VFOTWN Ch.1
On the day she’ll become the wife of a handsome and capable man, she received envious and jealous gazes from many noble girls.
Wearing a white dress with a wedding tiara over her short black hair, she looks like the happiest bride…but that’s a lie.
She walked towards the altar, barely holding her husband’s arm, who was hiding a knife in his sleeve.
So, she will become the wife of a man who threatened her to cut her head if she ran away. The appearance of Duke Sikar, who would become her husband, was better than she expected. He smiled brightly at the people, and then closed his lips as if he was doing ventriloquism.
(N:ventriloquism – the ability to speak without moving your lips so that your voice seems to be coming from someone or something else, usually as a way of entertaining people)
“Could you take care of your facial expressions?”
“Let’s take care of our facial expressions, why don’t you put the knife away and we can talk?”
“That would be difficult. Because this is the only way to catch the bride who is only looking for a chance to run away.”
He’s a villainous husband who often threatens to kill me, but I don’t think I’m going to run away. Moreover, no matter how this marriage contract was, the wife of a villain who was swept away by the whirlwind of history would die a tragic death. It felt like a bomb thrown into my future.
*****
It has been a while since I came to this world. I was working as a nursery school teacher, and that day, I watched the children when they were going home. Accidents in the school zone happen frequently, then I could see the traffic violator’s car running towards the child.
Even though I was scared, with the determination to protect the child, I instinctively jumped into the road to saved the child. And when I opened my eyes, I was here.
I suddenly fell into this novel with no connection whatsoever, and I woke up in a back alley around the square. I’m not a supporting role in the novel or an extra either. It’s just like an ordinary human entered this world by falling from the sky.
The man who is now my husband, Duke Sikar, was a villain who met his tragic death near the end of the novel. While reading the novel, I felt sad when I found out that he had died.
I just sympathized with the villain’s last words, thinking about the time he laughed so coolly.
So, how did I get here? I came into this world with nothing. In short, I was a beggar who had no money. It was winter, so I was shivering with cold, and as I wandered through the streets like a homeless person, I saw people gathered in the square and they were screaming loudly.
“Put down the tyrant king!”
“Kill the king!”
Even though it was the first language I had heard, it felt strange being able to understand what everyone was saying, so I walked over to where the people were gathering. On the central platform of the square, a man who was stoned by people and bleeding here and there, sat on a chair and was tied with a rope. Then a man with fine uniform walked in front of him. The man wielded a long and sharp sword.
“It’s Duke Sikar Blake!!”
“Duke Sikar Blake! Please punish the king who ruined the kingdom!!”
The moment I heard that name, I could be sure that this place was in the novel I was reading before.
Duke Sikar Blake was a villain who expelled the current king and appointed a new king, and he was a terrifying figure with the ability to read people’s memories just by touching that person.
Looking back, it seems like today was the day the king was executed. If so, now is the time for the novel to begin.
At that moment, I remembered that there was an empty house where I could stay for a while. Because the weather was very cold and I was hungry, I almost fell, then I walked towards Mount Hill which was a bit far from the city.
Mount Hill is a small village near Duke Sikar Blake’s estate where there is a small farmhouse, and the house will be used by the main protagonist to live temporarily.
The house was originally an empty house without an owner because it was prepared as a house for the main protagonist in the novel when he was young.
There’s no safer place than this to stay for a while.
Inside the house, there’s enough food and firewood, as if prepared for the main protagonist, and it’s quite surprising that all the food in the kitchen is fresh as if it had just been bought.
‘After all, this is a house for the main protagonist, so it must be preserved in a fresh state.’
I was very hungry, but I couldn’t stand the cold anymore and started making firewood in the fireplace. I sat in front of the fireplace until I was warm and no longer shivering because of the cold.
After a little bit of warmth returned, I was starting to feel extremely hungry. Feeling a little sorry for eating the food, I muttered quietly as if asking the protagonist for permission before drinking the milk on the kitchen shelf.
“I’ll eat a little.”
There was only about a week left for the main protagonist to come, so in the meantime, I had to look for a monastery where this body could live.
The monastery that exists in this world, I could get food and I could sleep there, so that’s the only place I can go right now.
When I found a well in front of the house to pump water, suddenly an old lady rushed towards me.
“Sister! Sister!”
As soon as the old lady saw me, she called me sister and ran towards me.
It was very embarrassing at first, but I couldn’t just ignore it because she reminds me of my grandmother, who died because of dementia.
It’s a bit scary being alone in this poor security, so I brought the old lady to the main character’s house after much deliberation.
Anyway, when I moved to the monastery, I had to take this old lady with me.
When I brought this old lady into the house, first of all, I changed her tattered clothes and brought her some food. Of course, I had to leave some foodstuffs for the main protagonist so he could eat. I only had enough to eat with this old granny so we wouldn’t starve. I can’t completely satisfy my hunger with this kind of portioned food, but I couldn’t use the leftover ingredients.
‘I’m hungry.’
In my experience, it’s best to sleep when you’re hungry. After a meal, I fell asleep with this old granny as soon as possible.
How long have I been asleep? While I was sleeping, the soldiers suddenly came to me. Before I could even beg for my life, the soldiers covered my mouth and my eyes. I was dragged away by the soldiers without knowing where they were going to take me.
*****
I trembling in fear, not knowing where I was being dragged, in the silent carriage, where only the creaking of the wheels could be heard. It’s not because I’m too beautiful that they kidnapped me, did they take me because I’m a stranger with a strange appearance? Even if you kidnap someone, you usually ask the stranger’s identity, and you’ll tell the person why he was kidnapped, but that’s most likely not the case.
Then why…?
Are they the kind of group that wants to sell me as a maid because I seem to have good abilities? Biting my lip in fear, no matter how hard I tried to understand the current situation, there was nothing I could conclude. After riding the carriage for a while, the sound of a heavy iron gate opening, as if they had arrived somewhere, as well as the sound of a crowd people. Then, people dragged me off the carriage and seemed to hand me over to someone. I was dragged back and seated on a chair.
‘Isn’t it supposed to be a torture chair or something?’
Given this situation, I had endless, ominous thoughts. The cold and hard one seemed to fit the torture chair. As I tried to untie the knot in my mouth, I heard a creaking sound.
At that moment, I felt someone put his hand on my face, and I tried to avoid his grip to save my life. Then a hand grabbed the hood and untied it from above my head. I couldn’t open my eyes well because of the bright light, so I had to blink a few times. As my blurred vision disappeared and things started to become clearer, what suddenly appeared before my eyes wasn’t a tools for torture, but like a party being held.
“You took care of my grandmother.”
Across from where I was sitting, a man with his arms crossed and his head raised arrogantly, stared at me. Taking a closer look at the man’s face, he was so handsome that I felt like I was suffocating. After staring at him for a while, I remembered where I had seen this man before.
‘Okay! It’s the man I saw in the square!’
So this man was Duke Sikar Blake that I saw in the square. It was only then that I remember the contents of the novel and seemed to be able to guess the old lady’s identity. In the novel, Duke Sikar’s grandmother, who suffers from dementia, wanders outside and was captured by bad people and loses all her belongings. Since his grandmother was his only family, Duke Sikar, who was already half mad, started to get even crazier after that day. In short, the death of his grandmother became the setting for Duke Sikar’s darkening.
(N:Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia.)
‘The old lady that I took care of for a while was the grandmother of the villain in this novel!’
I remembered that he cut the king’s neck with a guillotine during the day, and I felt my throat stiffen. He looked very calm and gentle on the outside, but I could tell that he was also crazy. Duke Sikar looked into my eyes, brushing my disheveled hair that fell on top of my forehead. When our eyes met, I felt like he was reading a memory even though he was just staring at me. To that extent, Duke Sikar’s eyes stared intently, as if piercing the inside of that person.
“Black hair and black eyes…You have a mysterious appearance that I’ve never seen anywhere else. The clothes are also weird.
In any case, the reward for taking good care of my grandmother won’t let you feel disappointed, but if you need anything more, let me know.”
So, I think he would give me money. Basically, there’s a saying about rowing when the water comes in. If not now, when will I get an opportunity like this again? I was in a state of extreme hunger to shake my humble humility.
“I didn’t ask for a reward, but I would appreciate it if you give me whatever I want.”
What I meant was that anything was possible. Once you get everything you ask of them, you will be able to live in this world in peace. Duke Sikar wasn’t someone who was humble at all, maybe because of his personality that didn’t realize humility, and he had a face that didn’t care if I asked for whatever I wanted.
“I make sure to compensate you without any lacks.”
Despite his frightening temperament, Duke Sikar has quite a good personality and gave me enough rewards to survive for several years. After saying thank you to the point that my tounge was worn out, I took the rewards he gave me and climbed into the carriage to exit the duke’s residence. Then, suddenly, his grandmother got into the carriage, grabbed my hand and lay on my lap.
“Sister! Where’s sister!? Don’t go!”
It was frustrating. No, I was afraid.
Really, why are you here? His grandmother’s actions quite surprised me.
His grandmother stopped me from leaving and she burst into tears, but I was the one who really wanted to cry.
“Grandma, you can’t do this… I have to go. You don’t want me to be killed by your grandson, do you?”
‘I don’t know what will happen if I stay here any longer and my memory gets known to Duke Sikar!’
Isn’t this a novel? I mean, he’s a madman who could kill me. However, when his grandmother cried and screamed, I couldn’t leave the duke’s house. I tried to gently refuse, but in the end I was pulled out of the carriage.
‘Is it okay to treat the benefactor like this?!’
I was again led by the soldiers into the duke’s mansion. The soldiers seated me on a chair right in front of the table where Duke Sikar was sitting. He lowered his gaze and looked at me.
“If you stay here as my grandmother’s companion, I will give you enough wealth to eat and play with kindness for the rest of your life. What do you think about doing business with me?”
You see, when you make a deal, you don’t usually point a sword at someone’s neck, right?
