Chapter 11
It was clear that the voice that was overlaid on top of the fireworks was Yu-gyeom’s. At first, it sounded like a desperate confession of love, but I knew very well that in Yu-gyeom’s case, it didn’t mean that. Growing up without anyone who truly loved him, Yu-gyeom was so obsessed with affection that it seemed abnormal. Even if it was fake, it didn’t matter. In the first place, Yu-gyeom was not interested in who the person was to the point of forgetting their name after breaking up. He just wanted to forget for a moment the horrendous loneliness.
“It’s okay if it’s a lie, so can’t I tell you that you still like me?” Like the habit of reacting with the body before the head, he craved affection.
Can you? If not, then nevermind. It was just that kind of a playful whisper. As if rushing me to answer, I could feel the strength in the hand holding mine. However, as I rolled my eyes backwards because there was no answer I could spit out, a sweater dyed red caught my eye.
“Blo- blood!”
Without realizing it, I reached out and lightly touched the sweater, and a moan escaped through the tightly closed mouth. When I looked closely, there was even a cold sweat on his white face, and his lips were parched and pale. I hurriedly searched for the door, but only then did I realize that the wall that was not supposed to open from the inside was closed shut.
“The door…”
Yu-gyeom burst into laughter at my bewildered murmur.
“You’re surprisingly naive.”
Doubting my ears, Yu-gyeom walked past me, who was frozen, and headed to the bookshelf. The moment he pulled out a book, the wall moved as if nothing.
“I was startled because I thought I was caught.”
‘Are you fed up now?’ Yu-gyeom shook the book and smiled as he looked at me with eyes containing words that could not be uttered.
“Romeo and Juliet, do you like it?”
“Sit anywhere.”
Fortunately, there was no such thing as a blood-drenched dungeon or anything beyond the wall I exited carefully. The wide, open, circular space was filled with furniture in soft nude tones that resembled him. It was much larger than Cha Yeonbyeol’s room at Baekcheon. More than half of the walls that surrounded the round space were made of glass, offering the night view of the city. It was beautiful, but I didn’t have the nerve to spare my attention to the fantasy-like landscape. I sat down on the nearby sofa, highly aware of Yu-gyeom’s presence. I carefully took the Romeo and Juliet book on the table. As if someone had read the book until it was worn out, the original red cover was faded and pale.
Maybe Yu-gyeom read it? This classic romance?
‘Oh gosh.’
At that time, Yu-gyeom suddenly took off his sweater, and I flinched visibly. There was some distance, but the room was not divided, but literally open, so I could clearly see him standing in front of the closet. But before I could even feel embarrassment, I gasped involuntarily at the many scars on Yu-gyeom’s back, enough to say they covered it whole. The long scars were the most noticeable, as if he had been hit with a whip, but even the smallest scars that looked like shots or stands were placed everywhere. I knew there wouldn’t be anyone on this floor without a single scar, but still, it was really bad. The wounds seemed to show Yu-gyeom’s life, so I felt suffocated.
He picked up the bandage on the bedside table and walked over to me. Not knowing where to put my eyes on his exposed upper body, I fixed my gaze only on the marble floor. The sofa shook as if Yu-gyeom sat right next to me.
‘Why are you sitting here when there are so many seats?’ It was a moment when my legs trembled while I screamed inwardly and then,
“I can’t reach it.”
A bandage was placed in front of me. I didn’t understand what it meant, so I just looked down at the bandage blankly.
“Can you change the bandages?”
It was only when I looked up as the low voice came out, saw his face and then at the bandages dripping with blood that I understood. As I reluctantly accepted the bandage, the corners of Yu-gyeom’s lips rose softly. I pondered why I would be changing the bandages of my kidnapper, but remembering my situation, I reached toward him. I carefully untied the bandages around his waist, revealing a deep, bleeding wound.
“Did you go to the hospital?”
“No, I didn’t.”
“You didn’t go?”
“There are so many people who would like to know I was hurt.”
My body stiffened at the words that came unprepared. Yu-gyeom’s smiling face came into my view.
“Perhaps… Is the princess like that too?”
“No– not at all!”
Yu-gyeom chuckled as if my overreaction was funny, and I pouted and tightened the bandages trying not to make it obvious.
“Ah!”
“It hurts? My mistake.”
“I was wondering about when you would be worried about me being hurt.”
Yu-gyeom’s complaints flowed through one ear as I wrapped several layers of bandaging. After fixing it carefully, the moment I raised my head, I was immediately speechless confronted with him facing me. Yu-gyeom looked at me with his chin on the sofa as if he was complaining and smiled. The gleaming face was still unreal.
“It’s all done.”
“Thank you, Princess.”
I saw a bright smile that made my eyes fold, but then I asked about something that had bothered me since before.
“Why do you keep calling me princess?”
“Why? You don’t like it?”
“Yeah, a lot. I mean, yes, it’s bothersome.”
When I tried to sound polite at the end of my words, Yu-gyeom burst out laughing and reached out and brushed away my hair. His cold fingertips brushed past my cheeks. I swallowed my trembling breath involuntarily at the gesture.
“Just drop formalities. That sounds better.”
“Then speak informally to me, too.”
“It’s a habit.”
“It must be a habit to call a woman a princess.”
The corners of his eyes grew thick.
“It’s not that.”
Just as I frowned at the words I couldn’t understand– Bang-! There was a loud roar and nervous footsteps.
“Yu-gyeom!”
Before I could even be startled by the loud voice, a new face came into my sight. A man with curly poodle-like hair and furious eyebrows inhaled a rough breath as if he had run in a hurry. The man wiped his ruffled clothes as he looked at me and raised his sharp eyes.
“You, you…”
Yu-gyeom smiled softly toward the man who was struggling to speak.
“Chan.”
In fact, from the moment of his first appearance, I roughly guessed who he was. Lee Chan, I definitely remembered him because he occupied a major portion of the cast in the original work. The one who helped Yu-gyeom the most in driving out all his blood relatives and occupying Utopia.
“Is that all you have to say to me now? I couldn’t even see a strand of your hair because you were hanging out with a girl!”
His character would jump through fire and water and speak without thinking and was just the same as I had read in the original.
“What’s going on here?”
Even Yu-gyeom’s face wouldn’t stop him.
“Your father said to come and see him.”
‘By father, are you talking about the boss of Utopia?’ Unlike Baekcheon, who calls Baek Hawon boss, in Utopia, all members of the organization call Yu-gyeom’s father ‘boss.’
“No, by the way, who is that woman?!”
“The princess.”
“Hey!!”
Lee Chan and I shouted at Yu-gyeom at the same time, and Lee Chan looked at me with round, surprised eyes like a rabbit. He had a fiery personality that could run at you like a crazy dog, but he was a genius whose head turned faster than anyone else. It wasn’t for nothing that Yu-gyeom was able to survive without any backing in Utopia and have the highest place. He wasn’t an easy opponent, but I knew exactly what Lee Chan wanted. If I used that point in moderation and bought a certain degree of liking, it would be easier. As I smiled warmly at him, his eyebrows narrowed.
“Nut pruncuss…” Without erasing the smile aimed at Lee Chan, I whispered through my clenched teeth to Yu-gyeom not to call me princess, and he smiled and nodded his head. His gaze was still fixed on me as he spoke softly.
“I brought her from Baekcheon.”
At Yugyeom’s words, Lee Chan’s jaw dropped. He covered his open mouth with his hand and shook his head in displeasure.
“You do strange things every day, but this time you picked up something beyond strange?” Lee Chan blatantly pointed his finger at me.
Something strange. It wasn’t completely wrong, but it was very offensive to hear while being pointed. Thus, I gladly corrected his misunderstanding.
“He didn’t pick up something weird, he picked up something huge.”
“…What?”
“I’m Baek Ha-won’s younger sister.”
“Baek Hawon who…” Lee Chan’s face slowly changed to serious as he slurred his words. And when he finally realized his eyes widened.
“Sir Yu-gyeom is not here right now.”
“I’m going to see my younger brother, do I need your permission? You wanna die?”
Suddenly a loud noise from outside broke the silence. Yu-gyeom jumped up as he rolled his eyes anxiously wondering what the situation was with the voice growing higher as if they were asking to listen to it on purpose.
“Lee Chan, Princess, please.”
“What?”
Seeing Lee Chan, who couldn’t understand what he was saying, Yu-gyeom cursed low. I doubted my ears when I heard the murmur.
“No matter how much sir Yu-hwa enters without permission–”
A familiar name stuck in my brain amid the commotion outside.
Yu-hwa? If Yu-hwa, that meant he was one of the Yu half-brothers. Among them, he was the one who hated and tormented Yu-gyeom the most. He was the successor to Utopia at the moment. Just as I recalled that mad-dog-like name–
Hwiik~ In the blink of an eye, my wrists were grabbed and pulled. Standing defenseless, I was helplessly led. When I came to my senses, I felt a soft bed behind my back. Soon, Yu-gyeom’s face, which had been covering the ceiling, was filled with my question marks. Bang-!
“Younger bro~!!”
A voice louder than the roar of the door slamming open resounded from not far away. Yu-gyeom seemed frozen for a moment, then made eye contact with me and smiled languidly, rolling up the corners of his mouth.
“What are you doing right no–”
“Shh.”
The focus in the direct gaze gently tightened my breath.
“I’m going to kiss you from now on.”
The corners of the curled up mouth were dark. With that far-off beautiful smile, for a brief moment, I felt as if time had slowed to a crawl.
‘No, but wait– what did you just say?’ In embarrassment, I hurriedly grabbed Yu-gyeom’s arm, and he held it tightly.
“Don’t be surprised.”
Chuckles scattered in the air. And the distance between both of us narrowed instantly. As the eyes that pinned me came too close to bear, I finally shut my eyes tightly.
Before I could even prepare my heart, hot lips met mine and my breath was swallowed.
