- Chapter 33 - What Kind Of Newbie Are You?! They Said That “Summoner” Is A Terrible Job, Yet They Call Her The Last Boss Chapter 33
It’s the first day after Golden Week.
Kei Aikawa, an office worker who had vacationed at her parents’ house and became fully refreshed, was facing her job with a new feeling. And then:
“Aikawa-san, the manager is calling you,” said a senior colleague of hers.
Wait, did I do something wrong? She thought without changing her expression
“Uwah, Aikawa-senpai is going to get yelled at. If you cry, we’ll comfort you,” the junior colleague beside her said.
Kei ignored them and went to their director’s desk. Kei has a reputation for being a cool woman in this company, but right now, she was nervous and stiff. Strange sweat runs down her back.
The director was a very strict person, and Kei was often scolded for making mistakes when she was a newcomer. She stands in front of a desk where a strong-looking man with thickly built muscles all over his body, someone that makes you want to ask, “Are you a righteous superhero or something?”
“Come in, Aikawa,” the Director said.
“Yes,” Kei said. “Is there something wrong with my work?”
“No, your work is perfect. There’s nothing to complain about. But, the thing is… it’s the end of Golden Week, but Aikawa, you’re the only one on our floor who hasn’t spent a single day off yet.”
Without changing her expression, Kei said with relief, “Ah, is that what it was all about? Geeze, I was so surprised!” she wanted to say.
“I want to praise you for being such a splendid worker, but times change,” the Director said. “That kind of thing doesn’t count for your evaluation. It’s a problem if you don’t use it for at least 5 days of vacation. Is there anything you want to do? Travel, hobbies, etc.?”
“No… nothing in particular,” Kei said. “I don’t particularly have anything else to do.”
“You don’t have to have any plans, you know? Relaxing at home is a fine holiday,” the Director said. “Well, you don’t have to use it right now. Just think about it.”
“Yes… please excuse me,” Kei said before she returned to her desk.
“Paid vacation…?” Kei muttered.
Kei is not good at resting when others are working. That’s why she only uses her days off when she catches a cold.
(Even if I use it, there’s nothing to do… Well, let’s think about it later.)
Kei stopped thinking there. When she returned to the desk, her junior was answering the phone with teary eyes. By the time Kei sat down, knowing that this would lead to trouble again, the words “Paid Vacation” disappeared from Kei’s head.
The first Friday night after Golden Week. Johann, who logged in for the first time in a while because tomorrow was a holiday, donned the Chaos Apocalypse set and aimed for the Dungeon of Ice.
The Dungeon of Ice was part of the new dungeons implemented in the recent major update and is one of the so-called Layer Boss Dungeons. By clearing this, you will be allowed to step into the newly implemented Third Layer.
“Zecca-chan and Remma-chan must be in front of the dungeon’s boss room…” Johann said.
She doesn’t know why they’re still there, but she decided to follow them. Many players enter one after another into the entrance, which looks like a hole in the side of an iceberg.
“It’s like a tourist spot… everyone looks like they’re having fun,” Johann said.
After enjoying the energy of everything, Johann takes out the Ghost summoning stone from her storage and calls it.
“Intangible and Track that strong-looking party!” Johann ordered.
“Oh-kay,” Ghost said, immediately disappearing.
When Johann herself disappears with Intangible, she activates her skill Sight Sharing. Ghost’s vision is displayed on a window.
“The floor is covered with ice… Oh! That looks painful,” Johann said.
The members of the party Ghost is tracking occasionally fall and take damage from slipping into holes or down flights of stairs. However, perhaps because of the large number of players rushing in, it seems that monsters are rarely encountered.
This is more of an amusement park maze mansion than a dungeon.
After about an hour, the party reaches the room in front of the Layer Boss. After canceling Intangible, Johann used Shift Change to switch places with Ghost.
“What’s this?” Johann asked.
She warped before the Layer Boss and found a strange sight.
There were 5 doors to the Boss Room, where there was only one in the Dungeon of Insects, and now there was a long line of players in front of them all. Johann was perplexed by the number of people here, it all reminded her of D**ney.
“Ah, Johann-san!”
“…… Over here.”
And then she found some familiar faces.
Zecca, a petite dual-wielding girl dressed in jet-black equipment. And Remma, a girl in her white gorilla suit, was beckoning to her. Apparently, they were also lined up for the doors.
“Long time no see, Johann-san! It’s so good to see you again,” Zecca said.
“… Onee-chan. I was a little lonely,” Remma said.
“I’m sorry. I was vacationing at my parents’ place,” Johann said.
Then, she asked about this situation.
“Oh, this?” Zecca said. “Everyone is lining up to challenge the Layer Boss.”
It was so crowded that at first there were 3 doors, but on the 2nd day they were increased to 5.
“But if you wait in line for about two hours, you can try once. The turnover is fast, right?” Zecca said.
“…The weak parties die quickly. The strong parties win quickly,” Remma said.
“So that’s how it is,” Johann said. “Well then, how many times have you and others challenged it, Zecca-chan?”
“”
“Actually, it’s my 3rd time today. I can’t win easily,” Zecca said.
“… I got very close yesterday,” Remma said.
“Oh, really?” Johann said. “Then, let me join. With the three of us, we’ll make it through, right?”
But, Zecca shook her head.
“Huh……?” Johann went, shocked. “… That’s so mean, Zecca.”
“No, you’ve got it wrong!” Zecca said. “Please listen, Johann-san. It’s not like I’m trying to get rid of you, alright?”
She whispers to Johann so that the surroundings do not hear it.
“I definitely want you to break through here solo, Johann-san,” Zecca said.
“Huh, why’s that?” Johann asked.
“Didn’t you say that you got the summoning stone of the First Layer Boss Kuwa Geiger by clearing it first try and solo?”
“Yeah, that’s what I said,” Johann said.
“Then, I would like you to obtain the summoning stone for the second Layer Boss Crystal Leo,” Zecca said.
Apparently, Zecca likes lions and liked Crystal Leo’s design. Layer Bosses cannot be challenged again once cleared. If her companion Johann obtains the summoning stone, she can admire Crystal Leo anytime.
“But it was a fluke that I won against Kuwa Geiger, so I think it will be very difficult. Let’s give up the summoning stone and clear it together,” Johann said.
“Yo-You can’t do that?” Zecca said, blushing and begging her not to.
“I’ll do it, then,” Johann said.
Then, she continued, “If that’s the case, I think I should do that before logging out… though, I guess I can’t do that now.”
Johann looked for the end of the line and could not find it. If it’s a solo challenge, you’ll have to line up from the back, but with this number of people, the wait will be more than 2 hours.
“Then, shall we meet again tomorrow?” Johann said.
“… I’ll give you the strategy information that we have gathered,” Remma said.
“That’d be great,” Johann said. “Well then, I’ll see…”
“Ah, there y’all are! Maou-han!”
Just when Johann was about to say, “I’ll see you later.”, a casual voice stopped her.
“Kon-san,” Johann said.
“”
“It’s been a long time, Maou-han. What have y’all been doin’?” Kon said.
“I went back to my parent’s house for a while,” Johann said.
“Are you going to challenge the Layer Boss too?” Zecca asked.
“I ain’t ready just yet,” Kon said. “More importantly, I’m here today because I have some business with Maou-han over here.”
“With me?” Johann asked, tilting her head in confusion.
“Tha’s right,” Kon said. “Say, Maou-han: are ya’ll going to challenge the Layer Boss today?”
“No,” Johann said. “I’m not doing it today.”
“Then why don’t we play together for a spell?” Kon asked.
“That’s fine, but… what are we going to do?” Johann said.
Were they going to head to a dungeon somewhere else? Or try leveling up?
“I’ve got good news for y’all, Maou-han,” Kon said.
“Good news?” Johann asked.
“Yup. I got here a plan that will surely make us both a lot of money, y’hear? Won’t you join me, Maou-han?” Kon said.
With a very friendly smile, she proposed something very fishy.
