The Luckiest Man - Chapter 44
Chapter 44: “Police, Please Help!”
Bai Tao had been a thief for the previous five to six years.
Since he’d been a child, Bai Tao had been extremely lazy and habitually engaged in dishonest work. Then, someone had taught him the ropes of the criminal world and had guided him in mastering the craft. By learning the different ways of stealing, Bai Tao had fallen in love with that line of work.
After all, it felt pleasant and refreshing to gain ownership of material goods without working for it—he did not have to do much, he could get his hands on different items just by spending time loitering in the market. How cool was that? He had always told his hooligan friends that “it’s impossible to work, it’s really impossible to work in this life, I can only live like this.”
Everything could have been smooth sailing for Bai Tao. He had excellent skills and was rarely caught: his agility and athletic skills allowed him to escape when he was caught red-handed.
Who would have known, however, that that day he would be so unlucky. Not only had he been caught red-handed, he was also being chased by a large crowd!
In the past, Bao Tai had been able to easily outrun those who were pursuing him. That day, though, it was not so easy. His limits were being tested.
Bao Tai had run 500 meters in less than one and a half minutes! That was as fast as an athlete. With the mall’s music playing in the background, Bai Tao believed it to be the pinnacle of his career! A hundred people were chasing him!
“Ahhhhh!” He was shaking in fear. Following right behind him was someone who could throw fireballs—an Awakener! Although the fireball could not fly very far, it was still incredibly scary.
He felt that, if caught, he could have been beaten to death.
Even if he was dead tired, he could not stop running.
Oh? In front, there was—there was a police station! He had finally found the safest place!
At that moment, tears started running down Bai Tao’s cheeks. He could finally put his childhood knowledge to great use: when in danger, approach the police!
“Ahhhhh!”
Howling, Bai Tao rushed through the gates of the police station and immediately kneeled down. He skidded ten meters across the station’s floor and wrapped his arms around a policeman’s legs, crying out. “Police, please help me!”
The entire station fell silent.
What was that situation? Had that man been kicked out of a pyramid scheme?
“You are…” The policeman looked at the man in front of him in confusion, “What happened?”
Then, he saw a group of people rushing in. Among the group, there were two teenagers; one looked around eighteen or nineteen, the other looked about twenty-four or twenty-five years old. The policeman asked, “What is going on?”
Hong Xiaofu, who chased after Bai Tao, pointed to the wallet in Bai Tao’s hands, “Thief, look at the wallet in his hands.”
At that very moment, Bai Tao wanted to die.
He had been too focused on running, he had forgotten to get rid of the evidence!
“Oh,” The policeman was delighted, “So, this thief was too afraid to be caught by you guys and decided to seek help from us?”
The policeman looked at the thief, he could not help but ask, “What’s the matter? Why did you decide to seek help from the police?”
Bai Tao: “…”
How was he supposed to answer?
Since they had gone to the station, naturally the police would not be lenient. Bao Tai finally heaved a sigh of relief after the cops handcuffed him—he was finally safe! At that moment, it seemed like the safest place.
“Alright, thank you, everyone,” The thief seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. The policeman was in a good mood. He approached Hong Xiaofu and Li He to introduce himself. Extending his hand, he said, “My name is Wang, you can call me Policeman Wang. Could you two please provide me with a testimony?”
It was actually great that they had helped catch the thief, but Hong Xiaofu did not have time to spare to provide testimony. Hong Xiaofu said sheepishly, “That… Policeman Wang, my little sister is still at the mall, I have to rush back…”
“Oh, that…” Policeman Wang was caught in a tight spot.
Taking a testimony was part of the standard of the procedure, and he was merely following the guidelines given. But people had already rejected it—it was tough to ask them to stay.
At that moment, Li He took out a certificate from his pocket; it read Awakener’s Certificate. Li He said proudly , “Policeman Wang, this is what it is. I am a glorious Awakener, you can take a look at this…”
Policeman Wang was stunned the moment he saw the certificate and hurriedly examined the document.
Policeman Wang was well aware of the changes that society was undergoing. The Awakening was a hot topic, primarily because of the importance the country placed on it. Now that Li He had revealed himself, it was natural that Policeman Wang wanted to give him some face.
“Oh, I see. Nice to meet you.” Policeman Wang immediately stretched out his hand, “I did not expect you to be an Awakener. I thought that you were just a righteous citizen. That’s great, I can resolve this easily now. You can head back first. As for the testimony, I will get someone else to fill it in.” After all, there were eyewitnesses present, and Policeman Wang could quickly settle the matter.
When the two boys left the police station, a crowd rushed forward to greet them.
Everyone had witnessed Li He throwing fireballs while chasing Bai Tao, and they knew that he was an Awakener. They saw him in a different light as he was part of the rare Elemental Systems.
As they reached the main street, Hong Xiaofu asked curiously, “Brother He, your certificate… where did you get it from? Why don’t I have one?”
“This?” Li He took out the Awakener’s Certificate and waved it delightfully. He said, “Awakeners would receive it upon their university graduation. This allows us to find jobs easily as there are many privileges we can enjoy. Of course, there are also many regulations about what Awakeners can and cannot do. Things like harming the public, lending a helping hand to others when possible—after all, things have changed, and there are circumstances that the police might not be able to handle.”
Hong Xiaofu understood. It was equivalent to a National Appeasement Policy. To put it simply, by obtaining some privileges, the citizens would, in return, give the government a peace of mind. If an Awakener were to violate the regulations, other Awakeners would step in to resolve the issue—it was a useful and efficient policy that promoted social harmony.
Then, Li He continued, “Based on the information I received, students like you should be receiving it soon. It is said that there have been plans to conduct a preparatory class for students shortly to avoid incidents where Awakeners abuse their powers. After attending the lesson, you would be able to receive your certificate.”
Hearing that, Hong Xiaofu instantly rejoiced, “Really? That’s awesome!”
The two chatted as they walked. After the incident, their relationship had strengthened a little—it was mainly Li He who believed that they had become much closer. On the outside, Li He was chatting and laughing; internally, however, he was really terrified.
That thief must have been so miserable. He had been chased by more than a hundred people!
