Gu Yang shook her head. “No.”
“That’s good.” Ji Minghui sighed in relief and began counting on his fingers. “Look at you—studying physics, and also involved with our Psychology Society and the Society of Mental Disorders.”
“Qu Mo and the Sound Association are still eyeing you. If more people join in, there won’t be enough time for everyone. We’ll have to share the spotlight.”
Gu Yang felt a mix of amusement and frustration, noting that Master Duan Shui’s business seemed to be expanding.
Knowing Ji Minghui had more to do, she declined his offer to accompany her downstairs.
The capital’s psychiatric hospital was large, but she was familiar with it from frequent visits. It was also conveniently close to Hua University and had excellent security.
Nearby, there was a food street with vendors selling candied hawthorns. Seeing a few left, Gu Yang bought them to bring to Big Shot Sister and Little Blood Bank.
As she finished paying and began packing the candied hawthorns into her bag, a familiar voice interrupted.
“I want candied hawthorn too.”
Gu Yang turned sharply and saw Ning Shen standing behind her. Given Feng Jue and Gu Jin’s warnings about Ning Shen’s erratic behavior, she was immediately on guard and took a step to the side.
However, Ning Shen’s gaze remained fixed on her, or more precisely, on the candied hawthorn in her hand.
“I want one too,” he said insistently.
Gu Yang, both wary and exasperated, replied, “If you don’t want to buy it, why are you staring at me?”
“As the leader of the Ning family, surely you can afford a candied hawthorn?” she added, noting the inconspicuous mechanical watch on his wrist worth over 40 million.
He responded, his tone flat, “I don’t have money.”
Gu Yang fell silent, taken aback. Ning Shen’s deep, determined eyes were fixed on the candied hawthorn. “I want it.”
His tone was like that of a child who wouldn’t be deterred until he got his way.
As a psychiatrist, Gu Yang was attuned to subtle emotional cues and sensed that Ning Shen was serious. He was markedly different from the Ning Shen she had previously encountered.
Gu Yang had her suspicions but chose not to voice them. Instead, she held out a candied hawthorn and smiled. “Do you want it?”
Ning Shen’s eyes locked onto the bright red treat as he nodded.
Gu Yang felt a peculiar sense of déjà vu, as if she were walking a dog with a bone. She shook off the odd feeling and said to Ning Shen, “You can’t just take something without asking. You need to ask first.”
Ning Shen considered this for a moment and, finding it reasonable, called out, “Sister.”
Gu Yang was stunned.
Weren’t they at odds the last time they met? Now, Ning Shen was calling her “sister”?
More baffling was that Ning Shen was even older than her brother, Xiao Yize. How dare he address her as such?
Despite her surprise, Gu Yang realized that Ning Shen didn’t recognize her. His behavior seemed more juvenile, akin to a child’s.
The person before her bore a striking resemblance to Ning Shen, but his demeanor was vastly different.
This suggested two possibilities: This person could be Ning Shen’s twin with a mental disability, resulting in a younger mental state. He might be an alternate personality of Ning Shen, indicative of dissociative identity disorder.
Gu Yang leaned toward the latter explanation.
