The Great Trump Card - Chapter 95
Chapter 95 Captain Wang’s Recruitment
During the weekends, Lin Huai gathered and brought all of his men—Red Canes and White Paper Fan—over to a restaurant. He passed the message from Thunder God, Tang Shi. At first everyone was in a good mood and joking around but upon hearing what Lin Huai said, their expressions turned gloomy; only Dao Zi was being indifferent. Everyone glanced at each other and the mood was rather down. After all, nobody wanted to get on Tang Shi’s bad side.
If the risk of going against Zhou Minghu was getting beaten up or being made cripple, then going against Tang Shi meant that you were risking your life, since he was a real mafia boss.
Seeing the current situation, Lin Huai already understood what was in everybody’s minds. He couldn’t really blame them for having such thoughts, since nobody would want to go against a Mafia Boss. He had thousands of henchmen that were willing to sacrifice their lives and fight for him. Not only that, Tang Shi had a couple of Red Canes that were much stronger than Li Kandao too. The situation was unlike those petty arguments and small fights within the college.
Seeing how everyone remained silent, Dao Zi spoke up first. He said in his typical icy cold voice, “I don’t really care. All I know is I will stab whoever Brother Huai tells me to.”
The rest felt ashamed after hearing what Dao Zi said. Just as they were about to speak up, Lin Huai gave a bitter smile and waved his hand. He said, “There’s no need to constantly be thinking about stabbing people. Don’t worry about that. When I led you all to go up against Zhou Minghu, have you ever seen me take a fight that I had no confidence in?”
Everyone felt a sense of relief upon hearing what Lin Huai said. They were actually afraid that Lin Huai might choose to go against Thunder God head-on because things were going too smoothly his way recently.
Pu Chengji smiled and said, “Brother Huai, since the day I chose to follow you, I knew that you’re not only ruthless but also very intelligent. So Brother Huai, what’s your plan now? Are you going to succumb to Thunder God?”
Lin Huai grinned and replied, “There is no need for me to go up against him head-on as we would have zero chance of winning anyway. Although I am very capable of fighting, if they had over a thousand people rushing at me, I would not be able to go up against them alone. Not only that, I am sure they have guns and we don’t even know how many they have. If it was me alone, it would be an easier decision but I cannot drag my fellow brothers into this. Pu Chengji, you are my White Paper Fan, why don’t you come up with an idea?”
As a White Paper Fan, the main job was to come up with strategic ideas and how to implement them. Pu Chengji thought for a moment and replied, “Well… Brother Huai, like you said, I think we cannot fight with him head-on. Otherwise, not only that some of our people might fall, even the current excellent situation of the college that we spent so much time building might go back to how it used to be. We mustn’t allow Thunder God to get an excuse to lay a hand on us, because he will definitely start to move in on us if he was given the chance to do so.”
Lin Huai asked, “So what do you think we should do?”
“By the looks of it, there are only two ways out. There are three main forces in the Northern District. Either we succumb to Thunder God, or we will have to seek help and pledge loyalty to either one of the other two forces. Brother Huai, it’s said that Northern District has a certain law—I heard about this news recently from someone from the sports major who used to follow Zhou Minghu. This law states that Yulan College is a unique existence as it is the place where the three forces would scout people they are interested in. However, the students have a choice in which forces they wish to join. None of the forces can force the person with good potential that’s identified by the three forces to join them using brute force; they can only scout them.”
Lin Huai’s eyes lit up. “Oh? I had no idea there’s such a rule.”
Pu Chengji smiled and said, “Many people say that Yulan College is a breeding ground for the Northern District gangsters. The only reason that the Northern District is still a force to be reckoned with—despite the disunited forces—is because Yulan College constantly generates new students that would join gangs. Just think about it. The three big forces would identify people with immense potential and try to scout them into their group, and if they start to realize that they could not get them to join, then they will use force to either get or destroy them. They might think that ‘since I can’t get him, then might as well nobody gets him’ and kills a potential new member. Wouldn’t the overall strength of the Northern District eventually become weaker and weaker?”
“That makes sense.” Lin Huai nodded.
“Thus, they decided to set up this rule whereby any identified potential could be roped in, persuaded or even threatened but under no circumstances could they use brute force to harm their lives. Unless that person left or graduated from Yulan College.”
Lin Huai smiled and said, “Oh, so that’s how it is. Even though I turned down his offer that day, someone of his status still had to let me leave as he had to abide by the rule.”
Pu Chengji said, “Yes, he needs to abide by the rule. Of course, there is another rule in the agreement as well. Even if you agree to join any of the three forces, you could not participate in any of their fights until you graduate. If they found out that you helped your boss to fight against any other groups, the agreement will be void. The other two forces can then freely lay hands on you.”
Lin Huai nodded and said, “I get it now. Back then Zhou Minghu agreed to join Thunder God’s group but he did not participate in any of the fights among the three forces because he was yet to graduate. Thus, the other two forces had no excuse to eliminate and kill him off despite him being a potential threat in the future.”
“Exactly. Unless Zhou Minghu graduated from the college, because by then, he would no longer be considered a student but rather an actual adult in the society.” Pu Chengji said, “Brother Huai, now you are an even stronger potential candidate as compared to Zhou Minghu. The three forces have definitely acknowledged this fact, and thus nobody dares to lay a hand on you.”
Lin Huai said, “However, they can lay hands on my people.”
Pu Chengji sighed and continued, “Technically, if you choose to not join forces, they could look for an excuse to lay hands on the people around you. However, once you join any one of them, those who are close to you will be receiving the same protection as you.”
Lin Huai smiled and said, “So this is how it goes. I’m guessing Thunder God must be rather anxious now. Because if I were to turn down his offer and join one of the other two forces, he has no choice but to accept and he can’t even complain about it.”
Pu Chengji eagerly expressed his views. “Strictly speaking, if you had to join any of the forces, I’d rather you join Thunder Gods’. After all, he has the most powerful forces and by the looks of it, I think that eventually the other two will be taken over by him. In general, my advice is that either you join Thunder God or any one of the other two forces. Only then would his threat to you be negated.”
Lin Huai grinned and replied, “I understand. Everyone dig in first. No need to think too much about it… I still have someone to discuss this matter with.”
Everyone looked over at Lin Huai, who chuckled and took out his phone. He then dialed a number and said with a smile. “Captain Wang, are you free now? Mind having a meal together? It will be on me. Yes, yes, you can come over now, I am at …”
Lin Huai provided the address of his current location and then hung up. Lin Huai saw that everyone was looking at him in curiosity so he smiled and said, “That was Wang Zhili, the Captain of the Public Security Bureau Police Brigade.”
“Damn! You even have connections with the captain!” Wu Mengjie gave Lin Huai a thumbs up and gasped in admiration. “Brother Huai, you are so amazing.”
Lin Huai smiled and said, “I am just inviting him over to give my greetings. When he drops by later, we can build our relationship with him. I feel that we could utilize Captain Wang because who knows, he might be able to propose and suggest something useful.”
After some time, Captain Wang arrived. He pushed the door and saw a large number of people. With a serious and rigid look on his face, he directly walked over toward Lin Huai and took a seat next to him. He looked at the table filled with dishes and said, “Lin Huai, I can tell that you are living quite the life.”
Lin Huai smiled and said, “Captain Wang, have some food. What alcohol do you want? Beer or liquor?”
“It’s okay, I drove here. I will get going after grabbing something to eat.”
Lin Huai smiled and said, “Oh, alright. Then shall we talk over our meal?”
“Sure.”
After the meal, Captain Wang and Lin Huai got a lot closer to each other. The rest of Lin Huai’s group barely had the opportunity to join in their conversation. After all, it was the Captain of the Public Security Bureau and they were just ordinary students. It was inevitable that they were a little nervous.
Once everyone finished eating, Captain Wang said, “Where are you going? I can drop you off.”
“Sure, thank you for the offer. The rest of you can leave and go anywhere you want.” Lin Huai smiled and took up Captain Wang’s offer. He followed Captain Wang out of the hotel and took a seat into his private vehicle. The vehicle was a sedan car that cost around a hundred thousand. Once Lin Huai got in, he took out his cigarettes.
Captain Wang who was seated in the driver’s seat took a look at Lin Huai next to him. He smiled and said, “I can see that you are getting comfortable.”
“We are all brothers, aren’t we? So why the need for formalities? Am I right, Captain Wang?”
Captain Wang smiled and said, “Tell me about it. Why did you want to meet me? I am guessing you must have something to talk about. If you do, be straightforward about it. There is no need to beat around the bush. Let me guess, it must be related to the three big gangster forces, right?”
“Haha, Captain Wang, you’re really smart and intelligent. Alright then, I will talk to you about the problems I am facing right now.” Lin Huai took a few minutes to explain how he got threatened by Thunder God. He then glanced at Captain Wang and asked, “Captain Wang, what do you think I should do?”
Captain Wang could not help but laugh. “Thunder God tried to rope you in this soon? Well, I guess that’s normal since he is smart after all. You’re asking me what you should do? Just accept it, as this is a good thing! Do you know how long it took for Zhou Minghu to catch Thunder God’s attention despite being a Big Boss in Yulan College? Zhou Minghu had always wanted to get into the Thunder Gang. Now that the Big Boss of Thunder Gang approached you, why are you still waiting and not accepting his offer right away?”
Lin Huai said seriously, “To be honest, I have no intention of getting mixed up with gangsters. It’s not only the Thunder Gang. I have no interest toward the other as well.”
“Then why did you choose to become a Big Boss?”
“Captain Wang, how could you possibly not know the reason why I became Big Boss?”
“Is it really just to bring peace to Yulan College?” Captain Wang stared at Lin Huai and wanted to see through his actual intentions. Then he stretched out his arm and took the cigarette offered by Lin Huai. He smoked the lighted cigarette before solemnly saying, “You really are the most unique person I have ever met. By right I should not be getting myself mixed up into such matters because Thunder God is not somebody I want to offend. However, since you are someone with such a personality, then I would suggest you actually join the Thunder Gang.”
“Why?” Lin Huai asked.
Captain Wang looked at Lin Huai and said with a serious look, “So you can do me a favor!”
