Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 25
Chapter 25: Of Duty And Decency
“Are you sure I can join the team?”
Xi En’s question stunned the girls.
“What do you mean?” Vivian asked, slightly puzzled. “Do you have any concerns?”
Xi En’s immediate response was to answer honestly – yes, he did. However, it would be considered rude of him to do so. Nonetheless, he did it with tact.
“The members of this team are all female Adventurers. It may be inconvenient when a male Adventurer like me joins the group, right?”
What Xi En meant was that they might have concerns of their own regarding him.
Vivian and her girls did not expect Xi En to bring this up. She ended up smiling.
“We’ll be affected more or less.” Vivian answered sincerely. “But we have actually gone through quite a number of similar scenarios. It was arranged by the guild this time too. Whether it’s for the sake of our duties or the obligation of a senior Adventurer, we should be responsible for training the new recruits.”
“Duty or obligation, huh?” Xi En raised his brows.
“That’s correct.” Vivian smiled as she looked at Xi En. She continued to elaborate. “As Adventurers, we, too, were newbies once. It’s all thanks to the guild’s considerate arrangement and the seniors’ guidance back then that we made it to where we’re today. The guild and the Adventurers have always contributed to the Adventurer’s profession. That’s how the Adventurers and the Adventurers Guild have flourished till today for a thousand years.”
Till today, it is conceivable that the Adventurers and the guild had developed tremendously to become a force to be reckoned with in the world.
It seemed that the Adventurers and the Adventurers Guild were of mutual benefit to each other. The Adventurers accepted various quests to earn rewards and level up via the platform of the Adventurers Guild as it expanded its influence by being the middleman between the Adventurers and their clients. The guild set the rules and regulations to provide proper management for the Adventurers to thrive as a profession.
Take the newbie Adventurers, for example. If they were allowed to take risks on their own without any training or assessment, the odds of them losing their lives during their quests would be much higher regardless of whether they completed their tasks or not.
As a result, the guild required every new Adventurer to go through some coaching and assessment to ensure they could complete the quests and save those who were not qualified for the adventures from unnecessary risks.
Consequently, the policy of a senior Adventurer guiding the juniors became a necessity.
For a millennium, the guild had nurtured the newbies via the system and expanded the profession to its present status today.
Vivian and the girls who were once newbies before had been taken care of by their seniors. As they had received such kindness, it was only proper for them to continue the tradition.
“Is that so?” Xi En nodded while he murmured to himself.
As someone from an alternate universe, Xi En knew that not many could actually achieve it despite understanding the principle. In his past life, there were quite a number who were bitten by those whom they had fed. Despite the ingratitude shown, no one was willing to burn the bridge. Hence, a lot of folks took the kindness for granted. Exactly how many among them were truly grateful to repay the favor?
Perhaps training the newbies was an obligation the senior Adventurers undertook. However, whether all of them performed the duties willingly was a different matter altogether.
Once the new and the experienced were in the same boat, they had to be a team in their adventures, risking their lives together even. The capability of each team member would directly determine the difficulty level the team could undertake in the future.
If the team members were capable, they could accept more dangerous quests and tasks which earned them more money. On the other hand, if they were weak in their abilities, safety was to be considered. Hence, the team would not be able to accept riskier quests. Their subsequent missions would definitely be more challenging.
In short, the addition of a newbie to a veteran Adventurers group was surprisingly, or unsurprisingly, a burden.
Consequently, there would be fewer teams which wanted to guide the newbies. Vivian’s group was an all-girls team. In addition, they were all pretty. The impact on the team would be magnified with the addition of a male Adventurer.
Nonetheless, Xi En should at least be impressed by Vivian’s ambition and sense of responsibility in this situation.
“It’s just for a month. Our group has been pretty busy prior to this, and we haven’t had a good rest for a long time. So, a respite will be good for us. Besides, it’s a unanimous decision by the team. You don’t have to worry.”
That was what she said.
Xi En thought about it before bowing to the girls.
“I appreciate your guidance for the coming month then.”
Finally, Xi En accepted the present situation.
“Alright.” Vivian smiled and promptly suggested, “Without further ado, let’s take on some simple tasks today and get you familiarized with the job of an Adventurer.”
There was no way Xi En would reject the suggestion. He wanted to understand the profession as soon as he could to be able to upgrade himself in the future.
The others did not express any opinion as they followed Xi En and Vivian out of the room to head for the lobby downstairs.
…
When Xi En and the girls came down to the lobby, the whole floor went quiet all of a sudden.
Despite the abrupt silence, Vivian, Diyeer, Lumiya, and Meilica did not make any comments at all. Instead, they looked at each other before making their way to the announcement board.
Xi En who was with them heaved a sigh. ‘Things are getting complicated as I thought.’
The Adventurers in the lobby were captivated by the girls before they shifted their attention to Xi En. Undoubtedly, Xi En would be the main focus whether he liked it or not for being a part of an all-girls team.
Although the attention was on him, Xi En appeared unfazed. After all, he had expected it.
