The Life of Maria Lewellin - Chapter 40
[Rohin, year 26, month xx, day xx,
Hello, it’s me again. As soon as I woke up in the morning, I was called to the palace.
I was surprised when I met the empress in person because she’s really different from what I had expected. Her personality seemed calm, but that actually scared me more.
Roselia…., ugh. Just thinking about her makes my cheek hurt again. I should’ve pinched her without anyone knowing.
I also went to the square with Ains in the afternoon. Thanks to him, I found a good restaurant. The meat that Ains recommended to me was truly delicious. Next time I go to the square, I’ll definitely eat there again.
Then I went to see a fortune teller. I’m getting depressed again when I tried to recall it. I can’t believe the fortune-teller didn’t see anything.
It’s like I’ve been told; “Close your eyes. That’s your future.”
I can’t believe I’m actually going through this.
Everything will be fine, right….? I hope so.
-Maria’s Diary on a day with many happenings-
“Oh, my God!”
A loud voice came out of the maid’s mouth. The maid standing by the door opened the door quickly as I went into the drawing-room and put a pile of books on the table.
Chloe who followed after me also put two books on the table. A very worried gaze turned to me.
“Doesn’t your arm hurt?”
“I’m fine. “
I used to carry around heavy trays back when I still worked at the restaurant. Of course, carrying books this many is just a piece of cake to me.
“Can you get me some cold water?”
“Yes, Miss Maria. “
I soon began to rummage through the books on the table.
[Essential Herbs to Learn with Pictures]
Here it is!
When I found the book I was most interested in, I sat down on a chair and began to read one by one.
The big storm called the [Ball] has passed safely, so I decided to learn something new in my free time.
And that’s studying herbal medicine.
I can tell the sickness of the animals through conversation, but the problem was what to do after that.
If I open an animal hospital later, I should not only find out the symptoms but also the treatment. Since there are no professional examination tools and surgical tools, it can only be treated with medicine, which required studying herbs.
Of course, I could also hire a pharmacist, but I also thought it would be reliable to have the basic knowledge.
The book I chose had a much better quality than I thought. I carefully looked at the pictures, read the names, the descriptions, and the uses of each herb, but after a while, Linda came inside with a knock.
I was still reading a book, but I looked up at Linda with my head up at the voice that followed.
“A letter has arrived Miss Maria. “
“A letter? For me? “
“Yes. “
Linda had an invitation-like envelope in her hand. I reached out towards her to get the letter as I wondered. Who on earth sent this to me?
“Ugh. “
The moment I flipped the envelope, I frowned unknowingly. The name ‘Roselia Winston’ was written in neat cursive on the lower right corner.
Waiting time is so boring. All I can do was drink a cup of tea, look at the watch, then drink another cup of tea.
But Roselia did not show up. The maid said it was because something urgent suddenly came up, but that was obviously a lie.
She should have sent a letter next time if you had an emergency. Does she think everyone has time to spare?
I grumbled inwardly and looked over the window.
In the letter sent by Roselia, it said, “My dog seems to be sick, so please come and take care of it.”
To be honest, I didn’t like it. I hate it very much because it was my first time in my life that I got hit on my face in full swing.
That’s why I initially planned to ignore it, but as time went by, the contents of the letter kept hovering in my mind.
The letter contained relatively detailed symptoms. This unintentionally complicated my mind.
The thought that it might be a trap and the thought that something bad might’ve really happened to a dog caused a fierce fight in my head, and in the end, with a long sigh, I asked Linda to get ready to go out.
Plus, it might be annoying if I ignored her. I can just ask the dog if it’s really sick in case she’s lying to me.
So I came to the Winston mansion even though I hate it so much, but Roselia’s guest reception was terrible.
I’ve been sitting alone in the drawing-room for 30 minutes now.
As soon as I couldn’t stand it anymore and be about to get up, the door of the drawing-room finally opened and Roselia came in.
She was wearing a gorgeous purple dress with her hair, neatly twisted. She was certainly beautiful even in the eyes of another woman. How nice would it be if she has a good personality.
“Hello,”
I greeted first but Roselia only slightly nodded in reply.
Ugh, I hate this girl.
The corners of my mouth trembled. I had waited for 30 minutes, but I couldn’t find any signs of regret in her face.
I wanted to be angry, but I swallowed up my anger because of the thing I saw the maid was carrying.
There was a little dog in the maid’s arms. It certainly didn’t look good. The same was true even after the dog was placed on the sofa.
I checked his eyes, nose, and mouth as soon as I got close. When I opened his mouth slightly, it smelled sour.
He must have vomited.
I stretch out my bent back and look at Roselia.
“Since when did this happen?”
Roselia’s eyes turned back. The maid standing with her hands together politely replied.
“The dog has been like this since the night before yesterday. He threw up a few times, and then he got sick all night, and after that, he didn’t eat even if I brought him a meal.”
Hmm…
“What about his stool? Did he had diarrhea?”
“Yes.”
Then he must’ve eaten something wrong. What did he eat?
I turned to the dog again.
At this time, I spoke with a soft voice, thinking it was fortunate that I could really communicate with animals.
[Hi.]
I could see the ears moving. I sat crouching at the dog’s eye level.
[I’m worried about you because you’re sick. Can you tell me what you ate?]
[I had chicken and bread.]
[Chicken and bread?]
I don’t see anything wrong with that. It’s food that dogs like.
[How did it taste when you ate it? Did it smell weird? Is it hard?]
[Yes, it smelled weird, but I was hungry so I just ate it.]
It smelled weird…Did you eat something bad? No way.
I continued to talk over and over again, trying to calm my rising anxiety.
[Only the food you ate then smelled bad?]
[No, it’s been like that for days. I didn’t want to eat it because it was weird, but I had to because I was hungry.]
(t/n: oh nooo. Poor dog. That dang bish!!!! also pls read this on novelupdates !!!!)
[They’ve been continuously…]
Doing that?
I couldn’t bear to say the last word.
I bit my lips hard. I slowly rose with my fists rolled up.
Roselia looked at me in surprise and soon shouted at me.
“Why are you looking at me like that?!”
“Did you give him spoiled food in purpose?”
“What? “
“I’m asking you if you purposely gave the dog spoiled food.”
“What are you talking about? There’s no reason for that!”
Roselia flew into a rage. But I could hardly get my suspicions out of the way. Because I saw her face twisted in embarrassment for a moment clearly with my own eyes.
Are you crazy?!
I barely swallowed a voice that was up to my throat.
It was clear but there was no evidence. No, I heard it directly from the dog, so I’m sure that’s evidence, but even if I tell that to Roselia, there’s no way she would believe it.
She’ll be more like, ‘Where are you bluffing?’
“Are you staring at me?”
Yeah, you punk!
Looking at her ridiculous face makes me want to start cursing so I turned my head.
I didn’t even have to ask why she did such a heinous thing. She knows that I’m staying in the Imperial Palace after treating Glick, so she must have wanted to check if it was true.
But it’s too much to purposely feed a dog bad food because of that.
The dog was still lying limp. I managed to calm myself down with a long deep breath, I asked the dog again.
[Don’t you remember eating anything else?]
[No, I don’t think so.]
It was a relief. It would’ve been really dangerous if you’d given her something she couldn’t eat.
[Is she your owner? Does she take care of you?]
[No, Helena is my owner.]
It was a name I had heard at a social gathering. Clearly… Roselia’s sister’s name was Helena.
Waah, so you did this to your sister’s dog? You’re a terrible person.
[Is Helena nice to you?]
[Yeah. Helena said no, but she forced to take me from her.]
[ ….yes. Thanks for telling me. I’ll make you feel better in a minute.]
Roselia was looking at me with her arms crossed. I repeatedly held back my anger and said one by one.
“Don’t feed your dog bad food.”
She looks so surprised. I must have hit the right spot.
“W-What are you talking about? W-What do you mean I’m feeding it bad food? Did you look at it properly?”
“Yes, I looked very carefully. Vomiting and diarrhea are 100% caused by being sick in the stomach. It seems that your house’s situation is not as good as it seems since you’re giving your pet spoiled food.”
“You shameless…!”
I could see anger flare in her face, but I wasn’t scared at all. Rather, I feel like if she slapped me on the cheek like the last time, I would also want to hit her coolly.
“Don’t treat me like a dumb dog. Is this child really raised by Lady Winston? I heard that Lady Helena likes dogs.”
“Why does that matter now!”
“Looking at you changing the subject, it seems that the one raising this dog is really Lady Helena.”
I looked pitifully at the maid, who was still standing there and spoke to her.
“Feed the dog medicine three times a day when it had a stomachache. Please feed it only a bowl of soup for the time being.”
“Yes, I understand. “
In addition to that, I also gave some precautions, but I’m still very anxious. It would be better if I talk to the original owner to take good care of , but the problem is Roselia.
She might do bigger harm to this dog to frame me.
The dog was still drooping without energy. If I left like this, I felt like I’ll be having nightmares, so I sighed and spoke.
“Is Miss Helena home now?”
“Yes, she is. “
“Then can you ask her if it’s okay for me to keep the dog until he gets all better?”
I know I’m being too nosy but I couldn’t help it. She won’t be able to give any excuse if I send the dog back in good health.
After a while, the maid came back and told the news.
“The Lady said that you can do that. “
“That’s great. I think he’ll get better in three days…but please tell her that I’ll bring him to the mansion once he’s fully recovered. Please tell her not to worry.”
I stretched out my arms and held the dog in my arms. Just before I left the reception room, I looked straight into Roselia’s eyes and gave sincere advice.
“If you’re suspicious of my abilities, please come to the palace next time. I’ll personally introduce Glick to you. “
I said I wanted some Maria x animals interaction but this chapter just made my blood boil because of Roselia. How can you do that to a poor dog?! I can’t wait for her karma.
Maria looks so cool here though. I like how she handles it and those last words! Ahhh so satisfying!
