Chapter 16: My Fiancé Loves Me Deeply

The person stretched his hand out and was just about to touch her collar when a bolt of lightning struck down from the sky all of a sudden. Although the person reacted immediately and took a few steps back, his hand was still charred black by the bolt.
The gentle face that the man had been faking immediately disappeared. His appearance changed slowly, and he opened his mouth with fangs to roar.
Wen Ran, however, had since taken advantage of the unforeseen event and made a run for her life.
As she ran, she wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth. It was incredibly difficult for her to use her Lightning Summoning Art, because there was not much spiritual power left in her body and it was not enough to support her for another spell.
For some reason, the path which she initially felt was rather short seemed practically endless. Under the candlelit light, a black shadow spiralled over her head, and she soon saw a huge snake’s head hanging down from the stone wall above her.
“Cunning human. I wanted to let you enjoy your last moments so you’ll die in bliss, but you refused my kindness and now have to pay for it!”
It was a monster with a human head and a snake’s body. Although it looked like a human head, it was actually just the shape of a human head. Its face was covered with black scales, and there was a long wound on the right side of its face that marred the neatly arranged scales.
With green slit pupils and a red tongue, anyone who saw it would be beyond terrified.
“I know who you are,” she said, forcing herself to calm down.
“Oh? You do?”
“You were personally subdued by our mansion master back then. The wound on your face was inflicted by his sword.”
The head of the Immortal Ascension Mansion was a kind man. He was the first who suggested setting up a forbidden area at the mansion to imprison those demons and reform them. However, the snake demon had caused a lot of trouble for the human world because of its strong demonic magic, and in the end, the mansion master had to personally imprison the snake demon in the forbidden area.
The incident had become something of a bedtime story for the little Daoist children, and everyone in the Immortal Ascension Mansion knew about it.
“The master of the Immortal Ascension mansion…” The snake demon gritted his teeth as he said those words. It stood to reason that he was extremely resentful of the person who had captured and imprisoned him!
Wen Ran continued, “Our mansion master once said that any demon who has turned over a new leaf can be released from the forbidden area and regain their freedom. You’re one of the great demons and you used to be an overlord. Don’t you want to be free of this place?”
“Freedom? What freedom? It’s all lies! None of the demons here have been able to leave after so many years!”
That was only natural. Demons and devils were naturally bloodthirsty, which made it difficult for any of them to be reformed.
The snake demon coiled up and landed on the ground. That was when Wen Ran realized how much larger it was than she initially imagined. It was so large that it could probably swallow ten of her without a problem!
The snake demon’s greedy eyes sized up the white-clad young lady. “I haven’t seen such a dainty little lady for a long time. You must taste delicious.”
For the record, the snake demon might not have been able to meet someone as delightful as Wen Ran even when it used to be at large outside of the forbidden area and had freedom to do as it pleased.
Wen Ran ran out of ideas to stall for time, but she knew that her life was depending on it. The giant snake kept approaching and she was forced to retreat back into the open area surrounded by water.
“I’m the Mansion Master’s most beloved junior. You’d better give this a second thought, because he won’t forgive you if you so much as dare to lay a finger on me!”
“Hmph! Why would I care? I’d love to see his expression of pain before he dies!”
The snake demon continued to approach Wen Ran and she retreated bit by bit. “My father is the second elder of the Immortal Ascension Mansion and I’m his only daughter. I’m certain that he’s anxiously looking for me right now. There’s still time for you to stop!”
“Who are your other backers?” the snake demon laughed in disdain.
He had been hungry and thirsty for several years. No matter what, he wanted to enjoy this top-grade beauty in front of him.
Wen Ran had been forced to retreat to the stone platform in the center. She said, “My fiancé is the most powerful eldest disciple of the Immortal Ascension Mansion. His strength will allow him to ascend immortality in the future. I should warn you that he loves me deeply. If you lay a hand on me, he’ll slice you into eight pieces, burn your bones, and scatter your ash everywhere!”
“Are you referring to that brat by the name of Shen Wu?” The snake demon laughed sinisterly. “A brat who abandoned a woman and ran for his life has no guts, and I wouldn’t want to eat him even if he delivered himself to my door.”
A laugh was heard. “You’re wrong. Whether or not I have guts is for Ranran to decide. You have no business overstepping your boundaries.”
The voice came from above.
A young man sat on the beam with one leg dangling from the wooden beam and the other resting casually on it. He rested his hand on his knee, which in turn supported his chin, and he tilted his head slightly so that the ends of his hair were swaying with the breeze. He was the perfect embodiment of a free and unrestrained spirit that existed in the young man.
No one knew just how long he had been looking at her, but his black eyes glimmered as his gaze fell on the girl. “Am I right, Junior Sister Wen Ran, the girl who led me to fall deeply in love with you?”
The slight tonal rise at the end of his sentence indicated that he was in a good mood after watching what happened.
Wen Ran felt like dying in embarrassment and raised her hand to cover her face. She was just making everything up to stall for time and she never expected him to hear her!
It might be better to say that he had been deliberately hiding there all along. Perhaps he had been reveling in her miserable situation the entire time!.
Wen Ran started stomping her feet like a monkey as she pointed at him angrily. “Shen Wu!” You’re doing this on purpose!”
He had deliberately left her behind because it would lure out the snake demon that had been lurking in the shadows. As he expected, it showed up in front of Wen Ran as soon as Shen Wu parted ways from her.
Furthermore, Shen Wu also killed two birds with one stone—he was also enjoying the embarrassing and silly things that Wen Ran did in order to survive. He had a blast when watching her make a fool out of herself.
Shen Wu flew down gracefully and his hair swayed along as he landed right in front of Wen Ran. When he saw that her face was red from anger, he tilted his head and said with an innocent face, “I came to save you, didn’t I? Why do you look like you’re blaming me for what happened?”
“You could’ve showed up earlier if you really wanted to save me. Why didn’t you?”
“Because you didn’t call my name?”
When she revealed her backers, the first person she mentioned was the Mansion Master, then Old Wen, and finally him. He appeared the moment she mentioned him, which showed that he was actually a good person?
Wen Ran became speechless due to anger. Like a puffer fish, she puffed up her face, glared at him, and clenched her hands into fists as they hung by her sides.
Shen Wu had a sudden impulse and wondered how it would feel if he poked Wen Ran’s ‘puffer fish’ face.
His fingers moved slightly and he was just about to do so when the snake demon ruined their ‘affectionate’ moment.
“How did you manage to survive the clutches of my descendants?” the snake demon questioned as its eyes turned red.
