The Resetting Lady - Chapter 1-7
The attendant Bowen followed them from a distance as he carried their luggage but Isela didn’t like him, a man, following them. More precisely, rather than Bowen, she was bothered about the maid she had hit.
“Thinking about it, it’s about yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“I saw something terrible.”
“Oh, is that so.”
“I… it’s that maid. Where is she? That dark skinned one.”
“Well… Isela, she truly reflected upon herself.”
“No, no, I am not talking about that.”
She nervously knocked her feet. With a worrisome face, Karen answered. “She requested for a vacation, saying that she wanted to rest for a while.”
“Ah… Thank goodness.”
Karen thought for a moment. Would it be better to question her more closely or act ignorant? Thinking rationally, she felt it better to bury it.
The reason why Karen chose Nancy as her first prey was not only because of the good time she would have, but also because that, even though she doesn’t have any huge impact on the story, she has a very close contact with her in her daily life. Big events like Karen going to Isela’s villa or meeting Raymond would not sway even if Nancy was not there.
So if Isela doesn’t ask, she would have just gone ahead with her next murder.
“What did you see?” Karen chose to be curious.
“I felt like I saw that maid with her throat cut off.”
“What?”
“It was out of blue right….? You must know since you also saw it, that the bed was clean and the necklace was also there.”
“Her Ne,…..Neck?”
“Yes, thinking about it I just can’t believe what I saw.” Isela showed a slicing motion near her throat.
“You must have seen wrong.”
“That really….” It’s strange, I didn’t cut off her head.
“Is she okay, that maid?”
This was interesting.
* * *
“Oops.”
“I am … I am sorry.”
In the place of Nancy who left on her vacation, Dona, a young maid with black braided hair, came to serve her. She was only a year older than Karen, so she could only be assigned to some small errands. Karen was just about to ask when Nancy would return but hurriedly closed her mouth taking a deep breath as she chastised herself for her forgetfulness. The passage of time had started to mess with her memories.
“It’s okay. Wet the comb first then comb the hair.”
For the clumsy Dona to come here, it seems like work must have increased. She already started to miss the all-rounder Nancy. Was the meeting with the Evans this long? Anyway for Karen who already knew the result, it was a troublesome routine.
If the roads get repaired as suggested by the Evans, when people eat in, the Haier Fief won’t be able to handle such a number. Rationally speaking, the project which needs some decades to complete will be taken care of by the Evans, who already bought the nearby areas in a matter of months. As they forcefully collected the insufficient taxes, they made people go broke, and finally Haiers would end up with giving up all their rights.
Should I call it vicious? Karen closed her eyes.
She didn’t feel any anger towards Evans. Just that his manipulation was quite quick-witted. 17 years old Haier Karen. Everyone looked at her as a 17 year old girl but inside she was more than 100 but it doesn’t mean that she knows everything there is to know.
She repeated her 17th year for 100 years. But it doesn’t mean that she was more knowledgeable than those who have made great discoveries. It’s not a question of congenital or her environment rather it’s about effort.
She clearly understood the matters between males and females, but experience in these types of business matters was a whole different question. After she repeated the same work after some 10 or so years, she attempted to sabotage the business as she tried to stop her father. But at the end of everything, the best method was to leave this hell and pressure them later through Raymond. Till now, the revenge Karen could take was only this much.
Once there was a time when she tried to protect Haiers from the pressure of Evans. This life would also pass, so it was useless to work against them, but that thought about her share that was to be snatched by them – it was not pleasant.
“How many people come from Evans?”
“That…. Verdick Evans, his daughter Isela Evans, 3 associate professionals, 2 servants and a maid. The professionals brought a servant each respectively and 2 exclusive horsemen.”
“Your mouth got bigger.” [T/N: Because she got flustered at first and now she replied very fluently and with detail]
“Yes.”
“It must be hard for you.”
“.….yes.”
Dona didn’t hide her hostility. It was somewhat uncomfortable at that moment. She was used to the barely expressive maids of Raymond’s mansion and Nancy who took care of her like a mother, so someone other than them, she felt awkward to express herself.
Yes, these servants and maids were of Haier’s and those Evans were the ones who tried to take over this family. It was obvious for those born and brought up in this fief to be hostile.
“There are 5 that must be cared for as guests, so the work will increase 3 fold. Even though it has been snowing for 3 hours recently. Do you know when they will leave?”
“Don’t know. I am also hoping for them to leave soon.”
They won’t disappear until they acquire this family.
As she washed her face with cold water, Karen realized that this was the start of another day even though it was still dark. Karen, who was up all night last day, felt agonized by the sinking exhaustion. Her first thought was that it was agonizing to die but, soon, she felt it was quite funny. It was extravagant for a murderer to say that it was uncomfortable being exhausted.
