“Hey! What are you saying? Who’s the one that finished all the snacks? You were clearly the one who had arrived first and finished them! I didn’t even get a lick!” The spectacled man’s eyes widened. He honestly hadn’t expected Li Teng to distort the truth like that.
“Lies come so naturally to you, don’t they! Forget it, there’s no point in arguing with haters like you,” replied Li Teng with a shake of his head.
“What the f*ck! Is there even justice in this world? Just who’s the one that’s lying here?!” The spectacled man was so furious that his head hurt.
“Bro, don’t sink to that hater’s level. With his level of class, I can’t even be bothered to give him the time of the day,” said Gao Fei in consolation.
“Who are you calling a person of no class? Huh?!” The spectacled man became even more furious upon hearing what Gao Fei said.
“Did I say that you have no class? You’re the one that added the word no in front of class. But you sure have a high level of self-awareness,” countered Gao Fei.
“Ignore him. The more attention you give him, the more he gets into it,” said Li Teng, acting as a mediator.
“Yeah, I’ll do that. It’ll look as if we’re at the same level of class as him if I respond,” replied Gao Fei with a nod.
“People like you, I… I…” The spectacled man looked up at the sky, about to go crazy from rage.
The spectacled man walked over to the crew members and said, “The two of you must have seen it just now, right? Who’s the one that ate all the snacks? Can’t you say something in fairness?”
The crew members looked at him, expressionless and silent.
“Come on, say something!” The spectacled man felt rather helpless.
However, they continued to ignore him and turned around to enter the cafe instead.
“Damn!” he swore, reckoning that he couldn’t count on them anymore. When the spectacled man thought about how he definitely wouldn’t be able to gain the upper hand alone against Gao Fei and Li Teng, he decided to get a cup of free coffee to calm himself down instead.
At this point, the white-collar woman and the teenage girl walked over from the corner and sat at the table.
Gao Fei gave them a cashew nut each.
“There are actually snacks today?” asked the white-collar woman as she glanced at the table’s empty plates.
“We’re too late. They’ve all been eaten by that spectacled fella. A few cashew nuts are all we managed to snatch,” replied Gao Fei as he gestured at the spectacled man beside the coffee machine.
“Yeah, he was afraid that we would get some, so he hurriedly stuffed them in heaps into his mouth when he saw us coming. Look at how he choked so hard that he had to down a few glasses of water,” added Li Teng as he directed a contemptuous look at the spectacled man.
“It’s just a few plates of snacks. Did he really need to do that?” remarked the girl with a shake of her head.
“He’s too much. Leave some for us, at least,” grumbled the white-collar woman.
“Hey, what are you saying?! Huh?! Excuse me, but all of you were clearly the ones that finished the snacks! What’s the point of blaming me?!” snapped the spectacled man. He had been in the midst of dispensing coffee when he heard the comments behind him. He was so furious that he was shaking all over.
“Forget it, don’t sink to that hater’s level. He’s not worth it,” said Li Teng to the others.
“Yes, he isn’t! He can eat it all! And choke to death!” said the teenage girl in agreement.
“What the f*ck! I’ve really learned something new today! Some people are really top-notch at distorting the truth! And the key is that there are actually people who believe him!”
With a cup of coffee in his hand, the spectacled man sat with his back to the table and fumed in silence as he stared at the streets in the distance.
The crew members who had entered the cafe just now walked out with a tray with three plates of snacks on it at this point. It was hard to tell whether it was because they had noticed that more people had arrived or because the spectacled man’s protest had worked, but the film crew was actually providing the extras with another portion of snacks.
The spectacled man was taking in the coffee’s aroma in his hand and had his back to the table. Thus, he didn’t notice that the crew members had come over. Gao Fei gestured at the others to be quiet. Then, he swiftly split the three plates of snacks into four portions, placed them in four empty plates, and distributed one to each of them.
Apart from the coffee aroma, the spectacled man seemed to detect some other smell in the air. It seemed like… the aroma of French fries?
When he turned around, he saw everyone eating from their own plate of snacks, while only two empty plates remained on the table.
“Hey! Why don’t I get a share?” The spectacled man’s eyes widened.
“You have the cheek to ask for more when you’ve already eaten three plates’ worth of snacks by yourself just now? How can you be so greedy?” scoffed the girl as she gave him an eye-roll and munched on her fries.
He protested, “Little sister, I really didn’t eat any! They were the ones that ate them all!” He was on the brink of tears.
“What a good-for-nothing. Just a mere bit of food has made you shown your true colors? Do you really have to?” chastised the white-collar woman as she ate a cookie.
The spectacled man tried to defend himself again. He replied, “That’s not true… The thing is, I’m hungry! I didn’t even dare to spend that many points on food when I came here. Who doesn’t like free stuff? And I didn’t even eat any j—”
Li Teng interrupted him, “Alright, alright! Here, have a biscuit! One must be kind and honest in life.” Then, he reached over and gave him a cookie.
“You—” The spectacled man glared at Li Teng. All of a sudden, he realized just how scary a matter it was to have offended Li Teng.
Guo Zhipeng’s evaluation of his character had been on the mark. This was a scheming guy with first-rate acting skills! He wasn’t someone whom he could afford to offend at all!
Take the current situation, for example. He had said that he was sharing a cookie with him, but what was he holding it so tightly for? All five of his fingers were guarding the cookie. Was he supposed to fish it out with his own fingers? It would crumble to bits in his hand if he did that!
“What are you giving that to him for? He had already eaten so much just now!” said Gao Fei as he reached his arm out and stopped Li Teng.
The white-collar woman stopped him too. “Exactly. You’re too kind. People like him don’t deserve any sympathy.”
“Big brother, you’d better just leave it for yourself. You don’t have that many points, so you must still be hungry. To think you’re still so considerate to others at this point,” said the teenage girl too.
“Alright, I’ll eat it then, since he doesn’t want it,” said Li Teng. Then, he withdrew the cookie and stuffed it into his mouth.
The spectacled man was so mad that he couldn’t stop eye-rolling. He knew that Li Teng was playing him for a fool and didn’t intend to give him the cookie at all. People like him were too insidious! He could even cook up a scheme like this with just a few plates of snacks, what more with other matters?
No wonder he could launch a counterattack like that on Guo Zhipeng the other time and kill him successfully.
He’d better stay far, far away from him in the future. Otherwise, he’d surely end up miserable.
…
“Alright, all extras involved in the production have arrived. Don’t wander about any more, everyone. When the three high-level actors arrive five minutes later, we’ll start the briefing about today’s script,” announced the female director, who was wearing a metal mask on her face, after she came over to the table and did a headcount.
“Have all the extras arrived? What about that granny who was sitting beside me the other time?” asked the teenage girl, somewhat puzzled by the director.
“She wasn’t in good health due to old age and was even exposed to a few consecutive days of extremely hot weather at her place, so she hadn’t survived. Her corpse has been transported to the film studio,” replied the director emotionlessly.
“She’s dead?!” The white-collar woman’s eyes widened in shock.
Li Teng was greatly taken aback, too. The old lady had looked like a woman of cultivation and had seemed well-educated and knowledgeable, so he had had a pretty favorable impression of her. Little did he think that she would die just like that!
It was no wonder that this had happened, however.
Even a man of a sturdy build like Li Teng had been on the brink of death quite a few times on top of the stone pillar. The old lady was already in her 60s and rather advanced in age. How could she possibly endure that kind of dehydration and starvation on top of the stone pillar?
A death like that was honestly too tragic!
The white-collar woman covered her eyes and began to weep softly.
The teenage girl also burst into tears.
Both Li Teng and the spectacled man lowered their heads and kept quiet.
Everyone present at the table felt the old lady’s death acutely as if they were the ones that had died and mourned the death of their own kind.
“All of you are really a bunch of goddamn bastards!” Gao Fei swore as he got up and pointed at the director.
The two bodyguards beside the director stepped forward and blocked her from Gao Fei.
“Don’t be rash!” Li Teng hurriedly held Gao Fei back.
“Young lad, don’t be rash!” The old lady’s voice also reached them from afar.
Everyone looked toward the source of the voice. True enough, the old lady had appeared at the roadside.
“Granny, are you alright?!” Both the teenage girl and the white-collar woman rushed over to her and supported her at each side.
“I’m fine. It’s just that I have to go to the Waxwork Museum later, so I’m here to bid farewell to everyone,” replied the old lady with a self-mocking smile. After her corpse was transported to the film studio, she had been placed into the treatment chamber and revived.
She had escaped death, but she couldn’t escape the fate of becoming a wax statue.
