Chapter 11: Chapter 11 – Coincidence

The first subject after the morning study session was English class. As soon as Miss Wang entered the classroom, the first thing she did was the signature ruffling of her seaweed-like curly hair. She then spoke a large chunk of sentences in English in a sweet voice.
She returned from studying abroad in the US and spoke pure American English. During class, she would usually speak in English before translating it into Chinese.
Since English had just become a part of the high school curriculum in recent years, there was little emphasis and attention paid to it. Hence, whenever she spoke English, the students would look at her in confusion and only understand what she was saying after she translated her words into Chinese. For example, she told them to take out their completed homework for discussion today, but all of them stayed still.
She smiled helplessly and was just about to translate what she said in Chinese when she discovered that one person in the last row of the classroom had actually moved and taken out her English paper to lay it on the table.
Miss Wang was rather surprised, and she hurriedly raised her head to look, only to have her smile frozen on her face awkwardly.
It was Xia Wei’an, the lousy student whose grades were always at the bottom of the class!
She was immediately a little disappointed and simply regarded Xia Wei’an’s actions as a coincidence.
Miss Wang instructed them to exchange scripts with their tablemates and then mark each other’s papers.
Usually, Xia Wei’an would not only refuse to pay attention in class, but she would also chat with her peers and end up affecting them. Due to this reason, the homeroom teacher had long arranged for her to sit at a special seat—a single desk right at the back of the classroom beside the wastepaper basket, all by herself!
In doing so, she had to mark and correct her own papers.
Although she was confident in her English proficiency, she was still a little apprehensive until Miss Wang finished explaining. After hearing the explanation, she couldn’t stop smiling as she stared at her correct answers on the paper.
Lu Yuxuan, who was seated in front, didn’t exchange papers with her table mate because Xia Wei’an had already marked her papers with a red pen. She suffered a huge emotional blow when she realized that the mistakes that Xia Wei’an had crossed out were really wrong!
She turned her head to look at Xia Wei’an before staring at the test paper in her hand doubtfully, thinking to herself that Xia Wei’an must have hired a star student at a higher price to do the papers for her!
During the next class, which was Mandarin, they discussed the papers too, and Xia Wei’an basically got all the multiple-choice questions correct, but some of her open-ended questions were now answered comprehensively enough.
Xia Wei’an was quite satisfied with that answer. Having been reborn and given another shot in life, she didn’t want to do poorly in school anymore!
At this point, Lu Yuxuan was too shocked for words. Xia Wei’an’s grades had been at the bottom of the class since her first year in high school and she had even retained for two years. There was no way she could have gotten those questions right. Hence, she was even more certain about her conjecture that Xia Wei’an must have hired a star student to do her homework!
The third class for the day was Geography, which was taught by Miss Song. At the thought of what she had done to her a few days ago, Xia Wei’an was eager to meet Miss Song again to see what expression she would have.
The bell rang, but the person who entered was the balding Math teacher, Mr. Geng!
“Hello students, this is supposed to be Geography class taught by Miss Song, but due to the fact that she has been sent elsewhere on an impromptu learning trip, we don’t know when she’s going to return, so I’ll be taking over her teaching duties for the time being. There will be another teacher coming in to teach you Geography.”
As soon as he said that, the other students in the class started wailing because if Mr. Geng took over, all their Gym and Music classes would all be replaced by Math class!
