Chapter 2: Very Biased Mother

Her mother had thought of Meng Yan when she believed that the Jiang family was great. Now that she realized that the Jiang family was not so good, she wanted Gu Xiang to marry into the family instead.
Since they were both her biological daughters, her mother was being too biased!
Li Jiayin continued to speak. “The Jiang family is very well to do. Your Uncle Meng really dotes on you so he found you such a good date. A man like this is hard to come by!”
“I’m not going.”
When Li Jiayin saw her daughter acting like this, she was displeased. “Gu Xiang, what do you mean? Don’t go overboard. I’m speaking to you nicely but look at your attitude. You’re always outside and haven’t even brought a boyfriend back home. Now that I’m introducing a date to you, you’re giving me attitude? Why do you have such an odd personality like your father? You’re really angering me!”
Whenever Li Jiayin was unhappy she would complain about Gu Xiang’s father. Gu Xiang’s father had not been a likable man. He was an alcoholic and loved to hit others. Li Jiayin divorced him because of this.
She married Uncle Meng later on. Uncle Meng was a nice man and Li Jiayin’s marriage with Gu Xiang’s father became her dark past. Whenever she was reminded of it, she would get very upset to the extent that she even considered Gu Xiang the God of Plagues.
When Gu Xiang arrived at the Mengs’ place years ago, she had hoped that her mother would dote on her just as she did when she was young. However, she realized later on that no matter what she did, how obedient she was, or how great her results were, she would never amount to Meng Yan in her mother’s heart.
Fortunately, she got used to it after all these years. As long as she was not hopeful, she could avoid disappointment. Therefore, she did not care about anything that Li Jiayin said.
She said to her mother, “Since the Jiang family is so well to do, let Meng Yan marry into the family. I’m not Uncle Meng’s daughter, anyway. If I marry into the family, they would despise me too.”
“Letting you marry him is for your own good. What an ungrateful wretch.”
Gu Xiang chuckled. “That’s right. I’m ungrateful but isn’t that attributed to your poor teaching?”
She really had no idea how Li Jiayin could say that it was for her own good.
When Li Jiayin heard Gu Xiang’s words, she was incensed. “You only know how to infuriate me. It’s my mistake for bringing you to this place! When your father passed away, who in the Gu family wanted to take care of you? All of them didn’t want you. If it weren’t for the Meng family, you would be on the street! Now that something has happened to the family, you won’t even help. What an ungrateful wretch.”
Gu Xiang stayed silent and thought about the past, ignoring Li Jiayin..
When her father just passed away, Gu Xiang’s relatives were supposed to take care of her. Her father had four younger sisters and one younger brother. However, although they appeared to be concerned about her, they all quarreled behind her back over whose family she would join.
After all, everyone already had their own children and nobody was willing to accept another burden. She felt like a piece of garbage. In the end it was Uncle Meng who volunteered to bring her home.
Although he had her own daughter, he did not dislike and avoid her. Whenever he bought anything for Meng Yan, he would buy one for her as well and treated her nicely. Although her biological mother was biased against her, Uncle Meng was nice to her.
Back then when the family was doing well, Uncle Meng would spend time with the family when he was free. Recently, he was returning home later and when she saw him last night, she noticed that his hair turned gray.
He was probably at his wits’ end. It explained why he wanted her to marry into the Jiang family.
