The Story Is Not Over Yet - Chapter 140
Chapter 140
He seemed to know everything.
Livia looked at Zagnac with a trembling gaze. The purple eyes she saw up close for the first time were shining as if they were casting a spell on her. She soon opened her mouth cautiously without even realizing it.
“…How do you know?”
His red lips curved into an arc. Then he bowed down and whispered close to Livia’s ear.
“I am not human.”
“!”
“I am… the devil.”
Her heart thumped at Zagnac’s whisper. The word he brought out, ‘devil,’ was swirling through her head. It couldn’t be the kind of devil she was thinking about though he said he wasn’t human.
Livia looked at him, her eyes confused.
It couldn’t be. It was clear that he was lying to keep her away from him. As she wanted him to stop talking, Zagnac waved his index finger at her first.
“It’s not to keep you away, but the truth.”
“….!”
“You must know what a devil is… it seems like you’ve been studying ancient magic lately.”
She could not refute any word he had said. Devil.
It was said that they were God’s errand runners or an evil being who took human souls instead of fulfilling their human desires. In another book, angels and devils wer ultimately the same subordinate, but she doesn’t think so. At least angels didn’t bring out the desires in humans the way the devils did.
“Duke Ferial, you’re really…”
“Yes. I really am that devil. So, do you get it now? You can never marry me.”
Zagnac’s stern reply startled Livia, that she covered her chest with her hands and stood up. She backed away from Zagnac. She was worried that if she were near him, her deepest desire would be revealed and she would lose her soul to him.
“Oh, dear. Even so, I have no intention of taking your soul. It doesn’t taste good.”
“Miss, Miss Vellista…”
With her back against the wall, she called Azela’s name in a trembling voice. Zagnac frowned in displeasure when he heard Livia calling Azela’s name as if he was the only one who could call her.
“Does, does Miss Vellista know that you are the devil?”
Livia gulped dryly.
In the midst of this, Azela’s face flickered in her mind for a moment. If he was really evil, she had to keep Azela away from him. As she asked out of concern for Azela, Zagnac erased his offended expression and nodded her head in satisfaction.
“It’s nice to see you being concerned and protecting my escort knight.”
“You didn’t do anything to Miss Vellista, did you?”
“Oh no, Princess of Livia. There is nothing for you to worry about.”
He laughed off Livia’s concern. Nothing to worry about? Strangely, Zagnac, who talked Azela, did not look like a devil. Rather, he looked more like a human than a human. At first glance, it even seemed pathetic.
Livia gently lowered her hands that were placed on her chest.
“…Why did you tell me?”
“What are you talking about?”
“The fact that you are not human… I could use this as an excuse to blackmail you, or I could share this to someone else.”
“Then, I will have to kill you.”
Zagnac laughed with eerie words, but strangely, Livia wasn’t afraid of him at all. She never thought he could kill her.
Livia moved her back from the wall. He said that he arranged this meeting because his escort knight, Azela, asked him to marry her though he refused properly. Not only that but he even revealed his true identity like this… to prevent himself from marrying her.
She tremblingly asked.
“…If you kill me, Miss Vellista won’t stay still.”
She had doubts about that. However, Zagnac’s fingers twitched at her words. Only then did Livia become convinced that he couldn’t kill her. As long as there was Azela, he couldn’t do everything Azela didn’t like.
“Duke Fer—no, you…”
“….”
“You seem to like Miss Vellista.”
Her confidence made Zagnac’s shoulders twitch.
He didn’t give an answer himself, yet his tightly pressed lips gave her the answer. The reason he revealed his identity to her was simple. He wanted to prevent his marriage to Livia by revealing that he was the devil.
“What nonsense.”
For a moment, she felt embarrassed as she worried about Azela for a moment. She had nothing to worry about. He was guarding her instead. It was ridiculous.
Livia took a step closer to him with a puzzled expression and uttered strongly.
“Lies.”
“….”
“To think that the devil likes humans and has human emotions. I have never read it in any book.”
“…That’s something I’ve never heard of either.”
Zagnac’s voice, as he whispered quietly, was bitter. The smiling smile was pitiful. He really meant it. Livia touched her forehead as her legs were staggering.
“…How?”
The question was strange, but she couldn’t understand it.
She couldn’t understand how someone who had everything and could do everything would like mere humans. It was because humans would be something that was incapable of anything from their point of view, they were just creatures who couldn’t do anything.
“I know. I am curious about that, too.”
“Does Miss Vellista know your feelings?”
Zagnac shook his head at Livia’s question. When Azela was mentioned, he acted like a meek sheep. When Livia asked him, he answered meekly and did not threaten her. What kind of absurd situation was this?
“…Did you tell me your true identity because you didn’t want Miss Vellista to ask you to marry me? Or is it because you want to protect Miss Vellista from getting hurt?”
“I understand the first sentence, but I don’t understand the second sentence… What does it mean to protect my escort knight from harm?”
“I thought Duke Feri… no, you knew.”
“What?”
Zagnac asked back as he looked like he really didn’t know.
Livia frowned. Suddenly, Azela’s gaze at him flashed in Livia’s mind. Azela also liked him. Even so, she never brought it out of her mouth. Livia had always thought it was out of consideration for her, but it wasn’t.
“…Miss Vellista.”
Perhaps if Livia never said it, maybe Azela would never speak her feelings out of her mouth for the rest of her life… This might be a secret Azela wants to keep. Because of that, she wondered if she could say that.
“My escort knight asked me to marry you.”
Even so, Azela hid her feelings for herself. Livia clenched her fists tightly. If she didn’t say it, maybe she could use him, the devil, to marry.
Livia raised her head.
“Miss Vellista likes you.”
“….!”
If Azela gave it for Livia’s happiness, it was only natural that she would wish for Azela’s happiness, too. Azela was her first friend. Now, everything made sense. It was easy to understand why Azela hadn’t spoken about her feelings after thinking about it for a bit.
“I’ve always thought Miss Vellista was hiding those feelings for my sake… Now I understand why did she hide such visible emotions so desperately.”
“What?”
“…It’s because you weren’t human.”
Zagnac rubbed his chin with Livia’s words. He really looked like he couldn’t grasp it at all.
“…Is it so important to you humans that I am not human?”
“To be precise, it doesn’t matter to know that you’re not human. It matters that your lifespan differs from a human lifespan.”
“What does that mean?”
“A human lifespan is a short moment for you devils, right?”
Zagnac replied to Livia’s question with a short nod.
