Chapter 56
When Phileal arrived, the first thing he saw was the Empress’ lady-in-waiting hitting Anais with a rod. He was so shocked he didn’t even think to say anything and quickly tried to get Anais down from the piano chair.
Anais’s calf was bleeding from the maid’s beating. Anais was taken aback when Phileal approached her, but she was even more taken aback when he tried to get her off the piano chair.
The reason the Empress called him was to torment her. However, as soon as Phileal arrived, it was giving the Empress an excuse to harass her.
“Let go! Phileal!”
“No.”
He forcibly pulled Anais’ arm down as he said so. She was taken aback because he had never acted so decisively against her before. Seeing this, the Empress seemed to be offended and beckoned her lady-in-waiting to beat him.
The lady-in-waiting aide seemed afraid to hit the second bishop, but she soon raised her rod with a confident face, remembering once again that the Empress had the greatest power in this imperial palace.
Slap!
“What are you doing!”
“Uht…”
Phileal was flustered that she had been beaten by the Empress’s lady-in-waiting. However, rather than his burning cheeks, he was more surprised by Anais, who collapsed on top of him wanting to protect him. He collapsed with her to the floor in an instant, to bewilderment and surprise combined.
Then, the lady-in-waiting behind the Empress looked at the Empress and raised her rod. The Empress looked at it and stepped back with her arms crossed.
Slap! Slap! Slap! Slap!
“Uht…”
Anais clenched her teeth, enduring the blow to her back. Then, for a moment, the hitting stopped, and she said.
“Phileal did nothing wrong. Just kill me.”
“Get out of the way, Lilith.”
Phileal tried to stop Anais from trying to stop him. Then Anais hugged him so tightly that he couldn’t move. Phileal could feel the blood stains on her clothes. He doesn’t know where or how much he was hurt, but he was afraid when it was this bloody.
It wasn’t the first time he’d seen Anais covered in blood. So he was afraid to resist further. Because he felt he was going to touch the wound without even realizing it.
“If I die, the Empress will be in trouble.”
“Me? Why?”
Phileal struggled to push Anais away with the palm of his hand. But the more she did, the tighter she hugged him.
“If one day the High Priest of Death goes to God’s side and assists God, Leviathan will take over the High Priest’s place. Will he act as Your Majesty wishes?”
The Empress rolled her eyes and responded with a smile showing that she was having fun.
“Ah.”
The Empress crossed her arms the other way for a moment. Anais, who was looking at her, did not avoid her eyes even though her body was shaking from exhaustion.
“You are not listening. He’s not listening. What’s different about that?”
“Do you really think it’s the same?”
The Empress scratched her cheek in annoyance, and she seemed to be pondering for a moment.
“There’s no way you wouldn’t know.”
“Well, he didn’t answer well, and you didn’t listen to me well.”
“…….”
“But no one knows if it would be more beneficial to have you on my side or him. You’re not listening to me either.”
The Empress looked at Phileal.
She thought he really wanted Lilith’s body. That’s why he was so angry that someone else kept touching his food.
“I have always followed you well, except for things related to Saintess Lilith. You must have a bad memory, Your Majesty.”
“Haha.”
The Empress thought that it was quite offensive for him to provoke her even in this situation. He was terrified that she might hit the woman in front of him again.
“Alright then.”
“…….”
“Shall we make a bet?”
“…….”
“The moment you lose, I will kill that thing.”
“…….”
The Empress’ finger pointed at Anais.
“I will tear her to pieces. How about that?”
“…….”
“Answer me.”
“I don’t want to. Why should I?”
Seeing Phileal glaring at her provokingly, the Empress twisted her lips and said,
“Then I have no choice but to torment the Saintess. Do you want that?”
“…….”
“I’ll ask again. Do you want to make a bet?”
Phileal bit his lip at those words and answered.
“…Yes.”
“Phileal… Don’t do… ugh…”
Anais realized that blood was still flowing from her throat. Her body was so chillingly cold, her vision was blurry. She can’t see anything even with her eyes open.
“Then let’s start the bet tomorrow.”
“Alright.”
“Great.”
The Empress’ lips twisted and she smiled. The last thing Anais saw that day was the Empress’ smiling face looking down at her.
Anais was now used to Phileal’s room. While she passed out in Phileal’s room, Phileal seems to have slept in another room all this time. She only found out after passing out a few times.
Anais was digesting what had happened. Lewarren betrayed her, Lilith tried to kill her, and Kylian tried to kill her too. In addition, the Empress had her lady-in-waiting beat her and watched, and Phileal was beaten for her.
“Ugh…”
“Don’t turn around.”
She recognized who the voice was at once. Phileal’s voice is not that low.
“Your Majesty, why did you come?”
“Don’t talk to me.”
“…….”
Anais was nervous about the strange smell of medicine. The last time she saw him, Kylian tried to kill her.
She couldn’t tell if the surroundings were so dark because it was the priest’s room, or because it was dark outside. The curtains in Phileal’s room were completely black, and they were left closed whether the sun rose or set. It was so dark that she couldn’t see anything even when she opened her eyes.
“Ha…”
Anais let out a deep sigh and felt the heat on her face again. She was lying face down on the pillow. She fell asleep hugging a large pillow, because of her calves.
Her energy was lacking. The divine power was not enough to restore her body. Anais judged that her depressed mood must have played a part in the low energy. But there is nothing to make her feel better, so it was something she just had to accept. She no longer expected to recover as before.
“Is it really because of Your Majesty that Saintess Lilith tried to kill Lady Anais?”
“…….”
“She really wanted to win Your Majesty’s love?”
“Yes,” he replied bluntly.
“Ahk…!”
And he put his hand on her wounded back.
But now. Maybe now, he might have pity on her.
“Even if she doesn’t, doesn’t she already get along well with Your Majesty?”
“She did. Anais is a proud and upright person, so there is no way she will admit her feelings.”
“…….”
“So in order to make my wife realize her feelings, I must use you.”
“What do you mean? Ugh…!”
Kylian threw a wet rag over Anais’ legs. Anais was surprised that he had come to see her, but she wanted to take this opportunity to have a proper conversation with him.
Kylian, on the other hand, thought it was considerable as she was beaten. Even so, his heart was bothered that he could see the white color when she looked into her eyes, the color that seemed to sparkle with something that wasn’t even light.
Because the eyes that had been complaining that they weren’t Lilith were similar to those of Anais before.
However, he heard that she fainted, but seeing that she woke up as soon as he came, it seemed that it was not too bad.
“If I act like I love you, my wife will realize how much she loves me.”
“…To Lilith?”
“Yes, you.”
“No way…”
“Shut up and stay still. Because I want to kill you.”
“…….”
Kylian said this seriously. Then he moved his hand to the side. Anais held her breath, burying her face in the pillow so he could not catch her crying.
“Huht…”
“You’re exaggerating.”
“I hate being hurt the most.”
“Don’t talk like my wife. It’s disgusting.”
Anais struggled to calm her panting breath and speak without crying.
“What about Phileal?”
“The second bishop is in the High Priest’s room.”
“Ah….”
“Are you curious about what happened to your lover?”
“You know we’re not that close.”
Anais knew why he was asking this question. He wanted her to feel bad.
That’s why she didn’t feel bad. She was not one to fall for obvious provocations.
“Your Majesty, have you never loved Lilith?”
“Yes.”
“Even for an hour?”
“Yes.”
“Then, when did your feelings for Anais begin?”
“From the moment I first saw her.”
“Lies.”
“…….”
Anais thought he was lying. The awkward greeting he gave her when he first saw her. And the eyes that avert whenever they see her.
It took her a very long time to get to know Kylian after meeting him. But it wasn’t just close friends who opened their hearts. Even to the day she died, although they were a couple, they were no better than her friends. Even so, they were like colleagues who prevented each other from dying.
“You think you know me so well.”
“Because I have eyes too.”
“Shut up before I twist your neck.”
Anais removed the rag that Kylian had thrown at her calf. Then she heard the sound of the lid opening.
“Ugh…”
He moved the ointment into his hand and casually laid it beside her.
“Don’t just give me the thing, treat me.”
Kylian looked at her, ignoring her words. Anais gave a small sigh and said,
“Why did you come to see me?”
“…….”
“Weren’t you serious about killing me earlier?”
“Yes.”
“You came because you feel sorry right?”
“No?”
“Really?”
“…….”
She waited patiently for Kylian to answer this time.
“I just came because my wife asked me to go.”
“Why did she tell you to come?”
“I have no reason to tell you.”
Kylian couldn’t figure out why he was lying. He had come because he was annoyed when he heard that she fainted after being beaten by the Empress. So he didn’t want to talk about it anymore.
Anais, on the other hand, somehow felt sorry for his answer. She trembled as she spread the ointment he gave her with her fingertips. It still hurts.
“Beg to my wife and admit that you were wrong.”
“…….”
“Just by keeping you alive, you’ve received a favor that you can’t repay.”
“I think I’ve said it a hundred times. I am not Saintess Lilith.”
“Ha.”
Kylian really wanted to kill Lilith, who he didn’t know how far she would deceive him. If he kills her here, he won’t have to worry about what will happen later.
Plus, every time his eyes met hers, he got a weird feeling. It looks like those eyes were making him feel embarrassed like the day he first got engaged to his wife.
“Huht…”
He liked to see Anais tremble in pain. Thinking back on what she’s been through, he doesn’t think she has done anything wrong.
Seeing him smiling, Anais shouted.
“It hurts.”
