalie, Rosalie stuttered.
“I-I got tripped by the knight over there…”
“You’re rude, framing me for your mistake?”
Allen was angry when Rosalie pointed at him.
Llewelyn sighed. It was unfortunate for Rosalie. Even if she told the truth, it didn’t matter. It was because people took the side of the aristocrats rather than the commoners.
“The girl has said that before. Instead of apologizing, she was talking nonsense like this!”
“…”
Rosalie should have anticipated such a situation and reacted more sensibly. Seeing that she didn’t say a word, it seemed that Vivian was right, and she didn’t apologize.
“I have to cut off her foot right now. No, I will cut out the tongue that insulted me.”
Allen drew his sword. Seeing this, the corners of Llewelyn’s lips rose slightly. She stepped in front of Rosalie.
“Princess, get out of the way. Don’t know what punishment is given to a servant who frames nobility?”
He swung his sword threateningly. Rosalie trembled.
“It is the right of nobles to punish their servants. But it is also forbidden by law to punish servants of other nobility.”
“Are you going to favor your maid over the people of the Maud family?”
“I’m reasoning with you.”
Llewelyn stood up straight. Rosalie cupped her cheek and stared at Llewelyn’s back. No matter how young and ignorant she was, she knew what was going on. Llewelyn was defending her!
“I have the right to educate my maid.”
“Princess!”
“It is my negligence that her education is wrong. And I apologize.”
Llewelyn bowed her head easily. The knights and maids who saw it turned white. It was improper for a Princess to bow her head to a nobleman. The arrogant Princess bowed too easily to nobles. Vivian smirked coldly.
“Indeed, you are a warm Princess.”
“It was true that I got down on my knees and prayed to save a maid.”
“Looks like the rumors were true.”
Llewelyn calmly affirmed the nonsensical rumor. The maids looked at each other. The Princess? Really? On her knees? If they heard it before, they wouldn’t have believed it. But now, Llewellyn was bowing her head.
“With tears in her eyes, I heard that she begged the Queen. The noble Princess knelt down and prayed every time her maids and servants died, right? Because she was always on her knees, her Thessalian silk dresses were torn to shreds. Unfortunate.”
Perhaps because of shame, Llewelyn kept her head bowed. Vivian and Allen backed off at this point. It was because their so-called goal of discouraging Llewelyn had been achieved. Llewelyn slapped her maid on the cheek and bowed to them. Llewelyn had hurt her own reputation.
“I will accept the Princess’ apology.”
At Allen’s words, Llewelyn straightened her back. Was she miserable? She couldn’t raise her head even though she was standing upright. Allen and Vivian enjoyed a satisfying victory. Then, Llewelyn spoke.
“Sir Dane.”
“Yes, Princess?”
“Execute Sir Allen Maud.”
Llewelyn gave the order coldly.
