Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 27
Chapter 27: You Need A Weapon?
The quest tickets that were categorized, vetted, and published by the guild were not segregated according to the reward but the level of difficulty and danger.
The higher its grade was, the more difficult and dangerous the quest would be. Hence, the reward will be commensurate with the difficulty level.
It was not an absolute rule, however. There were highly rewarding quests in the lower grades as well.
Usually, those quests were rather safe whereby the accomplishments were not much of a challenge. Nevertheless, they took a long time to finish. At times, certain prerequisites or even luck was needed to complete the task.
For example, there was an iron graded quest to privately tutor the child of a noble family on the use of weapons. The request was that only those Adventurers whose weapon skills had attained a certain level could qualify. The task was only considered complete when the child had fully mastered the skill. At any rate, the reward was a hefty thirty gold coins.
Such a well-paid quest would usually not be categorized as high grade due to the minimal risk involved and high chances of completion. Even a Class 1 Iron Adventurer could undertake the task.
On average, it might take a student several years to learn a new skill. Unless the prospective student was a genius, the person who accepted the quest would need to spend years to complete it. If the student was a slow learner or lacked talent, he or she might not acquire the skill despite years of tutoring. As a result, the Adventurer would end up not getting the reward in addition to having wasted a lot of time.
For this reason, the quest levels only emphasized the difficulty and danger of the tasks.
Hence, Vivian and the girls took three quests in one go. All of them were quests that could be completed within a short time but were slightly challenging.
The level of such quests was usually higher and the reward was usually comparable to the lower grade quests which were safe but required years to complete. However, there was more risk involved.
Looking at the group’s relaxed expression, however, it appeared that the level of the quests did not bother them as much. Otherwise, they would not have undertaken three in a go. Besides, they undertook the three tasks simultaneously since the three tasks were all along the same route.
“The habitat of the Fire Lizards, the Mangal Mountains, has a medium-sized magic source. The path to the Mangal Mountains is also the main path to the northern town, Fuleisia. Thus, we can finish all three of these quests together.”
Vivian explained to Xi En that this was usually what most Adventurers would do, accept several quests simultaneously depending on their objective.
Initially, Xi En thought that the Adventurers would take on quests as mentioned in most games or novels which is to accept and complete one quest at a time. However, it seemed that taking on a few quests simultaneously was the natural thing to do in adventures.
Just as Vivian stated, the three quests could be accomplished together since the habitat of the Fire Lizards, the Mangal Mountains, had a medium-sized magic source, and the main path to the Mangal Mountains passed through the northern town, Fuleisia.
The Adventurers needed to consider how to complete their adventures in a faster and more effective manner when they took on the tasks. They had to assess their own capabilities and conditions to match the difficulty levels of the quests they picked.
Moreover, the Adventurers needed to have the knowledge to accomplish their tasks. Like the three quests that Vivian and her team undertook, they had to know what a magic source was and where it was commonly found. Also, how would one skin a Fire Lizard’s coat after capturing it? And how would one get rid of the Bloodsucking Vines? One must be equipped with such knowledge. Otherwise, completing the tasks would be a big challenge no matter how capable one was.
It struck Xi En that this was now his reality. It was different from a novel or a game. Not everyone could make a living out of being an Adventurer.
Subsequently, Vivian’s group held the three quest tickets which were already processed and left the guild under everyone’s gaze.
…
“Oh yeah.”
After they left the guild, they headed toward the gate of Lamigione. All of a sudden, Vivian looked at Xi En.
“Don’t you have to gear up before departing?”
Vivian could not be blamed for asking. All Adventurers carried out their quests in places where monsters resided. In addition, they faced all kinds of danger. Obviously, one had to be well-equipped with high-grade equipment when one was going on an adventure.
On the other hand, it was not like one must be cladded in full heavy armor like Vivian, but there had to be at least a guard or a shield, right?
Lumiya, for example, wore a light leather armor which did not hinder her movements, while Diyeer had a chest guard, wrist and knee guards, and other protective gear under her black robe. Meilica was the only person with a mage robe. The robe was thrumming with incredible magic waves which made it appear truly magical.
On the contrary, Xi En wore a black attire which he had casually selected. The only thing he carried with him was the long-shaped parcel. He seemed more fitting as a tourist than an Adventurer.
Naturally, Vivian voiced her concern when he seemed so poorly dressed as an Adventurer.
“If you don’t have enough money, I can help.”
Vivian spoke her mind. She could lend Xi En some money to purchase some equipment.
Xi En, on the other hand, was hesitant. It was not like he had not given it any thought. It was just…
‘The protection I get from using the Sacred Sword means I’ll only have minimal injuries. Even without it, I have the “Physical Resistance” and the “Magic Resistance” skills. I don’t think I need any gear at all.’
Both the skills mentioned were leveled to the maximum by Xi En. Although they were not as impressive as the Sacred Sword which reduced 99% of the damage, Xi En felt that nothing could cause him much damage unless it was an extraordinary ominous threat.
In this case, there was no need for any armor. However…
“Never mind the armor. I need a weapon.”
Xi En told Vivian.
“A weapon?”
It was not just Vivian or Diyeer. Even Lumiya and Meilica who had been silent were surprised as well. Vivian was the one who voiced her curiosity.
“Don’t you already have a weapon with you?”
She meant the long-shaped parcel Xi En was carrying. No matter how she looked at it, it looked like a weapon.
Regardless, Xi En stroked his nose.
“This weapon isn’t very effective. Better not use it.”
That was Xi En’s reply.
