Chapter 37: Taking Responsibility For Your Own Actions

After Mrs. Guo alighted the bus with Li Teng and left the bus, the ghost’s restrictions would be lifted. Everyone could easily imagine what would happen after that.
“Stop day-dreaming. I’ll never tell you!” Gao Fei shook his head firmly and resolutely.
“Oh? You’d better consider this carefully. There’s a 50% likelihood that you’ll be killed if you refuse to tell me. You must know that I don’t have anything against you, but if I can’t find him at that point, you’ll become the only one I can kill in order to fulfill the plot,” said Mrs. Guo as a threat to Gao Fei.
“Suit yourself.” Gao Fei had an awe-inspiring expression of someone helping a friend at the loss of his own life.
Li Teng had pushed him away at a critical moment and saved his life the last time. He would be going against his conscience if he didn’t do even this favor for him.
The pretty boy at the side also threatened him, “Young lad, there’s not much point in you keeping it a secret. She needs only to alight at the first stop, and that will be enough. If you’re at the first stop while he’s at the third stop, she can just run to the third stop and wait over there. Ghosts can travel very quickly. She can still kill him in this way, just that it’s more time-consuming. But if you offend us because of this, you’ll probably have a very hard time in future productions!”
“So what even if I offend all of you? It’s just the fate of being turned into a wax statue, isn’t it? You can’t scare me with that!” replied Gao Fei. He hadn’t even the slightest intention to give in.
He knew that he was pretty much having a death wish, but there was a likelihood that Mrs. Guo didn’t have the intention to kill anyone else other than Li Teng. However, Li Teng would have a chance of survival if he made use of this opportunity! As long as Mrs. Guo couldn’t find him within an hour, she would be the one turned into a wax statue instead!
This was Li Teng’s only chance of a counterattack!
Li Teng clapped his bamboo sticks down on the table with a loud smack to everyone’s surprise. “My role is the set lighting technician, and I’m alighting at the first stop.”
True enough, the words, You’re the set lighting technician, were written on one of the sticks, while the words, Alight at the first stop, were written on the other.
“Don’t! Are you out of your mind? Why are you telling her?! Just let her take the gamble of a 50% probability!” exclaimed Gao Fei as he hurriedly reached over and covered Li Teng’s bamboo sticks with his hands. However, the others had already seen the words on them.
“I’ll take responsibility for my own actions and resolve the trouble that I’ve created. Every act of injustice has its own cause, and every debt has its own debtor. I’m the one that deserves to die. It’s not my style to implicate my friends,” replied Li Teng with a calm expression, seemingly very confident in himself.
Not expecting Li Teng to reveal his lots by his own initiative, Mrs. Guo burst into loud, cackling laughter. “Hahaha! At least you know what’s good for you! There’s no point in the two of you hiding it, anyway!”
“Such fakers! Who are you trying to move with your pretense of high morality?” grumbled the spectacled man in a low voice.
Gao Fei cursed at him upon hearing his mumbling, “You’ll definitely die a goddamn terrible death!”
“Whether or not I’ll die a terrible death is still a mystery, but someone’s definitely gonna die in this scene, haha.” The spectacled man went on gleefully.
The woman in the sunglasses, the white-collar woman, and the teenage girl gave Li Teng sympathetic looks.
They couldn’t help but bemoan that Li Teng simply had terrible luck.
He had run into Guo Zhipeng, whom he had a feud with in real life, in his first scene after entering the film studio. By relying on the bar chair, he had survived by a fluke.
But now, yet another incident with a minuscule probability of happening had taken place in his second scene—Guo Zhipeng’s mother had found her way here!
There was absolutely no way to explain this other than it being a deliberate set-up against Li Teng by someone behind the scenes.
Alright, so she was seeking revenge. So be it, right? Yet Mrs. Guo had to draw the one and only ghost lot—one that had the fates of others in its hands—right in the beginning.
Then, she even forced her way through and got to know which stop Li Teng would be alighting at.
This was undoubtedly a sure-kill!
Li Teng had absolutely no chance of making a comeback this time.
“Time’s up. What’s your decision?” asked the director after she checked the time.
“The first stop, of course,” answered Mrs. Guo.
“Are you sure? If you choose to alight with me at the first stop, you’ll be dead for sure!” Li Teng threatened her instead.
Mrs. Guo burst into laughter.
“Are you sure?” asked the director again.
Li Teng quickly interrupted again, “You only have one chance, you know! You’d better reply only after careful consideration! Don’t regret later on if you make a bad decision!”
Mrs. Guo scoffed. “Thinking of messing up the state of my mind with just a few silly tricks?” Then, to the director, she answered very resolutely, “I choose the first stop!”
“Alright, next.” The director gestured to the woman in the sunglasses.
She was quiet for a while before she made her decision. “The third stop, I guess.”
There was no longer any meaning to their choices at this point.
Li Teng had “stepped forward bravely” once more and taken on the box lunch-claiming opportunity upon himself for them.
The last time, Li Teng had successfully counterattacked and killed Guo Zhipeng with a bar chair’s help.
This time round, it didn’t seem like he had any chance of retaliation, no matter how they looked at it.
The only thing he could do was resign himself to his death helplessly.
All of a sudden, something occurred to the pretty boy. He said, “There’s a loophole if you choose the first stop!”
Mrs. Guo’s expression changed drastically. “Loophole? Are you afraid that the two of them would exchange their lots?”
It looked like the same possibility had suddenly occurred to her, too.
The pretty boy had a look of great regret on his face as he replied, “Highly likely. The two of them just need to exchange their lots under the table and deceive you into alighting at the first stop, while he alights at the third stop. If you can’t outrun the bus, whereas he escapes at top speed after he alights, he’ll be safe as long as he can last an hour! These two little knaves are too crafty!”
“Why didn’t you bring it up earlier?!” Mrs. Guo’s brows also drew together tightly.
“It has only just occurred to me, too!” replied the pretty boy as he smacked his forehead. Evidently, both of them had overlooked this extremely important aspect!
And it was precisely this that had given Li Teng an opening, as well as a shot at survival!
Mrs. Guo only had an hour, whereas the film studio was so big. Once he went into hiding, if Mrs. Guo couldn’t find him within an hour, she would really be killed by his counterattack!
On the other hand, upon hearing their conversation, Gao Fei was full of regrets instead.
Why hadn’t he thought of that? If he had, Li Teng might have had a chance of survival if they had exchanged their lots under the table just now.
The thing was, he hadn’t thought of that at all!
To think that this idea hadn’t occurred to someone as clever as Li Teng, either.
What a terrible situation it was now. Mrs. Guo had already decided to alight with Li Teng at the first stop. It was too late for them to save the situation.
Gao Fei sighed and looked over at Li Teng.
Surprisingly, Li Teng had a neutral expression on his face. He was still drinking his free coffee leisurely.
These might just be the last few cups of coffee in his life, after all.
