Chapter 30: Adeline’s Revenge
Deep in my heart, a bold conjecture sprouted.
My gut told me there was something Noble was keeping from Adeline. It was a secret that not even a pillow talker could tell. What exactly was this secret?
Could it be related to my mother?
Thinking of this, I subconsciously turned my gaze to Noble. Just as I was about to open my mouth to probe, Noble seemed to have sensed my intentions. His eyes quickly swept over me, and he spoke before I could. “Just now, I was just asking about Cecily’s studies at school.”
His expression was indifferent, and his tone was casual, as if he was talking about a family affair, but also a little dissatisfied with me. “The school told me that Cecily caused quite a bit of trouble at school. Although they didn’t say exactly what happened, some rumors have already reached my ears.”
Noble’s gaze turned cold and his eyes seemed to have a hidden meaning.. He stared at me and said, “Cecily, I hope that there are some things that you can take note of. Don’t cause any trouble for me or this family!”
With that, he rose from his chair and walked past Adeline toward the door that led out of the basement.
He seemed very impatient with me, and very afraid that I would bring him trouble.
After Noble left, Adeline and I were the only ones left in the basement. The silence was eerie.
Adeline stopped smiling and narrowed her eyes. Her tone became sharp and unkind. “A country bumpkin like you really doesn’t know what’s good. You really don’t know your place. How could you cause trouble in school right after school started?”
I wasn’t about to respond to this lame taunt. I walked past her in silence, intending to head straight back to my room.
My attitude of disregard successfully angered Adeline. She stopped me and glared at me angrily. “Wild girl, listen carefully. If you anger a vampire of noble status, you will die a cheap life. However, if you implicate this family, even death cannot redeem your sins!”
She paused for a moment, as if she couldn’t take it anymore. Then she added, “Don’t even think about showing me a bad face in this house. Do you really think I can’t do anything to you? Just you wait!”
She snorted and left the basement.
After spending so much time in Rockefeller, I had no respect for Adeline’s snide remarks. This was nothing more than a game of hopscotch to me.
How was she going to make things difficult for me in this house? I had been through all kinds of diificult situations in school, so I didn’t care about her little tricks.
When I walked out of the basement, the servant who had been waiting in the hall saw me and immediately walked to me with a tray.
“Miss Cecily, this is the dinner Madam prepared for you. Please finish it all.”
“…” I raised my eyebrows and glanced at the food on my plate. I gently stirred the thick soup in my bowl with the spoon. The next second, a sour stench hit me.
It was obvious that she had given me some leftover food.
The servant saw that my expression wasn’t friendly and that I didn’t seem to have any intention of taking the tray, so he spoke again. “Miss Cecily, this is Madam’s order. You must finish it. It cannot be wasted.”
I looked up at the servant coldly and threw down the spoon. “Since you like it so much, you can eat it yourself.”
“I’m not eating. This is specially prepared for you.” The servant followed closely behind.
“I wouldn’t eat anything that not even you eat. Who do you think you are? I don’t even give a shit about Adeline, let alone you.” I turned back to the servant, my tone hard and intimidating.
Grandpa told me that I had to be tougher than those people who bullied the weak and feared the strong.
Indeed, the servant was frightened by the contempt and threat in my eyes and unconsciously took a step back.
Expressionlessly, I pushed the tray away from her and continued up the stairs to my room in the attic.
Actually, the conditions of this room were much worse than mine in Rockefeller. It was just barely big enough for me to fit in. I could barely survive two days at home on weekends.
However, I didn’t expect that the moment I pushed the door open, I would see such a scene inside. I immediately stopped outside the door.
The attic’s skylight had been opened. Apparently it had rained during the days I’d been away. The sheets and pillows were soaked, the floor was wet, and the desk was a mess. The whole room looked like a scene from a disaster that had been ravaged by a storm. It was a horrible sight.
The sight before me gave me a headache. I’d still underestimated Adeline’s abhorrence. She’d really used every trick she could think of to make my life easier.
Last week, before I left, I clearly remembered that I had closed the skylight because I knew that it was going to be a rainy season soon and that there would be heavy rain at any time. Before I went to school, I checked it repeatedly, but it turned out to be the same result.
It could only be that Adeline had asked someone to open the skylight.
I stood on the wet floor and felt a chill run down my spine.
This family seemed worse than Rockefeller. Adeline might be worse than a vampire to me.
