Chapter 18: The Only Thing Given

“We’ve not met for only ten days, but you look completely different from when I first saw you.”
It was difficult to tell whether the pretty Goddess was praising or teasing when she made the remark after seeing Xi En who was staring at her.
Xi En was speechless for a long time when the melodious voice which could seemingly belt out classical songs drifted into his ears.
He was nonplussed not because he was entranced by the gorgeous Goddess in front of him.
He just choked up.
There was no way out.
‘Why am I here again?’
He did not die again, did he?
The Goddess chuckled as if she read Xi En’s mind.
“Don’t overthink your present plight. You aren’t back here because you died,” the Goddess replied. “You can check it out yourself. You were summoned this time with your body intact.”
It was then that Xi En noticed it.
True, it was different from when he was summoned here the last time. This time, Xi En was not here without a shell. He came with a tangible body and his feet planted securely on the floor, unlike his previous presence where he floated in the air. This meant…
“I’m summoned here alive then?”
Xi En then looked at the Goddess.
“That’s right.” the Goddess nodded and said, “I see that you’ve left the forest filled with monsters, entered a civilized town and become an Adventurer. It appears you plan to stay in this world. Hence, I summoned you here to ask how you’re doing.”
What a capricious motive, Xi En was going to say. If she had anticipated him going into a town and officially establishing himself in the alternate universe, she could have chosen not to pitch him into a forest full of monsters at the beginning.
His thought was once again answered by the Goddess.
“If I hadn’t put you into the forest right from the start, you won’t be able to level up and pick up so many skills, will you?” the Goddess asked in amusement. “If you haven’t experienced your superiority firsthand, how could you have known that you, the Warrior, are so much better than the ordinary folks within such a short period?”
Xi En’s face showed a grimace.
Did she mean that she had thrown him into the jungle of monsters and not a town of humans to make him realize how extraordinary he was? Wow, was she not afraid that he might have been eaten by a monster instead?
Just as the thought popped into Xi En’s head, the Goddess’ reply came instantly.
“Of course I’m not,” she said assuredly, “With the protection of the Sacred Sword, you’d be okay even if I put you into the magic world. Besides, it was just a forest where the monsters’ maximum levels are at Level 50.”
Xi En could no longer hold himself back.
“Say, my fair Goddess, you aren’t reading minds, are you? How do you know everything that I’m thinking?” Xi En then continued protesting. “And don’t say it like you’ve nothing to do with all of this. Aren’t you the one who made this happen?”
Be it the Sacred Sword or his skills, they were all given to him by the Goddess. Truth be told, Xi En was just a regular person initially.
Just as he believed the thought, the Goddess refuted it.
“Nope, you’ve gotten it wrong.” The Goddess explained, “Whether it’s the Sacred Sword or the skills, they’re yours. I’ve only just awakened them.”
Xi En was dumbfounded.
“Mine?”
He did not quite catch it.
The Goddess explained, “The so-called Sacred Sword is actually a force which originated from the concept of the Warrior. It applies to people from the alternate universe such as yourself who are summoned here as a Warrior.”
The Goddess went on in her melodic voice as if she was singing.
“Just like the folks in Omnipaltansen who could awaken their own skills, such as the exclusive skill, the Warriors of the alternate universe have exclusive skills too. However, the Warriors have an additional feature when compared to the people of Omnipaltansen. Once you’re summoned to this world as a Warrior, you’ll be able to naturally awaken the Sacred Sword and the exclusive skill which are distinctively yours. I’ve only hastened this process and directly awakened your sword and exclusive skill.”
Otherwise, why would they have to summon Warriors from another world?
If she could freely give anyone the powerful Sacred Sword and the exclusive skills, the Goddess would not have to specifically summon people from the alternate universe to defeat the Demon. She could have just picked her Warrior from her own world.
“Basically, if I, a Goddess, have to ask for help from others to defeat the Demon, it at least shows that I can’t beat the Demon, right?” The Goddess made it clear. “If I can give anyone a powerful Sacred Sword and an exclusive skill as I wish, I may as well go defeat the Demon on my own. Why would I even need a Warrior?”
The logic took the words right out of Xi En’s mouth. It made sense…
“In your world, I think there are myths and fables that even the gods can’t intervene with how the world’s doing, right? Even if they see the Demon harming the world, they can only watch. At most, they can offer their help, but let the humans beat the Demon themselves,” said the Goddess as if she was amused. “Unfortunately, this world isn’t the one you know from those fables and folklore. Although we may share certain similarities, this, however, is the reality. There are things which are different still.”
What were those things?
“For example, the deities and demons in this world have been nemeses for as long as one could remember. They’ve been warring since a long time ago,” the Goddess replied in earnest.
“For us, the Devil is our greatest enemy. If we can wipe them out on our own, we’ll have done so a long time ago. It has nothing to do with the rules about not interfering with the world or whatever. It’s more like the deities have influenced the world, interfering with a lot of mortal matters.”
In this world, the mortals believed in the gods. The gods were not abstract but tangible existences.
“You know about the “Blessings” now, right?” the Goddess asked. “‘Blessings’ are the most common form of intervention from us deities to the people. You have my “Blessing” which is the only thing I’ve given you.”
Other than the “Blessing” that was bestowed by the Goddess, everything else was Xi En’s own doing.
The Sacred Sword and the exclusive skill were things Xi En was destined to own. They were not the Goddess’ doing.
In summary…
“Your extraordinary points are mostly from your own efforts, nothing to do with me. Your previous world would’ve wanted it this way. So, don’t point your finger at me, and hold me accountable for it.”
The Goddess’ words rendered Xi En without a comeback which made her grin.
“Since we’ve time, let’s talk about things in this world.”
The Goddess made a wave of her hand, and a tea table with tea was served.
