Chapter 34: Your Future
With Regina’s support, Anastasia sets out to find Brandt and tell him how she really feels.
Regina helps her in her search.
The academy is still on break, so people are sparse.
She looks in the hidden room in the library, but she doesn’t see anyone. A few students are reading here and there in the library, but Brandt is not among them.
Walking down the corridor, Anastasia wonders if she should try the boys’ dormitory.
But a student visiting the boys’ dorm when she has no business there would be like spreading rumors.
The thought of causing trouble for Brandt slows Anastasia down.
“Oh…”
Looking around, she sees Brandt coming toward her on the other side of the corridor.
Brandt also seems to have noticed Anastasia, giving her an awkward look.
They approached each other in silence and stopped, facing each other.
“Brandt-senpai…”
She definitely gave Brandt the wrong impression.
Anastasia is about to open her mouth to clear up the misunderstanding, but she doesn’t know what to say.
Brandt’s slightly contorted face and slightly disheveled clothes come into view, and Anastasia is even more confused as she thinks of his shapely face and well-toned body as he removes his upper body clothing.
“Are you okay?”
Brandt gives her a questioning look, but Anastasia can’t even answer him.
With a flapping mouth, as if she were running out of oxygen, her consciousness fades away.
“…Tasha!”
Regina’s voice rang out.
Surprised by what has happened, Anastasia’s consciousness has snapped back.
Regina, who had helped Anastasia before by giving her advice, ran to her with an ogre-like look on her face.
“It’s a little late for that, isn’t it…”
Regina interjected between Anastasia and Brandt, glaring at Brandt.
“I’m disappointed in you, Brandt-senpai! Just because you didn’t get a nice reply from Tasha, you’re running away from your broken relationship with Hoyle…! I will not give Tasha into the hands of such a person!”
Regina confronts Brandt while holding Anastasia, who can’t keep up with the situation at all.
“What? Wait a minute, what’s that? With Hoyle-kun?”
Brandt also seems confused and asks a series of questions in bewilderment.
“Don’t play dumb with me! I heard it for sure! A few minutes ago, Brandt-senpai and Hoyle came out of an empty classroom talking about something shady!”
“Shady…?”
“Your clothes are a mess, your face is burning, and you’re asking whether “it’s not too hard on the body,” “whether it’s not just the magic spell,” and that “you’re great at it too”…! It’s disgusting to even mention it…! And to have intimate relations at school in the middle of the day…It’s filthy!”
Brandt, who had been overwhelmed by Regina’s excited ranting, finally seemed to understand what was going on and let out a deep breath, his eyes downcast.
“It’s… He’s just a fighting partner. I needed some exercise, and Hoyle-kun said he knows martial arts, so we fought lightly without magic spells.”
Calmly, Brandt explains.
Regina, who was angry, suddenly stops moving and freezes.
“…W-What the hell are you babbling about?! I can hear you from over there! It’s your head that’s the problem! Your brain must be rotten!”
Then an indignant Hoyle came rushing in.
Regina’s color faded, and her arms loosened around Anastasia.
“So… fighting is fighting in the true sense of the word…?”
“What else is there to fight about? I thought I had a chance without magic, but I lost in the end! Don’t be stupid!”
Hoyle yells at Regina, who is embarrassed.
It seems he’s taking it out on her, but Regina didn’t seem to have the luxury of worrying about it.
“I-I don’t… well… is it a misunderstanding?”
“How can you make such a misunderstanding! Are you frustrated?!”
“You…You’re the one making a big deal out of this. Don’t yell at me like that! “
“Huh? You’ve hit the nail on the head!”
“That can’t be true! Don’t be stupid!”
Before long, as usual, Regina and Hoyle were arguing.
As Anastasia looked on in amazement, she was gently pulled away.
“…Let’s go over there.”
Brant tells her this, and Anastasia leaves the scene, leaving Regina and Hoyle behind.
They walked silently into a hidden room in the library.
“Well… Really, I was just sparring with Hoyle-kun. I just… I just wanted to punch something… No, I just wanted to move my body and not think about it.”
Brandt opened his mouth with a wry smile.
He seems to be making excuses, but he has lost his cool, and his true feelings are leaking out.
But it hurts me to think that Anastasia is probably to blame for this state of affairs.
“Brandt-senpai… I apologize for my behavior yesterday. The truth is that I really like Brandt-senpai too…”
Gathering her courage, Anastasia’s voice trailed off, but she somehow managed to finish.
Brandt’s eyes widen, and he looks as if he can’t believe what he is hearing.
“…Really?”
“Really…”
Asked in a shaky voice, Anastasia turns around sheepishly and answers.
However, that alone would not be enough to explain her attitude.
This does not mean that Researchers Foster knew that he would eventually lose his life.
“Brandt-senpai, could I tell you about my background…?”
So Anastasia decided to talk about her background.
It is very easy to understand why Regina thinks that Anastasia has family ties and is in a position where she can’t choose her partner.
In fact, there is no doubt that Anastasia has such ties.
——In my last life, I had a fiancée. Not at the moment, but it is very likely that in a little while that will come up again in this life.
Anastasia spoke quite openly about her background.
She has a half-sister and has been continually compared to her, as well as being a likely pawn in a political marriage.
Brandt remained silent and listened attentively.
Finally, when Anastasia had finished, Brandt took a deep breath.
“… I expected it to some extent, but it’s more than I expected. That’s a social status difference between you and me as a commoner.”
Brandt murmurs softly, raising an eyebrow.
Anastasia begins to shake.
It seems to have convinced him, but at the same time, it makes Anastasia seem like a troublesome partner.
Anastasia realizes that Brandt might leave her because he doesn’t want any trouble.
But even without Researcher Foster’s involvement, this is something that will become a problem sooner or later and cannot be kept hidden.
“Maybe I should become a court magician. It would give me more status. But that’s still not enough…”
While Anastasia was plagued by anxiety, Brandt began to mutter and ponder.
“Brandt-senpai… Is that okay?”
“If Anastasia-san doesn’t want me, I won’t hold it against her, but if she does, I won’t give up. I will just work to get the future I want.”
When Anastasia asked him, Brandt replied firmly.
Involuntarily, tears well up in Anastasia’s eyes.
She feels ashamed of herself for feeling alone and afraid of the footsteps of the Grim Reaper.
Anastasia is not alone. With Brandt, they will shape the future together.
