The Luckiest Man - Chapter 52
Chapter 52: It Had Knelt!
Hong Xiaofu had an exceptional sleep. He even dreamed. In the dream, his body was crawling like a snake. Every movement he made pushed the disturbing emotions out of his body.
His skin was breathing and expelling all the negativity from his body while absorbing all the good things from the surroundings. It felt like being immersed in a bubble bath, every pore in his body opening up. It was extremely comfortable.
Then he woke up, relaxed…
The rest of the laborers were still fast asleep—especially Uncle Chen, whose snoring was as loud as thunder. What was strange was that, while he had been asleep, Hong Xiaofu had not heard a single sound.
As he stood up from the wooden bed, Hong Xiaofu walked outside to stretch his back. The weather was a little chilly, but it didn’t bother him. After a short exercise, Hong Xiaofu realized that the soreness he had felt in his arms and legs had disappeared. It was as if he had not moved a single brick that afternoon!
Hong Xiaofu: “…”
He kicked his legs and stretched his arms again. Then he wondered, surprised, “Is my true talent the ability to recover quickly?”
It didn’t seem like it.
For the past few days, Hong Xiaofu had been doing strenuous exercise to improve his physique. He had run until sweating, but he had felt good. What was going on?
He had no choice but to wreck his brain for answers, “Or my actual talent is to recover quickly after moving bricks?!”
As he thought of that, Hong Xiaofu felt depressed—was he supposed to move bricks all his life?
Thinking about it, Hong Xiaofu became immediately sad. As he pondered, however… wouldn’t moving thirty thousand bricks a day be, with this power, as easy as a game?
A piece of brick was four cents, thirty thousand bricks would be one thousand two hundred yuan, which would be thirty-one thousand yuan a month and forty thousand yuan a year!
At that moment, Hong Xiaofu felt enlightened. A bricklayer with an annual income of four hundred thousand yuan? Not only would he afford a bicycle—he wouldn’t even have to worry about his daily necessities!
Hong Xiaofu was instantly filled with energy. He had to continue moving the bricks!
He walked to the head of the car and continued working. Old Wu, the Awakener who could control bricks, also walked out. When he saw Hong Xiaofu working, he was shocked, “What the hell, little bother, why are you so hardworking? Can’t you take a good rest?!”
Huh? Oh, it was old Wu. Hong Xiaofu turned around and smiled, “I’m okay, I have rested. Now I feel really energized. It’s okay.”
“Oh…” Old Wu had heard of Hong Xiaofu’s ability. To be honest, he did not really believe it. As he smoked, he asked, “Oh right, little brother, you said that your ability is the power to make others kneel. Is that real? Why have I not heard of such ability?”
Hong Xiaofu was transporting fifteen bricks in his hands per trip. As he carried them, he replied, “I am not quite sure. My ability seems to be triggered by different events, I cannot control it. But it has worked a few times.”
It had worked a few times!
Old Wu immediately gasped, inhaling a little too much smoke and choking. He coughed, “Did it actually work? That’s great!” Then, he stepped back quietly, “Then, I shall return to work…”
As they were chatting, the rest of the laborers had awoken. Uncle Chen saw Hong Xiaofu working hard as he exited the room, and smiled, “Sure enough, young people are full of energy! Is your body okay?”
Hong Xiaofu smiled as he replied, “I’m okay, my body recovers very quickly. It’s as if I am made for bricklaying!”
Hearing Hong Xiaofu’s words, Uncle Chen froze momentarily, before shaking his head.
It was rare to see such an optimistic child.
Honestly speaking, since the recovery of supernatural influence and the emergence of Awakeners, Uncle Chen had met many of them. His neighbor was also an Awakener with enhanced memory. Before his Awakening, he used to stay in his room for three days without eating, trash everything he saw and mutter to himself all day about having a miserable future.
Before his Awakening, he was living like a bum. His Awakening had been a huge blessing from his ancestors, hadn’t it? Then, look at that young hunk over there. How optimistic was he?
Under Hong Xiaofu’s lead, all the laborers seemed to be more efficient than before. After all, humans are social creatures who thrive under good leadership. Chief contractor, Wang Zhen, was stunned. What the hell was up with that bunch of laborers? Why were they working so intensively?”
As the group worked, they chatted cheerfully, and nobody found it tiring at all.
After approximately an hour of work, a laborer suddenly yelled as he ran, “What the hell! That’s such a huge rat!”
Everyone dropped what they were doing and turned their heads. When they saw the rat, they froze to the spot!
Where the labourer was standing was a huge rat—its hair was black, with an oily shine. Its tail was at least two feet long, and the creature had a pair of cold, black eyes. Even as the laborers observed the rat from afar, they broke out in cold sweat.
“A mutated rat!” They screamed, as they escaped. At that time, they couldn’t care less about moving bricks. All they could think of was saving their own lives.
“Brothers, pick a weapon!” Uncle Chen had encountered such a mutated rat before. As he knew that the rat was extremely ferocious, he immediately ran toward one of the sheds—inside was a metal hoe.
A group of courageous laborers approached the rat; among them was old Wu. He had two blocks of bricks hovering above him. With his sunglasses perched on his nose and a cigarette between his lips, he still looked extremely cool. He was definitely the coolest man at the construction site.
Hong Xiaofu had no doubt that if the rat dared to escape, it would end up with a brick in the face!
“You guys, be careful! Step back,” Uncle Chen rushed out with the hoe and cried, “Everyone, be careful! This rat is ferocious, don’t get bitten!”
A group of laborers charged toward the rat with their weapons.
After all, a rat was still a rat. Even if it had mutated, it was still timid. Seeing that a group of people was charging towards it, the rat froze before making its escape!
Although not brave, it had incredible speed. It raced across the construction site, as fast as lightning.
Uncle Chen and the laborers were courageous, but they were just ordinary humans. They would scare a rat, but it was impossible for them to kill it—which had not been their plan anyway. Their goal had merely been to scare it away.
It was sad that, when anxious, a rat would still bite. After being hit by a brick thrown by old Wu, the rat became visibly riled up. It suddenly jumped and bit into Uncle Chen’s metal hoe. In the blink of an eye, the one-inch thick hoe broke under the impact. Using the opportunity, the rat dashed off, trying to escape. Coincidentally, it ran directly toward Hong Xiaofu.
“Little brother, be careful! Hurry, dodge!” Uncle Chen threw the broken hoe away as he cried, “The rat’s bite can break your bones!”
The rest of the laborers chased after the rat in a hurry. They saw the huge rat dashing toward Hong Xiaofu before making an abrupt stop. Everyone was stunned, and Uncle Chen’s hands turned clammy.
They saw the huge rat standing upright on its hind legs, its front paws extended upright toward the sky. In an instant, the rat fell.
It had knelt!
Hong Xiaofu: “…”
Uncle Chen: “…”
The cigarette between Old Wu’s lips: “…”
Others at the scene who did not know the truth: “…”
