Chapter 13
The silvery hair, the shirt supposedly white, and even the slender fingertips sweeping through the wet hair– everything was red. Among all, I couldn’t take my eyes off the shirt soaked in blood that I believed was originally red. I held my breath and stepped back.
‘Is that all blood? Did you hurt? Why?’ I was dizzy as if my reasoning had been paralyzed.
‘You can’t die.’ Thousands of thoughts inflated and exploded inside my head the moment I reached that last one. I knew it. It was an ironic fear that tightened my heart. The emotions I felt while reading the novel came out and swallowed me whole. The day I die stupidly was just around the corner. However, I couldn’t erase the emotions accumulated each time I turned a page over.
What? Doesn’t everyone have one? A movie, novel, or celebrity that is impressive enough to change a part of my life. This novel was like that for me. Yu-gyeom was like that for me. The last chapter, which ended with Yu-gyeom’s death, flashed before my eyes.
“Are you sick?”
A cold hand covered my forehead. Yu-gyeom, who had been standing in front of the door at some distance, was looking down at me from up close.
“Lee Chan said you were doing so well that it was a burden.”
“. . .”
“Ah- sorry. I forgot that my hands are dirty.”
Yu-gyeom smiled and retracted his hand. His fingers, white as the unsullied snow at dawn, were scarlet. Looking closely, his messy appearance covered in blood was even more terrifying.
“Are you hurt?” My voice was trembling and the words that came out blurred at the end. Without realizing it, I reached toward Yu-gyeom, but I couldn’t reach him. I got impatient when I didn’t get an answer right away. The eyes I met fluttered slightly, but it was brief.
Yu-gyeom let out a scoff-like sigh and slowly lowered his head to put our foreheads together. I could feel hot breath overlapping the cold air.
“I don’t think you have a fever.” The soft, low resonance of his voice clearly echoed through the touching skin. I was held in the eyes that stared at me closely. When I realized that, I felt a little strange, and my shaky mind calmed down in an instant.
He wasn’t hurt. It wasn’t Yu-gyeom’s blood that dyed his shirt scarlet. In another sense, I felt my heart tightening.
As I pushed his shoulder with my fist, Yu-gyeom stepped back meekly. My hand that touched him felt uncomfortably damp and red. It resembled the blood I would shed, and my head cooled down.
Yu-gyeom who killed Cha Yeonbyeol.
You are destined to kill me.
“I wasn’t doing well at all.”
The reality, not fiction, was brutal. That cruelty drove me to the edge. Yu-gyeom came. This was an opportunity. A chance to change my fate of being killed by Yu-gyeom.
“You weren’t coming.”
After choosing carefully, I uttered words that would shake him. As I wasn’t the main character, I had no other choice at the edge of a cliff. Just the fact that I was here was enough to say that even if it was twisted, fate wouldn’t deviate from the main line of the original story. I was afraid that Yu-gyeom would not come to see me. Whenever I woke up I was afraid of being on the last day of the festival. I felt like I would really die if that day arrived without doing anything at all.
“I waited.” I looked up at Yu-gyeom and smiled. I didn’t expect love enough to jump in front of the gun in my stead. But just enough not to kill me. Just enough to worry about me even in a situation where he might have to.
I hope you are swayed at least that much.
A soft and thin smile was drawn on Yu-gyeom’s face as he silently listened to me.
“…Why doesn’t it look like you’re lying?”
I must have misheard the whisper that sounded almost like laughter.
I chewed my nails anxiously. It was the first time I realized that new habits that didn’t exist could be created when the surroundings changed suddenly. Yu-gyeom disappeared from my view, saying he needed a shower, and that was already 20 minutes ago. As I listened to the sound of the water that would be cut off soon, I felt like I was burning inside.
“What do I do? What should I…”
I wanted to think of the situation as a mere opportunity, but when I faced Yu-gyeom, I felt scared. My strategy was to win Yu-gyeom, but what can I do? What if I make one mistake and speed my death date? As I leaned my forehead against the window, the heat cooled. The cold temperature brought back memories of a moment ago. The face that was pressed against my forehead, the eyes that twinkled closely, and the softly curved mouth.
The moment the sound of the water finally stopped, I slammed my head with my palm.
‘What if I can’t?! I’ll yell, cry, and hang on to him.’ It has been a dead-end since I met Yu-gyeom. There was no other option.
Click– As soon as I ran to the sofa and sat down, the door opened and Yu-gyeom slowly appeared through the mist. Droplets of water dripped from the tip of his wet hair and ran down his white skin. His characteristic languid and dangerous atmosphere deepened even more. He smiled at me with moist eyes.
“Did you wait?”
That smile was quite foul. As Yu-gyeom bent over and sat on the sofa in front of me, the tight-fitting shower robe opened slightly. I hurriedly turned my gaze away from the chest that was exposed.
“You said you were waiting. But you don’t look at me.”
At the gentle but irresistible voice, I turned and finally met the gaze looking at me. There was nothing that could be read from the eyes that had completely erased emotions and desires. Sitting cross-legged, I half-covered my mouth with my hand on my chin and laughed low.
“Yes. I waited.”
Imitating Yu-gyeom and faking a smile was pretty easy.
“Why did the princess wait for me?”
Just like the face looking at me now, when I think of Yu-gyeom’s real face, who was always smiling but dead inside, I feel more desperate.
“I can’t see the person holding my lifeline, so how could I sleep soundly?”
“. . .”
“I have been waiting like a puppy longing for its master so much that my tail fell off.”
Yu-gyeom scoffed lightly and smiled softly, creasing the corners of his eyes. Leaning deeply on the sofa, his smile ignited a sense of mischievousness.
“You slept well for a puppy, though?”
Pfft. The arm holding my chin slid over the bridge.
“Throwing pillows out of bed must be a sleeping habit.”
My sleeping habit, which I haven’t been able to fix for 25 years, was put in Yu-gyeom’s mouth. I was speechless at the unexpected response.
“I overslept because I slept so comfortably in my bed.”
Yu-gyeom pointed exactly at the wall I was inspecting before. The back of my head tingled as if I had been hit with a hammer.
‘Lee Chan, you motherf–…!’
There was no way that Lee Chan, who had been by my side for almost 24 hours, didn’t know. It must have been difficult pretending, huh?
The desire to find him right away and grab him by the neck grew stronger, but I could still feel Yu-gyeom’s gaze fixed on me. Staying composed was the priority.
“Don’t you know that what you see isn’t everything? Look, look at the dark circles that came down from the nightmare.”
I smiled, pointing under my eyes innocently. At that moment, just like a snake moving to hunt its prey, Yu-gyeom rose from his seat and came to me in a terrifyingly quick and smooth motion. It was not until the moment that droplets, which flowed on my silvery hair, fell on my cheeks that I noticed him.
“Where?”
Yu-gyeom stroked my eyes with his thumb. It was a gentle touch as if touching a glass marble, but a strong feeling rose on the back of my neck.
“It’ll be bad if you get spoiled.”
For a moment, I felt as if my life was in danger. The eyes looking down at me shone like a knife prepared to stab me. I used to trust human intuition to some extent, but right at that moment, I desperately wanted my intuition to be wrong. Otherwise, from now on, my words and actions would be like digging my grave with my own hands.
“That’s why, from now on, you should come when I’m awake.”
I held his wrist covering my face, folded the corners of my eyes, and smiled sweetly. For a very short moment, Yu-gyeom’s forehead narrowed slightly. After all, what crazy person would say something like this to their kidnapper?
But I needed it. A chance to whisper sweet words to Yu-gyeom using what I knew. Time to lure him enough so he won’t kill me.
“If possible, every day. As I said, I can’t sleep because I’m anxious when I can’t see the person holding my lifeline.”
“. . .”
“It would be very bad if I died from suffering a mental illness caused by long sorrow.”
The languid eyes filled with the flickering lights gradually took on a darker hue. I felt like I would be sucked into it. There was a brief silence then his low-pitched laughter broke the stillness.
“That would be troublesome.”
As Yu-gyeom’s body leaned a little further toward me, a large shadow completely engulfed me. As he approached, I backed away until my back touched the back of the sofa. With one hand, he grabbed the back of the sofa on which I was leaning. A cold finger wrapped around my chin and gently brushed my lips.
“But do you know what you’re talking about?”
With his back to the light, his face was covered in darkness, and only his sparkling eyes were crystal clear. But instead of looking up at Yu-gyeom with frightened eyes, I smiled and said,
“You and I, I mean, let’s live in hell.”
“Let’s go together. To my hell.”
Just like Yu-gyeom whispered to me and smiled.
