Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 26
Chapter 26: The Quest Levels
Since he was the center of attention, he had to accept it in spite of his reluctance. Xi En had once again showcased his ability to accept and adapt. He was just wary of trouble, but he was not cowardly. Besides, there was no need to crack his head over it.
Xi En followed the girls to the guild’s announcement board. He then perused the board, diverting himself from the attention he was getting around him.
The announcement board where the Adventurers Guild published the quests was just a decorated wall.
Pieces of parchment were pasted on the board. They were all in different colors: some were iron black, some were bronze, while the rest were either silver, gold, or platinum. The more uncommon colors were fewer in number and were pasted higher on the wall.
In other words, the iron black parchments were the most common on the board. They were pasted right at the bottom while the platinum-colored parchments were rare and at the very top.
Vivian began explaining to Xi En.
“These are quest tickets published after being approved by the guild. As you can see, each ticket is in a different color and these colors represent the difficulty level of the quests.”
The guild staff had informed Xi En that the Adventurers were ranked from Class 1 to Class 7 and would be given the corresponding medallions as listed: iron, bronze, silver, gold, platinum, mithril, and obsidian medallions. The guild crafted the tickets with the same material the medallions were made from.
“Usually, Class 1 Adventurers with the Class 1 Elementary Iron Medals could only accept quests of said level. The same applies to the following respective classes. For example, the platinum quests could only be accepted by Class 5 Adventurers who had Class 5 Special Platinum Medals.”
“Lower ranked Adventurers cannot accept higher level quests. On the other hand, the higher ranked Adventurers can accept lower level quests. This is the guild’s policy.”
“There’s an exception, though. It’s not completely forbidden to take quests higher in level than your rank but you must first form an Adventurers group. The team’s capability must be recognized by the guild before it can take on the higher level tasks,” said Vivian.
“In the case of our group, we can accept quests at the level of the highest ranked member in the team. At the same time, we’re also allowed by the guild to accept quests which are a level higher.”
For this reason, a lot of Adventurers were willing to group together as a team.
Firstly, they would have companions which made their adventures easier and safer. Secondly, a team could undertake higher level quests.
“Obviously, it isn’t just a matter of forming a team. If there’s a large imbalance among the team members’ abilities or they can’t cooperate to create a more effective battle strength, then the guild won’t give the approval. Thus, recruiting team members just to make up the numbers won’t work. Forming a group is a serious affair that involves your earnings, achievements, and other issues. In the future, you’ll need to seriously consider it as well.”
Vivian went on with her explanation.
“The higher the quest level, the more difficult it’ll be to accomplish it. However, the reward will be more lucrative. I believe you must have known?”
Xi En knew about it.
The highest platinum quest ticket which was pinned at the top of the announcement board bore an inscription.
“Immortal Magic Potion”
Mission: Explore the sunken remains of the ancient civilization in the deepest part of the Fulucigagne Swamp and recover the legendary immortal magic potion.
Reward: A hundred thousand gold coins
Both the treasure and the reward of this quest were incredibly tempting.
Regardless of the fact that immortality was highly coveted by the earthly beings, the reward of a hundred thousand gold coins would cause one to go into a frenzy. In a world where a bronze coin could buy an apple and a gold coin was worth ten thousand bronze coins, a hundred thousand gold coins was perhaps equivalent to hundreds of millions or even billions in Xi En’s past life.
In fact, this was the highest quest level on the announcement board and the ticket with the highest difficulty level and reward among the platinum quests.
If it were an iron graded quest, the reward was considerably less. There were tasks where the rewards were a few bronze coins to a handful of silver coins. The quests were quite varied, from collecting herbs to finding someone. The wide ranging tasks were quite a marvel.
‘I can only accept quests of this level if I haven’t joined the team, huh?’
For the first time, Xi En was thankful that he joined the all-girls group.
“Oh yeah.” On discovering something interesting, Xi En then asked Vivian, “Aren’t there mithril and obsidian classes too? Why aren’t there quests of these levels?”
A chuckle escaped Vivian.
“The mithril and obsidian graded quests are usually not published on the announcement board.” Vivian clarified, “A mithril graded quest normally involves the life and death of a town or a noble family. So, it won’t be posted here. On the other hand, the obsidian graded quests are the most difficult which usually involves a nation’s fate. Even if there is such a quest, it’ll be carried out in confidence, and only assigned to famed Class 7 Adventurers by the king or the royals themselves. The mithril and obsidian graded quest tickets hardly ever appear in the Adventurers Guild in Lamigione, let alone the kingdom’s capital.”
Xi En had a clearer picture now. Under normal circumstances, the highest level quest would only be a platinum. While he mulled over the quests posted, Vivian and the girls were already selecting the tasks, tearing them off the board and heading to the counter for registration.
All the quest tickets on the announcement board had to be taken to the counter for approval by the guild staff before one was considered as officially accepting the task.
Vivian’s group picked out three quest tickets.
“Collect The Spring Water”
Mission: Collect three bottles of spring water from a magic source. The source must be at least medium in size.
Reward: Twenty gold coins
“Fire Lizard’s Coat”
Mission: Head to the Mangal Mountains where the Fire Lizards reside. Kill thirty of them and bring back their hides.
Reward: Ten gold coins
“Clear The Bloodsucking Vine”
Mission: The Bloodsucking Vines have overgrown the main path to the northern town, Fuleisia, posing a significant danger. Clear the path as soon as possible.
Reward: Ten gold coins
One of these quest tickets was gold graded while the other two were silver graded. They were all tasks that could be completed within a short time.
