Chapter 14 – Part 1
Elysia returned to her room before sunset, and the first thing she did was her assignment for the next day’s class.
As memorization was not Elysia’s forte, it was clear that the assignment alone would take her a considerable amount of time for her to finish.
She had neither particular interest nor talent in magic, but she had to nevertheless take the magic class tomorrow.
The assignment she was working on was not related to implementing magic.
But rather, she was tasked to engrave in her brain how much power the wizards had in the Empire, even on the continent.
‘Isn’t this brainwashing?’
Elysia thought so, as she worked copying the praises of the wizards.
Time dragged on as she did her assignment against her will when she heard a knock outside of her room.
“Miss, it’s Rachel.”
Rachel’s voice was lower than usual, perhaps she suspected that Elysia was out of the room again.
Elysia answered Rachel’s call in a confident tone, like she was a child who had not been caught in hiding by her parents.
“Come in.”
As soon as Elysia gave Rachel the permission to enter, Rachel opened the door and entered immediately.
“…Miss Ariel is waiting for you.”
“Is it already dinner time?”
Elysia glanced at the clock on the wall; it was a little past dinner time.
“Yes. If you’re busy, shall I inform Miss Ariel to eat first? I’ll bring the Miss’s meal to your room.”
Rachel continued to speak one after another, as if she had been set on manual mode.
Elysia felt a pang of hunger only after Rachel informed her of the dinner time.
“No need, I’ll go down and eat….”
“Miss! Miss Elysia! Are you in there?!”
Completely opposite of Rachel’s earlier behavior, who quietly knocked on the door, a loud noise came from outside.
Elysia and Rachel both recognized the owner of the voice.
It was the same voice as the person who visited Elysia the day before.
“You cannot enter inside until you lower your voice.”
Rachel said, fuming with anger.
Even Rachel in the past was not pleased with the maid, who showed the same disrespectful attitude to Elysia, as same to the other maids.
Meanwhile, Elysia replied to the person outside the door while ignoring Rachel’s words as if the person’s action did not bother her.
“Come in.”
It seemed it was not the right time to eat yet.
She vigorously entered the room, and as soon the door closed, the maid, Fiona, caught her breath.
With her strands of white mixed in her brown hair, Fiona looked old at a first glance, though not as much as Eddie.
Fiona was the maid that served Isabella when she married the Duke of Valtine.
And among the servants, she was the most opposed to the marriage of the Duke and late Duchess Isabella.
“Even if the Miss says she is the Little Master, you’re crossing the line!”
She huffed, as soon as she came inside.
As Fiona talked in a loud voice, unknowingly, Rachel made a displeased face.
Rachel immediately relaxed her expression as soon as she realized that the maid was taller than she.
Of course, as Rachel was behind Fiona, it didn’t matter if she were to make faces at her.
“Only this year alone, there are already over 20 people.”
“What?”
Elysia was looking at Rachel’s sour expression behind Fiona and asked in a nonchalant tone.
It was both in the original and the present.
Fiona’s voice was great.
“There are more than 20 of my children you kicked out this year!”
‘I know. I didn’t know you’d be holding my neck for firing those over 20 people.’
Elysia straightened her back. The last time she fired a maid was a few days after Eden arrived.
However, Elysia found it funny to see Fiona suddenly fuming.
‘When did I check the account book again?’
As far as Elysia remembered, it was only yesterday.
So the reason for Fiona’s behavior was likely because she could no longer tolerate the total amount of money decreasing every time Elysia fired one or two maids.
The more money flows, the easier it is to steal without anyone noticing.
It was clear that Fiona was angry because her share was reduced, even though she held no affectionate relationship with the other maids as she claimed herself.
“Your kids?”
Elysia had known Fiona’s insidious intentions for a long time and deliberately grabbed the end of her words and prolonged the topic.
“Since when did the maids become your children?”
“…that’s not the point here, what I’m telling you is….”
“Since when did you….”
Elysia leaned forward with her elbow on the desk as she placed her chin on her front hand and tapped her cheek with her finger.
“Are you allowed to knock on my door, demanding for me, without asking first for permission?”
At Elysia’s pointed question, Rachel breathed a sigh of relief from behind Fiona.
It seemed that Elysia would not let Fiona’s rudeness of coming in without properly announcing herself in advance and shouting the soon she stepped in inside slip by.
The Elysia of this minute was no longer the weakling who had endured Fiona’s behavior as she had back in the past.
“Huh.”
‘She was still a chick,’ Fiona thought.
Fiona burst out laughing in spite of herself.
30 years.
Unsure of the exact figures, but Fiona had worked for the Duchy for more or less 30 years.
The wrinkles on her face were all proof of her years of ‘service’ to the Duchy.
Regardless of whether or not her track record would be considered as ‘service’ in the eyes of others, Fiona believed that she did.
