Chapter 36: What Failure Looks Like

What were they even thinking? They had already made the decision to stop acting rashly, but still chose to enter. They must be mad to enter, knowing that Ghroth lurked here.
With this thought, Yu Yi and Huahua climbed deftly up the clock tower to the second floor window and slipped into the clock tower.
“KP, Inspect.”
It was Huahua’s turn to inspect this time. Now, they were inside. According to Yu Yi’s description, since he saw Ghroth from the outside and couldn’t see the sky from the inside, a “Great Success” wouldn’t be an issue.

Great, her Inspection passed again. COC games were often like this. Sometimes one would fail when success seemed easy, while sometimes one would succeed when it was obviously impossible.
“It’s been a long while since someone last came here. The ground is covered with thick dust too. Apart from that, there’s nothing here.”
Huahua described the information acquired. Looking around, there was indeed dust everywhere and no traces of footprints. The thickness of the dust was quite consistent too. There were equal amounts of dust on both sides of the room. This meant it had really been a while since someone was here.
“Let’s still try to be careful. I’ve come to learn something. The KP of this game is no ordinary KP. He doesn’t usually show his hands, but once he does, we’ll die.”
After a trifecta of checks: Inspiration, Willpower and SC, Yu Yi had once again proved his good luck. If an unlucky person did this, he would’ve died several times over.
Yu Yi followed Huahua up the stairs. After a few continuous flights of stairs, they set foot at the top of the clock tower. However, all they could see was a panoramic view of the town.
Yu Yi suddenly felt that the reason for Pentalight Star and Ghroth’s appearance was all because of the overstep. They had pistols, rifles, Tai Sword, and explosives, which probably caused the damage-immune Pentalight Star and the invincible Ghroth to appear. If they brought nothing, they would probably be against fishmen or Families. Their most difficult enemies would be mere black lambs. Even that was a stretch.
“Seems like we’ll get nothing from this.”
After a thorough check, not even sparing the huge bell, they ended up with empty hands. Even when they took out the engraving, they elicited no responses. That would mean that there really was nothing there. So, why did I even try to Inspect this place! At a cost of 9 points of sanity value! According to the rules, if I lost 1 more point, I would be permanently insane!
The original rules of the game decreed that a one-time loss of more than 5 points of sanity value would cause the player to go into a temporary state of insanity, while a loss of 10 points would cause long-term insanity. However, the rules for this game were more difficult. If a player lost 5 points of sanity value within one day, he would become temporarily insane, while a loss of 10 points within one day would cause long-term insanity. This had a multiplier effect on the difficulty. They even had to be careful when using magic, as magic would exhaust sanity values. However, it wasn’t too bad for Yu Yi as he hadn’t even learnt any magic yet. However, Lizi already knew two magical moves.
Yu Yi sat on the top of the clock tower for a short rest. Looking at the sunset, he sighed.
“The name of the instance mission was ‘Head for the Abyss’, but till now, we only have limited information. We don’t even know what an abyss is. Although we know the background of the plot, what is an abyss even? And where is it? Who is the enemy? We have no idea.”
Although the game had started well, they had way too little information. Up till now, the only progress was that the foreign missionary worshipped Yogg Sotos and had been expelled in the first place. Everything about the missionary was destroyed too, including the watchtowers and stadiums surrounding the place. This was obviously the handiwork of their opponent, which were the local mafias and the local missionaries.
That priest had to know something. However, given the fact that the game had opened with his death along with their failed inspection at the old church, the only information they knew was about the enemy. They didn’t know who their enemy was. However, they had found a mythical creature–the Pentalight Star from the ruins of the missionary church. They could start with that. Also, they were wondering why the Star Color stopped its attack, even though it looked ready to strike.
Additionally, they knew that the instance mission could not fail at all costs. Ghroth had appeared here. Also, the shitty KP said that if the instance mission failed, it would transform into reality. Then, Italy in the real world would suddenly see the appearance of a small town named Butaya along with the destructive singer Ghroth. The high-difficulty Ghroth had appeared at the start of the game. How was this even playable?
Although Naya would like to destroy mankind, Naya preferred to allow humans to walk towards destruction themselves. However, Ghroth was different. The moment she sang, the entire world would instantly go insane.
“Let’s go.”
There was no longer any reason to stay here. They had searched through the clock tower, so there wasn’t much point in wasting their time here.
The last clue was the mafia leader’s phone number. Yu Yi might just hand the cross to him. He was the last clue, so Yu Yi didn’t mind exchanging the cross for his trust. The cross had to be an item with special powers. If he could keep it and complete the mission, it would be a nice addition to his collection of items. However, given the current circumstances, he would rather trade it for the completion of the mission.
The two of them approached the stairs and descended. However, as time passed, they realised that the staircase was endless. This was a huge issue! A huge one!
“Run!!!”
They sprinted downwards. However, they seemed to be infinitesimally far from the dark bottom. As they ran, the stairs seemed to extend into the darkness.
Without hesitation, Yu Yi pulled out his pistol, loaded it, and clicked off the safety. He aimed at the windows at the side and pulled the trigger.
A few bullets broke through the glass. Yu Yi leapt at one of the broken windows, and managed to get through. Instinctively, he grabbed the edge of the window. Just as he had suspected, Yu Yi was hanging at the highest window of the building. If he had leapt out directly, he wouldn’t have been able to escape the fate of falling to his death.
It was good that the clock tower was built with raw stone, which gave it an uneven surface. The rocks that jutted out were useful as stepping stones.
Huahua copied Yu Yi’s actions as she leapt out the window. However, her body stopped when she was halfway out of the window. It was as though something grabbed her lower body and attempted to pull her in.
Throwing away the M1911 in his hands, Yu Yi reached out and grabbed Huahua. After a moment of impasse, the strange force reached out from seemingly nowhere and pulled Yu Yi into the clock tower.
[Power resistance… Success!]
Yu Yi immediately felt the grip loosen. He took the chance and unsheathed the Tai Sword, slashing at the darkness behind Huahua. Immediately, a pungent liquid sprayed on Yu Yi’s face as Huahua managed to escape. Without hesitation, she leapt out of the window and grabbed at the fencing below. Nimbly, she used the uneven surface to shimmy herself onto the ground.
Meanwhile, YU Yi was grabbed by the strange thing and pulled into the clock tower. Then, the window sealed itself.
[You have received a psychological attack and are in a coma… r1d6 = 1, you will wake up one day later.]
Then, Yu Yi’s vision became dark.
