Chapter 96 Shudder for Tang Shi

Lin Huai asked in shock, “Help you do a favor? What do you mean by that?”

All of a sudden, a thought crossed Lin Huai’s mind. However, since he was unsure about it, he did not bring it up right away. Some things could not be brought up just like that as it was important to first figure out what the other person meant. After all, he had not planned to have a falling out with Thunder God just yet. Thunder God had at least a thousand followers and all of them were adults. Although Lin Huai had quite a number of students as his henchmen, only a few of them could actually be of use to him. If faced with the gangsters out there, other than the few sports majors that could barely hold their weight, the rest of the students would be useless. Even the sports majors were considered weak and would collapse easily in a fight against actual gangsters out in the real world.

Captain Wang looked at Lin Huai and flashed him a faint smile. He said, “I believe you have managed to piece the puzzles together. After all, you are such an intelligent person so you should roughly know what I mean.”

Lin Huai still acted clueless and asked, “Captain Wang, what do you mean by that?”

With a serious voice, Captain Wang said, “I wish to lay a hand on the three big gangster forces. Based on what I know, Thunder God, Tang Shi, has always been involved in the drug business. Thus, I want you to go in as an undercover and help me eradicate them from the inside.”

Lin Huai frowned and said, “Sounds very dangerous.”

Captain Wang smiled and said, “Actually you don’t have much choice either. Let me analyze this for you. Either you join Tang Shi or the other two forces. However, it would still be impossible for you to stay out of this mess, unless you choose to move out of this town and leave Northern District. If not, why not join the strongest gang? Let me tell you this, Tang Shi has long had the ambition to take over the two forces. It’s just that he is not absolutely certain he can do it yet. If you join any one of the other two forces and become his enemy, things won’t end well for you.”

Lin Huai smiled and said, “If I chose to take your advice and be your undercover, things won’t end up well for me either.”

“Even if you were to become my undercover agent, I will not force you to do anything. After all, I do not wish for Tang Shi to know about our connections. To be honest, Tang Shi is a psychopath. If he knew that I sent someone in to go against him, I will also be in danger.”

Out of curiosity, Lin Huai asked, “Then why do you still want to do this?”

Captain Wang smiled and said, “I want to be promoted. The world will never be eradicated of dark forces. Even if Tang Shi was eliminated from this world, a second Tang Shi will appear again. It’s just like how you eradicated Zhou Minghu, but then Tang Shi appeared right after. The concept of how it works is the same. However, if I could receive great achievements under my name, then I would be able to get a promotion. So why not?”

So it turns out Captain Wang has the intention of being promoted, no wonder he chose to take such risks. Lin Huai thought about it over and over again. This matter was rather risky for Captain Wang as well. If Lin Huai ratted him out and exposed this secret, Captain Wang would be in a lot of trouble. Why did he choose me? Why did he believe in me?

Lin Huai suddenly thought of another possibility. Maybe Captain Wang had already planted informants around Tang Shi, but Lin Huai was not informed who that person was. That person might even be a big shot in the gang. But of course, the biggest possibility would be that they were just Tang Shi’s underling. After all, Captain Wang had limited resources as he would not be able to match the offer of what a big shot would want. Thus, it was actually rather difficult for him to bribe a big shot within the gang. Not only that, if he could actually bribe someone important, there was no need for him to ask a student like Lin Huai for a favor.

Lin Huai looked at Captain Wang and asked, “You actually already knew that I was threatened by Tang Shi right? You have someone on the inside?”

The expression on Captain Wang’s face changed. He smiled wryly and said, “Even such things could not go unnoticed under your eyes. That’s right, I do have an informer on the inside. However, that person’s status is too low and he’s just an ordinary member of the gang. He could not get close to the inner circle so I have no choice but to choose you. Before today, I had heard of the fact that Tang Shi threatened you and that you had turned him down. I was contemplating if I should look for you when you came looking for me first. Right there and then, I knew that you were the right fit for the job.”

Captain Wang continued, “However, I would not forcefully request that you defeat Tang Shi. I would not ask you to be involved in anything too dangerous as I myself would not partake in it. No matter how important getting a promotion is, our life is always the top priority. So even if you manage to only help me get a few small achievements here and there, I could accumulate them and take a step further in my career. As for the benefits I am able to provide, you can come to me for help anytime. Wouldn’t this relationship between us be much better than the relationship you have with the son of the Director of the Public Security Bureau?”

Captain Wang had obviously heard about the fact that Lin Huai and Wan Zitao were not close friends at all.

Lin Huai also knew that Wan Zitao could only be used once and that was about it. Not only that, Wan Zitao was used because of his hatred toward Xuan Yuzhai. If he needed help in the future with gang related matters, Wan Zitao would definitely not help him out. Thus, he needed his own backup and support.

Furthermore, it seemed like Lin Huai did not have much choice at hand either. At the very least, he had the same goals as Captain Wang. Captain Wang wanted a promotion whereas he wanted to eradicate the gangster forces. If that was the case, there would be no problem for them to cooperate and work together.

Lin Huai stretched out his hand and said, “Alright, I will work with you.”

Captain Wang smiled and shook Lin Huai’s hand as he said, “I believe that I did not make a mistake of choosing the wrong person. After all, I have heard about everything you did at Yulan College. Putting aside your strong capabilities that allow you to protect yourself, you are also very different from other typical gangsters. You have a very strong sense of justice.”

Lin Huai smiled and said, “You’re complimenting me?”

Just as Captain Wang was about to reply, he suddenly said in a solemn voice, “Keep your head down.”

Lin Huai was stunned for a moment before quickly letting down his seat. His whole body lay on the seat and he casually took a newspaper next to him to cover his face.

Soon after that, Lin Huai heard the sound of someone knocking on the car window. Captain Wang rolled down the window and said with a big smile on his face, “Oh my, isn’t this Big Boss Thunder? To what do I owe the pleasure of bumping into you on the streets.”

Lin Huai’s heartbeat rose and skyrocketed. He knew that if Thunder God realized he was with the police, their plan would be ruined. Not only that, Thunder God might suspect that he was an informant working with the police. After all, suspicion was dangerous as anyone paranoid enough could turn their suspicion into the truth despite it not being the case.

Thunder God said in his usual domineering and loud voice, “Captain Wang, I did not expect to bump into you here as well. Shall we go have a drink together?”

Captain Wang smiled and said, “Not today. I am driving so it’s not convenient for me to drink. And I already had my meal.”

Thunder God replied, “Oh. Captain Wang, I think some of my followers got into trouble at the ‘I Love Bar’ a few days ago. They stabbed somebody. I believe they should be released soon.”

Captain Wang said, “But the victim was wounded quite badly.”

“Haha, isn’t it just a compensation issue? The person is not dead, so it’s not really a big deal. If I cannot even protect these followers of mine then how could I be their big boss and lead them? Isn’t that right, Captain Wang?”

Lin Huai did not expect Thunder God to be so arrogant. It was clear that he had control of the whole Northern District to the point where even the Captain of the Public Security Bureau meant nothing to him.

Captain Wang remained silent for a while before giving an apologetic smile and said, “As long as Big Boss Thunder can settle this issue with the family of the wounded, then it wouldn’t be much of a problem from my side.”

“Haha, Captain Wang is a really good friend. I have some high-class tea leaves with me and I will order someone to send them over to you tomorrow.”

“You’re too kind. There is no need for that. When it comes to Big Boss Thunder’s matters I would definitely keep a close eye. Since this is part of my job and responsibility after all.”

Thunder God replied with satisfaction. All of a sudden he went silent and Lin Huai could feel that Captain Wang was trembling. However, it was not that obvious and it was just a minor movement. But it still caught Lin Huai’s eyes.

Everything fell silent and after a short while, Thunder God said, “I saw that there was someone else in your car just now?”

“Oh? He is a relative of mine that is visiting from out of town.”

Thunder God seemed to heave a sigh of relief and said, “That’s fine if he’s your family. That way, it would avoid bringing you any trouble due to him overhearing our conversations of me sending you the tea leaves. I was just thinking, if he was your colleague from the bureau that overheard something he should not have, I am afraid he would no longer appear in Tongcheng City.”

Such arrogance. Tang Shi, the Thunder God was really arrogant.

Captain Wang seemed to be wiping off cold sweat on his face. He gave an apologetic smile and said, “Big Boss Thunder, you must be joking. Even if the person seated in my car was a colleague of mine, he would definitely be one of my guys. Since he is my relative, you don’t have to worry.”

“Okay, it’s good that he’s your relative. Alright, since you are not willing to accompany me, I will make a move and have my meal.”

“Haha, how would I dare not accompany you? It’s just that I have already taken my meal so I cannot join you. See you again, Big Boss Thunder. I won’t be seeing you off then.”

Lin Huai listened to how Captain Wang was being so respectful toward Thunder God, Tang Shi. A few seconds after the car window was rolled up, Captain Wang heaved a sigh of relief and said, “Alright, they have gone into the restaurant.”

Lin Huai sat back up and looked at Captain Wang who was sweating all over. Out of curiosity, Lin Huai asked, “Was he that scary? Captain Wang, you are the Captain of the Public Security Bureau. Even though you are not as high-ranked as the Director, your rank is still considered high. Do you have to be so afraid of a gangs’ big boss?”

“You have no clue. You don’t understand him… You have no idea how scary Thunder God is,” Captain Wang heaved a long sigh of relief again and said. “Let me send you back first. Show me the way to wherever you are going.”

Captain Wang wanted to stick his car key into the ignition chamber so he could start the car. However, he failed after a few tries as his hands were still trembling uncontrollably. Lin Huai, who was watching from the side, started to feel his heart sink. It was only till now that he realized he was going to face an opponent that was extremely scary. Tang Shi was someone that could say a word and casually send someone to commit suicide on the highway. He could also just randomly strike up a conversation and just that alone was enough to scare the Captain of the Public Security Bureau to the point that his arms were shaking out of fear.

I wonder what kind of person this Thunder God is!
