When “God” Decides To Start Over - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Abyss Base
Translator: CKtalon
In a dark, dank, musty room were eight wooden bunk beds framed with iron.
A heavy steel door stood tightly shut. Despite thirteen people living in the room, there were no windows; there was only a twenty-centimeter-long vent in the ceiling.
The smell of sweat, foul feet, and unknown odors blended into a strange, sour odor that was almost nauseating.
Seven of the eight bunk beds were lined up on both sides. Only one bunk bed was placed very unevenly in the middle aisle, making it appear out of place.
What was even more different was that the other seven bunk beds were basically filthy. Old clothes, quilts, and socks were piled messily on the bed. Only that one bed remained pristine. The blanket also looked ancient, but it was well-kept.
Most of the random stuff was piled on the lower bunk. The top bunk had a quilt folded into a block, and sitting beside it was someone.
It was a woman who looked to be in her twenties. One might even describe her as pretty if not for the scar that went diagonally across her entire cheek.
If one had to use a word to describe her appearance now, ferocity might be more appropriate.
There were a dozen people in the room, but only one woman. She was able to occupy an entire bunk bed clearly not because she was a lady. In fact, there were no gentlemen in a place like this.
The woman was Bandit. No one in this room knew her last name, and no one dared to ask.
Because in this room, she was the boss.
At this moment, Bandit was sizing up a man, a man who had just come to the room today.
Before today, there were only seven people in the room. Today, six young, strong men were sent over.
It had happened so many times before that Bandit had gotten used to it. She even found it a form of pleasure. After all, there wasn’t much to amuse her in a place like this. It was one of her rare indulges to take in the looks of fear, confusion, and bewilderment on the faces of the rookies. Or perhaps it was a spiritual sustenance to feel alive.
Bandit used to be slightly intrigued, but she was now too numb to be in the mood for anything so insipid.
In her nearly three years here, Bandit had seen all kinds of rookies, but this was the first time she had seen a man like this rookie.
Most people were sent here for various individual reasons. No one would willingly come to such a godforsaken place. After all, the death rate here was as high as 20%. On average, two out of ten people died every week.
Anyone who came to such a place would be lucky not to go crazy. No one was in the mood to chuckle.
But the young man wore a smile ever since he stepped into the room.
Although that smile wasn’t exactly charming, it seemed unusually optimistic in this godforsaken place. It even seemed a little blinding.
“What’s your name, rookie?” Bandit asked the younger man, narrowing her eyes as if she found that smile uncomfortable.
“What are you waiting for? Bandit just asked you a question!” A burly man in underpants on the bed beside the young man shouted at him.
“Me? My name is Li Xiu.” Only then did the young man realize that Bandit was asking him. He smiled in reply, revealing two rows of pearly teeth.
“What got you in here to do time?” Bandit frowned. She wasn’t used to the young man’s smile.
“I didn’t do anything wrong,” Li Xiu replied, shaking his head.
“Why would you be here if you didn’t do anything wrong?” Bandit didn’t believe a word Li Xiu said. How could he be sent to such a godforsaken place if he hadn’t done anything wrong?
“Because someone told me this is a man’s paradise, so here I am,” Li Xiu replied seriously.
Haha!
Everyone immediately burst into laughter. These “old-timers” were bending over from their laughter that they were almost out of breath.
“Yes, yes, yes. This is indeed a man’s paradise. After coming here, you will soon reach paradise,” the burly man who had shouted at Li Xiu earlier laughed and said.
Bandit stared at Li Xiu and looked him up from head to toe. She did not know if Li Xiu was really naive or playing dumb. Either way, it was useless here. Whether one could survive or not depended on their own strength and luck.
A strange type of creature suddenly appeared on Earth decades ago and nearly destroyed human civilization.
It wasn’t until a weapon known as a Demon Suit was made that humans had a chance to catch a breather.
Along with the appearance of the creatures that humans named ‘Demon Spirits’ were many strange gates through which the Demon Spirits used for entry.
Those ancient, strange, mysterious gates were scattered across the world, and humans used all manner of weapons to open them and explore their secrets.
Early on, even the most advanced weapons could not hurt them at all. Even the Demon Suit did zero damage.
There was only one way to open the gate, but an extravagant method at that. One had to embed natural gems into the mysterious gates to make them open automatically. Moreover, only human flesh and blood could enter the gates; they could not carry external objects.
Humanity’s exploration of the mysterious gates truly started with that discovery.
It was unknown how many humans died inside the mysterious gates in exchange for some discoveries that were enough to turn human values on their head.
There were different vistas within the explored interior of the gates. Some of those scenes were within human comprehension, while others were beyond human comprehension.
There was one thing in common inside all the explored gates despite the different scenes.
Inside the mysterious gates were special test halls. Humans who entered had to undergo various trials.
Only humans who passed could walk out of it alive.
The so-called test was not the common test that humans knew of. If one passed the test, they would not obtain a graduation certificate. Instead, the benefits they obtained were also unimaginable to ordinary people.
Research on the mysterious gates never ceased, and an uncountable number of humans perished inside.
The underground base known as Abyss was built right next to a mysterious underground gate. People like Bandit basically ran the risk of dying every time they ventured inside the mysterious gate.
Most of these people were death row prisoners, people who owed huge debts, or people who came for some reason of their own.
There were probably very few people like Li Xiu who came here voluntarily. Even if Li Xiu said it himself, not many people believed him.
Buzz! Buzz!
An ear-piercing alarm sounded. Bandit and the other old-timers grimaced.
“Damn it, what’s going on? The Devil’s Gate shouldn’t be open for another three days. Why is it opening now…” The burly man looked flustered and looked at Bandit.
Before Bandit could say anything, a click sounded from the steel door before it automatically opened slowly.
