Chapter 29: Can’t You Recognize Your Own Fiancé?

Wen Ran stared in shock at the person on the tree before glancing again at the man in black that was standing at the edge of the cliff.
Only then did she notice that the black-clothed man—whose face was covered with a black cloth—lacked the scar on his eyes that she once inflicted on him. When Wen Ran realized that she had gotten the wrong person, she immediately took a few steps back.
She would have been able to act a little more impudently if the man in black was Shen Wu, since he was someone that she knew. However, she did not know what kind of character that black-clothed man was, and she was afraid that she would lose her life if she were to act rashly.
She had always cherished her life, more so after knowing that she was the supporting female in that role.
The black-robed man’s gaze was heavy as he fixed his eyes on the tall young man. “When did you arrive?”
“I don’t remember.” Shen Wu landed casually on the ground. His white clothes fluttered in the wind, and he had a celestial air to him in the middle of the night.
However, his next remark infuriated the man. “So you didn’t notice me? When I followed you after you left the young miss’s room, I thought knew but were just too lazy to care.”
Shen Wu’s eyes revealed a look of innocence. He seemed genuinely curious to know and showed not the slightest intention of mocking him.
The black-clothed man’s eyes turned cold.
Wen Ran hurriedly moved behind Shen Wu and tugged at the corner of his shirt. “What are you doing outside someone’s room in the middle of the night? Shouldn’t you be sleeping instead?”
Shen Wu was so smart that he did not answer and asked instead, “His waist isn’t as slender as mine, his legs aren’t as long as mine, and his skin isn’t as fair as mine. Why did you call him by my name?”
“I…”
“Can’t you recognize your own fiancé? I’m really disappointed in you, Ranran.”
Wen Ran was speechless.
There were a gamut of factors that led to her recognizing the wrong person, all of which stemmed from her anger and anxiousness. Firstly, it was the middle of the night. Secondly, she had seen just how scared Qiu Shui was after being caught. Finally, he had said something so misleading earlier in the day!
She did not want him to make her out to be the unreasonable party with just that sentence.
Wen Ran gritted her teeth. “Didn’t you sneak into her room in the middle of the night to catch her and threaten her?”
“Of course not.” Shen Wu spoke innocently. “Am I that brainless of a person to you, Ranran?”
“Yes.”
Dejected, Shen Wu could only bite down on his green plum.
“Oh?” after the black-clothed man observed Shen Wu for a while, he finally smiled and said, “The young master who came from the Immortal Ascension Mansion doesn’t seem to be as humble and polite as the rumors say.”
Shen Wu kept quiet for a moment.
Wen Ran translated it for him, “He’s bad-mouthing you, Eldest Senior Brother.”
“First of all, I never hit you. Second of all, I didn’t curse you. Who are you to speak ill of me?”
The black-clothed person seemed to be very unaccustomed to such childish way of speaking. He did not follow through with Shen Wu’s conversation and instead said straightforwardly, “What happened today has nothing to do with you at all. You all can just pretend you didn’t see anything. The smart thing to do is leave, and quickly.”
Shen Wu looked at Wen Ran.
Wen Ran immediately interpreted it for him, “What he’s saying is that people like you who are timid and weak shouldn’t even think about going against him. He will attack us if we don’t escape.”
The black-clothed man’s eyelids twitched. That was probably the first time he had seen someone being so good at fanning the flames.
“If I run away, then I won’t be considered one of the strong anymore,” Shen Wu said unhurriedly.
Wen Ran’s probing gaze fell on Shen Wu. He seemed to always care about whether he was strong or not, including that time in the cave of the forbidden area when she wanted to drag him out and escape. He even had to specifically emphasize that he was very strong.
“Who cares if he’s strong or weak?” the man in black laughed. “That’s just an empty title in this game of life. What’s so important about it?”
“Oh, but it’s very important,” Shen Wu said as he extended his hand towards Wen Ran, “because only the strong can make women fall for them.”
His one-of-a-kind answer caused the sage-like aura that was created by his fluttering white clothes to disappear completely.
Wen Ran was already used to Shen Wu’s strange way of thinking, so she did not find it strange at all. However, the black-clothed man opposite her was utterly speechless.
Shen Wu, who still had his hand stretched out, called out unhappily to her, “Ranran.”
Wen Ran looked at the green plum in his hand for a few seconds and took it moments later.
Shen Wu was satisfied with her actions at last. “Help me keep it safe. I still feel like eating it later.”
The color of the green plum’s flesh made it easy for anyone to tell that the green plum was very much unripe and still very sour.
Wen Ran was still wondering why he valued this fruit so much when a gust of wind rose from beneath her. Shen Wu had already taken the sword from her hand and his figure flickered. In a breath, he had completely disappeared from her side.
The next moment, there was a sound of clashing weapons.
As soon as Shen Wu’s ghost-like figure appeared, the black-clothed person relied on his extraordinary reaction speed to conjure up a long sword and block the attack.
After that attack came an immediate slash, and no one had the chance to breathe.
The black-robed man could originally still stand firm and withstand the attack, but he frowned soon after. Shen Wu had an agile figure, and every move that he made was full of killing intent. However, the black-robed man could not sense the killing intent on Shen Wu’s body, which meant that he was completely unable to rely on his cultivator’s instincts to judge Shen Wu’s position based on the the killing intent.
Moreover, the moves used by this youth were indeed the orthodox swordsmanship of the Immortal Ascension Mansion, but in each of his moves existed an unpredictable and dangerous modification that was impossible to guard against. Lo and behold, the most senior disciple of a famous sect actually possessed a certain sense of devilishness.
The black-clothed man—who was deep in thought—was caught off guard and a cut was inflicted on the sword by his arm. Blood immediately began dripping to the ground and he took two steps back right at once.
Shen Wu stopped as well and had an amazingly calm aura on his body.
Something was not right though.
The black-clothed man’s frown deepened.
Shen Wu chuckled and swung his long sword. The fresh blood dripped to the ground like a blooming red plum blossom and he said, “Your blood smells even better than the blood of many other creatures I’ve encountered before. I like it very much.”
Every single word was spoken with a smile in his voice to reveal the joy that he was feeling at that moment.
The situation felt even more dangerous.
The black-clothed man did not even blink, and the young man took advantage of the pervading smell of blood to appear right in front of him. It was too late for him to block the attack, so he could only turn around to avoid it. It inadvertently led the rope in his injured hand to fall from his hand.
Wen Ran, who had just taken the opportunity to sneak to the edge of the cliff and save the Qiu Shui, saw the rope slide rapidly down the cliff. In a moment of desperation, she immediately pounced over and tried to grab the rope.
However, she had underestimated the weight of the person on the other end. She did not manage to pull the rope up, but instead ended up being pulled down by it.
The night wind resonated with the words that she blurted out before her figure disappeared, “DAMN!”
