Chapter 39: What Is This That You’ve Written!
Wang Lili was ecstatic at the first sight of the paper.
The world was indeed small!
Could it be someone of the same name? The name Zhang Yuan was rather popular. There were at least ten thousand people with the same name!
‘It shouldn’t be someone with the same name. I recall having heard that he was writing a thesis on kinematics…’
‘Haha! This troublemaker has unexpectedly fallen into my hands!’
Wang Lili immediately got excited the more she thought about it. When she recalled how her IQ had been greatly insulted in the afternoon and that she had no way to take revenge, she felt stifled deep down.
‘You troublemaker, how good can a paper you wrote be? I will definitely criticize your paper until it’s worthless and let my boss give you a good scolding!’
When she thought of that, she hastily said to her boyfriend, “Sorry, I have something going on. I’ll be leaving now.”
“Huh? Why!” This pitiful boy had finally managed to ask his girlfriend out after much effort and was preparing to commit some naughty deeds. But the world had blocked him again.
“My teacher gave me a task to do, I can’t help it. I’ll be going back to read through the thesis,” Wang Lili said.
Even though such an incident happened again, Wang Lili’s boyfriend could not possibly complain about it either…
“Then I’ll ask you out tomorrow again…”
“Okay, I’ll see if I’m available tomorrow.”
Just like that, Wang Lili abandoned her boyfriend and excitedly devoted herself to the ‘revolutionary cause’ of reading through the thesis paper.
…
Two hours later, she sat before her computer and stared blankly at the screen.
“The writing is really wordy. Is he deliberately typing nonsense to increase the word count?”
“Oh, this point is rather solid and practical.”
‘Eh? What’s this?’
‘Erm… let me think about it.’
‘Maybe I would have to browse through some other papers.’
Gradually, her face turned red.
She felt a mysterious feeling of giddiness. The dense text was like a heavenly script, and at the end of the paper, she had no idea what it was talking about.
‘Wait, let me try again!’
‘Urgh, I still can’t understand…’
‘Wait, let me try again!’
Wang Lili felt that her train of thoughts was being blocked. She found it suffocating.
‘Urgh, I’m so angry! I don’t understand the contents!’
…
After Zhang Yuan and Han Ziyue finished their dinner, they took a walk at the pedestrian street near the school. They did not buy anything along the way.
Following then, they avoided the dormitory aunt’s line of sight and arrived at Han Ziyue’s room to ‘repair her computer’.
The computer was still working fine, but the computer had slowed down due to the aging parts.
For this type of ‘worldly’ problem, Zhang Yuan obviously had no way to solve it. He only acted like an expert and opened the computer, cleared the dust, and removed a pile of junk software.
He was surrounded and spectated at the same time. All sorts of incoming weird questions made Zhang Yuan feel uncomfortable.
He wouldn’t have come if he knew he would end up being spectated.
“He seems familiar, have I ever seen him somewhere?”
“He just appeared on the live broadcast earlier on.”
“Is he your new boyfriend?”
Han Ziyue said in response, “Nope, he’s my sister’s ex-boyfriend, an astronaut. He will be going up to space soon.”
“Haha, your relationship with him seems pretty strange.”
“Is it true that every astronaut can repair things? If a computer chip malfunctions, how can it be repaired? It is said that the spaceship would be flying for three thousand years.”
Zhang Yuan patiently explained, “The main chip used in the spaceship is the traditional military silicon-based chip with low frequency and is of micron size. The more simple a part is, the less likely it will break. Of course, the performance would be lacking but we brought tons of spare substitutes. In the event that it breaks, we can immediately replace it.”
“If the electronic gadgets we bring on board spoils, it cannot be repaired.”
“So that’s the case. That’s rather sad. You better pray that your phone doesn’t spoil!”
It was hard for people to imagine days without their phones.
While listening in on their conversation, Han Ziyue merely stood on the side and smiled with a slight blush on her face.
Zhang Yuan knew what that little lady was thinking.
Girls at her age were usually slightly vain, and now that he was a small celebrity, bringing him around the dormitory would definitely satisfy her vanity greatly.
These types of things were normal, as long as it was not too overboard.
In fact, he was also slightly vain. Who would not like being praised?
All in all, it was a very relaxing day since he did need to not use his brain. He had even enjoyed an eventful day where he was constantly surrounded by a halo of light.
After he returned to his room, Zhang Yuan could not help but feel a little guilty.
His current behavior was too depraved!
‘If Ye Kaifu was still here, I would definitely get ridiculed by him!’
He thought deep down. ‘In any case, I will never be a spare tire or an ass-kisser. Plus, I’ll be leaving for the spaceship in 5 days. Why would I be scared of a group of girls? Even if you ask me out tomorrow, I won’t leave and I’ll stay in my dorm to study.’
Yeap, that was what he would do.
After he read for some time, he was prepared to end the day.
He had a good habit of going to sleep before 12am every night and waking up at 7 am the next day.
“I wonder if Professor Wang has read through my paper.”
He closed his eyes groggily, and while he was sound asleep, his phone suddenly rang.
*Riiiiing!*
Zhang Yuan woke up with a start and answered the phone. When he checked the time, he angrily said, “Senior Wang Lili, what are you doing? Do you know it’s 2 a.m now… You’re also someone with a boyfriend, can you don’t disturb my sleep in the middle of the night?”
Wang Lili stuck out her tongue and asked in embarrassment. “Erm, I have a problem… Are there any reference books for geometric group theory and topology? Can you recommend some to me?”
She could not understand.
She really could not understand Zhang Yuan’s thesis paper.
She had studied group theory and topology in the past, but when both were added together and used on some profound knowledge, she could not understand it.
Group theory and topology were profound mathematics concepts. One might not be able to master them even if they studied them for their entire lives.
She had asked several of her good friends but the result was the same, none of them could understand the paper.
She also asked a few Ph.D. seniors but their understanding was within that range where they seemed to understand but did not fully understand at the same time. However, all of them mentioned that it was a very innovative thesis paper that needed to be studied carefully.
She could not even understand the paper so how was she supposed to edit it!
On the contrary, she might even be reprimanded by her teacher!
At the thought of her teacher’s frown, sigh, and looking at her like an idiot, Wang Lili was very anxious.
Therefore, she could only use this sort of roundabout method to ask for help, ‘I shall read whatever books you’ve read and I’ll be able to understand your paper that way.’
‘I’m such a genius to have thought of such a solution!’
‘I can never let this guy know I’m editing his paper. What’s more, I don’t understand the contents. Otherwise, I would definitely be ridiculed and trampled to the ground…’
But the very next second, Wang Lili revealed a deadpan expression.
She only heard Zhang Yuan saying, “Oh you wish to learn group theory and topology? These are two different concepts. In fact, there’s no complete textbook to introduce the relationship between them.”
“Then hurry up and explain it to me.”
Wang Lili nearly revealed her true intentions.
“Oh… the topological structure of a group is called a topological group. The main point of a topological group or also known as the topological space with a group structure, is that the group operations must be continuous. Inside the topological group, there’s an important subclass known as the Lie group and another important subclass called the Typical group (Matrix group). For example, you might have come into contact with GL(n), O(n), U(n) and etcetera in algebra. All these belong to that category…”
“If you wish to delve in deeper, I have five books to recommend you. The following documents can also be referred to…”
‘Five books? How long would I need to finish them all!? I need to hand this in tomorrow!’
Wang Lili nearly fainted.
