Chapter 2: Little Tadpole Searching For a Father

The commotion outside had nothing to do with the entertainment industry.
Rong Yan had just successfully passed her interview for KT Entertainment. As she exited the building, her phone exploded into a cacophony of sounds.
She took a look at the caller ID and smartly kept the phone away from her ear as she answered, “Hello?”
A male voice roared from the speaker. “Demon Rong, what are you up to? Why are you back in the country all of a sudden? Also, didn’t you say the baby was away at a summer camp? Explain! Why is Rong Duidui at Mrs. Li’s birthday celebration, calling Li Shengxiao Daddy? What’s going on?”
More importantly, why was there a resemblance between Rong Duidui and Li Shengxiao?
Rong Yan nearly went deaf from the man’s shouts. Uncaring about her image, she rubbed her ear and scurried into a corner that saw less foot traffic. She replied, “It’s just as you see, the little tadpole is finding his father.”
Lin Xibei almost laughed at her words. “Don’t avoid the topic. I’m asking you, what’s your relationship with Li Shengxiao? Why have you returned and interviewed with an entertainment company? Demon Rong, what are you hiding?”
“Definitely not an aphrodisiac.”
“Rong Yan!”
Sensing the man was at his limits, Rong Yan quickly changed her tone. She explained sensibly, “My bad, my bad. Li Shengxiao and I… I guess you could say we’re f*ck buddies? One night stand? We don’t have a relationship now.”
If they wanted to be strict about their genealogy, Li Shengxiao had to call her his great aunt. Yes… To avoid complications, she should not be involved with Li Shengxiao.
“Then why did you send Rong Duidui to him? Have you lost your mind?”
Lin Xibei knew how hard Rong Yan worked to raise her son. There was no way she would trade her son for money.
“I know you still have your wits, so don’t tell me tall tales.”
If it was anyone else, Rong Yan would have responded with an amusing white lie. Lin Xibei had helped her a lot when she left Beijing years ago. She was homeless in a foreign land for some time—Lin Xibei helped her find shelter and loaned her some money for survival. She paid him back the amount later but the personal favor was not something that could be repaid with money.
She pursed her lips and casually leaned against the wall. Her fingers habitually searched for a non-existent cigarette. She had quit smoking a while back. She pulled her hand back as frustration flashed in her eyes. “Why can’t you just accept it as an act of temporary insanity? Do you know about Rong Duidui’s illness?”
“Yes. And?” Of course Lin Xibei knew. When Baby Rong was around two years old, he was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. Rong Yan spent the past two years in search of money and doctors that could cure him.
A thought crossed Lin Xibei’s mind. “Are you saying Li Shengxiao has the cure?”
“The Li family holds the treatment, a weekly dose can temporarily keep the illness at bay. I did some digging, the medication they have was discovered by a group of top international researchers who specialize in hereditary diseases. Other than Li Shengxiao, no one has access to the treatment.” Rong Yan sounded desolate.
If there was an alternative, she would not have given her son away—the adorable child whom she worked hard to raise.
