Chapter 3: Almost the Same Age as Her Father

Gu Xiang sat down on the sofa. “If you want me to help just say it. Don’t make it sound as though you’re doing it for my own good.”
Seeing her like this, Li Jiayin’s attitude softened as she said, “Fine, now that you’re older and your wings have grown fully I need to beg you to do something! Your Uncle Meng has agreed that you’ll be meeting them tomorrow. You wouldn’t want the Meng family to go bankrupt, right? If we’re bankrupt, we will be left with nothing! You had nothing when you lived with your father in the past and endured his temper. You should know that those kinds of days are not the best.”
Li Jiayin teared up as she spoke. Although she was in her forties, she teared up easily and Gu Xiang was often left speechless by it.
Gu Xiang could definitely relate to being poor. Although she was doing well now, she could not even afford her school fees back when she was living with her father. Listening to her mother bring the past up, she thought about her father too.
Li Jiayin’s cries annoyed her. “Stop crying!”
…
“I don’t care. I’m not marrying into the family. I heard that the old man Jiang brings misfortune to his wives. His previous fiancées all passed away because of him! Mom, aren’t you wishing for my death if you want me to marry him?”
In the afternoon, Gu Xiang stood in the elevator as she thought back on Meng Yan’s words. She agreed to it after Li Jiayin’s actions and words got into her head. Thinking back on Meng Yan’s words now, she wondered if the man surnamed Jiang would really bring misfortune to his wife.
The thought that Li Jiayin felt sorry for Meng Yan and made her come instead made her feel pathetic. The thought that Li Jiayin preferred Meng Yan over her made her feel pathetic. The woman did not even regard her as her own daughter.
At this moment, the phone rang and it was a call from Li Jiayin. Gu Xiang shot a glance at it but did not pick it up. Leaving the elevator, she arrived at the entrance of the café which they were meeting at.
Pushing the door of the café, she entered. A middle-aged man was sitting there. He looked like he was in his forties. When she saw him, Gu Xiang was slightly taken aback.
It couldn’t be?
Although she knew that people who required matchmaking were not the most appealing, he was almost the same age as Uncle Meng. She was looking for a husband. She could not possibly bring a father home!
“Ms. Gu Xiang?” The man looked at her. He was especially polite.
Gu Xiang responded, “That’s me.”
When he saw Gu Xiang, the man smiled. “I’d heard that Ms. Gu looked just like Mrs. Meng in the past. Now that I’ve seen you, both of you really are beautiful.”
Gu Xiang was sick and tired of listening to these words. She knew that it was just the man’s civilities. “Thanks, you look handsome too.”
When the man heard her words, he quickly laughed and explained, “Ms. Gu, you’re mistaken. My surname is Du. I’m the Jiang family’s butler. You can address me as Old Du. Mr. Jiang has something on today so I’m here on his behalf.”
“Oh, that’s the case.” Gu Xiang took a sip of water and felt relieved.
When speaking about Mr. Jiang, Old Du spoke as though he were talking about his son. “He takes his work too seriously and puts all his effort into it so it’s worrying us. However, you can be rest assured that our Mr. Jiang is an outstanding man. He is good-looking and has a great personality. He’ll definitely be a good partner when you guys get married.”
Hearing his words, Gu Xiang could not hold her laughter in.
“Ms. Gu, what are you laughing about?”
