Chapter 12: She Is Not A Pushover

Rong Yan had no idea that she was being targeted.
She tossed and turned in the guest room of the Country Garden. She barely slept for the whole night and woke up with a pair of dark circles under her eyes.
“Good morning, Miss Rong,” the housekeeper greeted warmly.
Rong Yan returned the greeting. “Morning.”
She hesitated for a moment before asking, “Is the driver here?”
The housekeeper smiled obsequiously and said, “It’s too early. The young master has not risen. The driver usually arrives at nine. Miss Rong can have breakfast with the young master before leaving.”
Breakfast with Li Shengxiao?
Disbelief crossed Rong Yan’s face.
Ever since the man asked whether she had a boyfriend, her heart felt as if it was suspended in midair. After a sleepless night, she had no appetite for breakfast.
Rong Yan pictured how breakfast with Li Shengxiao would go, then said, “I think I’ll find my own way home. It’s morning now so it should be safe. No need to trouble the driver and Mr. Li.”
She turned to leave right after.
“This…” The housekeeper was dumbfounded—he did not expect her to pull such a stunt. The young master was still asleep. What should he do? If the young master woke up and found Miss Rong gone, what would he say?
Despite the housekeeper’s insistent begging, Rong Yan was determined to leave. He watched as the woman grabbed her bag and walked away.
“What now? Miss Rong is leaving.”
“I’ll report to the young master.”
“But, Chairman Li…”
After a few minutes, the housekeeper’s clunky footsteps could be heard as he bounded upstairs. He knocked on the master room door, waking the man inside from his dream.
…
The morning sun shone brightly, bathing the flora in its warmth. The flowers woke from their slumber and the grass stretched toward the light source. Rong Yan walked along the path that wound around the villa. She took in a breath of fresh air and stretched her body.
Once she was out of the private property, she searched for a taxi and headed straight for Universal Studios.
Since Rong Weiwei won the Golden Eagle Award, the company was also placed under the spotlight. There was a flurry of activity outside the tall building.
Rong Yan got down from the car and proceeded to buy a cap. Cap on, she found a corner to wait.
She was shielded from the sunlight by some green canopy cover. The shadow casted gave her a cool and distant vibe.
Finally, a Mercedes-Benz SUV approached the building. The paparazzi squatting outside the Universal Studios building quickly flocked to the vehicle.
The car opened.
Rong Weiwei exited the vehicle. She was wearing a Free People fairy skirt from the latest season’s collection. The nude color went well with her skin tone while the sheer material piqued everyone’s curiosity.
Rong Yan tipped her cap. Her beautiful black eyes shone like a predator who had caught sight of its prey. She stared at the actress who had the attention of the whole crowd and smiled.
The paparazzi outside the company had thoroughly blocked the entrance into the building.
“Vivi, the mysterious bouquet you received at yesterday’s event, was it from Young Master Shi?”
“Vivi, have you guys decided on a wedding date? I hear Chairman Shi’s returning to the country soon. Have the parents set a date to meet?”
“Vivi, Universal Studios recently bought the rights for the famous Returning Home. As the upcoming star of the company, will you be partaking in it? The series is a public favourite and your fans are looking forward to your performance. What do you think?”
Rong Weiwei basked in the spotlight with a smile on her face. Her bodyguard was careful to make sure none of the fans could reach her. Suddenly, an agile figure weaved through the crowd and made a beeline for her.
“Rong Yan…”
As the words left her mouth, Rong Yan was already before her in a few quick steps. Right before everyone’s eyes, Rong Yan seized Rong Weiwei and delivered a loud slap across the powdered face.
Smack!
The slap echoed and silenced the crowd.
Rong Weiwei was stunned by the attack. She cradled her face and forced down the anger in her belly. She put on her best victimized face and stared at Rong Yan—she could spin a story in front of the press.
Rong Yan gripped Rong Weiwei’s jaw. Her eyes were cold as ice as she leaned in to whisper into the younger woman’s ear, “Rong Weiwei, it’s only been a few years but you’ve become daring. In the past, you only schemed and plotted. Now, you don’t mind getting your hands dirty. Did you enjoy pushing me into oncoming traffic yesterday? Sad that I’m still here without any injury?
