Chapter 9: Six Trials
Translator: CKtalon
When Li Xiu returned to his room, there were only seven people left. Including him, there were only eight people. In just one trial, five people from the room had died.
When the others saw Li Xiu return, the way they looked at him was completely different from before. They were somewhat envious, but they were more afraid.
Bandit glanced at Li Xiu and didn’t say a word. She closed her eyes and continued resting.
Li Xiu didn’t have anything to say. He returned to his bed and lay down to rest with his eyes closed, but his mind was constantly working.
Old Gu wasn’t a person who could be trusted. The words he said might have been to keep Li Xiu here so that he could continue risking his life to participate in the trials until he was squeezed dry of every last bit of value.
This place was different from the outside world. It wasn’t a big deal for a few people to die here. Even if someone carried out investigations in the future, Old Gu could say that Li Xiu died the first time he entered the Trial Gate. This wasn’t impossible.
Li Xiu didn’t regret coming here alone. Even if Old Gu didn’t let him out, he still had his ways if he really wanted to leave.
There were two Demon Suiters in the Abyss Base. As long as Li Xiu could snatch one Demon Suit, no one could stop him from leaving.
Demon Suiters were very powerful, but that was after putting on the Demon Suit. Demon Suiters were still human. They had to eat, drink, poop, and sleep. It was impossible for them to wear Demon Suits 24/7. There would always be a chance. All he needed to do was wait for an opportunity.
Furthermore, the older Demon Suits had flaws. If he could exploit their weaknesses, it wouldn’t be difficult to snatch it.
No one expected the high and mighty top-notch Demon Suiter to be here.
However, Li Xiu wasn’t in a rush to leave. This was because he wanted to figure out where the admission ticket took him, what was going on with the Demon Spirit trapped in the metal sarcophagus, and what the blood-patterned revolver was.
To figure all of this out, he first had to be able to pick up the blood-patterned revolver.
Li Xiu was the strongest Demon Suiter, but he wasn’t the strongest trial-taker. His strength and physique were only slightly stronger than the average person. That was the result of years of training, but compared to the trial-takers who had been strengthened many times, such a body was still weaker.
In that case, I’ll make my body stronger first. Be it to pick up that strange blood-patterned revolver or to snatch the Demon Suit, it’s my best shot, Li Xiu thought to himself.
Old Gu had taken a fancy to his abilities and wanted him to continue entering the Trial Gate. This was exactly what Li Xiu wanted.
Perhaps it was because of the psychological pressure caused by the trial, everyone in the room quickly fell asleep.
Li Xiu also took the opportunity to rest and fell asleep.
Suddenly, Li Xiu felt someone approaching his bed. Now that Li Xiu had occupied an entire bunk bed, no one should need to approach him.
Li Xiu immediately opened his eyes and realized that there was a figure standing in front of his bed in the darkness. On careful look, it was Bandit.
Bandit placed her slender index finger to her lips and gestured for silence.
Seeing that Li Xiu understood and didn’t make a sound or make any movement, Bandit looked around again. Seeing that there was nothing abnormal in the darkness and that everyone was still sleeping, she actually did something that surprised Li Xiu.
Bandit was like a cat that walked silently. She burrowed into Li Xiu’s blanket and lay down beside him.
Bandit and Li Xiu lay opposite each other. There was almost no distance between the two of them. Their faces were almost touching each other.
“Why didn’t you leave?” Bandit’s voice was extremely soft, so soft that only Li Xiu, who was inches away, could hear her.
Li Xiu looked at Bandit without saying a word. He didn’t understand what Bandit was getting at.
“Didn’t Old Gu take you away because you fulfilled your contract and he wanted to send you out?” Bandit whispered when she saw that Li Xiu didn’t understand what she meant.
“He did,” Li Xiu answered in a low voice.
“Then why are you back?” Bandit stared at Li Xiu and asked again.
“Old Gu said that there’s a Demon Spirit outside, and it caused the tunnel to collapse. We can’t leave now. We have to wait for the rescue team to clean up the Demon Spirit and the collapsed tunnel.” Li Xiu repeated what Old Gu had told him.
“You believe him?” Bandit stared at Li Xiu and asked.
“So what if I don’t?” Li Xiu asked.
Bandit took a deep look at Li Xiu and didn’t say anything else. Like a ghost cat, she slid out of Li Xiu’s blanket and silently returned to her bed.
Li Xiu knew that Bandit didn’t completely believe him. She might even suspect that he was a spy sent by Old Gu.
Li Xiu actually didn’t trust Bandit. He had heard that Bandit had been here for nearly three years. How much debt did she owe that she hadn’t repaid it after three years?
Even a heinous murderer should have left long ago, but Bandit was still here.
Furthermore, in three years, if she entered the Trial Gate once a week, her body wouldn’t only be as strong as it was now. It should have been much stronger.
From Li Xiu’s point of view, it could only be that Bandit hadn’t entered the Trial Gate that many times. Either she was a hidden card set up by Old Gu or there was some special reason.
Before figuring out Bandit’s background, Li Xiu wasn’t willing to have too much contact with her.
There was no distinction between day and night in such a place. Even the concept of time was blurred.
Before entering the Abyss Base, other than their clothes and daily necessities, everything on them had been taken away. There was nothing like watches to keep time.
After sleeping for an unknown period of time, people were already getting up and moving around. There were even people who were using a bathroom that could only accommodate one person.
Li Xiu couldn’t sleep from the reeking smell. Just as he was about to sit up, he heard the ear-piercing alarm again.
“What’s going on? The Trial Gate just opened yesterday. Is it going to open again so soon?” A middle-aged man who had been here for more than a month said uneasily, “Didn’t it only open once a week in the past? What happened?”
“Who cares what happened? The sooner we enter, the sooner we will be liberated. The sooner we complete the contract and leave this godforsaken place, the better. I’ve had enough,” the person beside him muttered as he put on his clothes.
“We’ve only been here for less than a day, and they want us to risk our lives again? Are they trying to kill us? They don’t treat us as humans at all.”
“Since you’re here, it’s best you don’t treat yourself as a human.”
Amidst the curses and complaints, everyone was once again herded into the huge underground cave where the blue stone gate was.
“I have very bad news for everyone. A Demon Spirit came from somewhere outside and discovered our base…” Old Gu stood on the platform and repeated what he had said to Li Xiu yesterday.
“Currently, the gems in the base can barely activate six more trials. From now on, a trial will happen every twelve hours. Regardless of your contract fulfillment, you will have to participate in these six trials.”
Old Gu’s words immediately triggered an uproar. Many people immediately complained unhappily.
