Qin Guanglin realized that having a girlfriend attracted unwanted attention.
“Lin, is this your girlfriend? So beautiful.”
“When did the Qin kid learn how to date?”
“Where are you going, Qin? Hey, who is this girl?”
He was only taking He Fang to buy groceries at the market. Sure enough, those uncles and aunties from his neighborhood behaved as if they saw something new.
Isn’t it enough to just say hello like they usually do? Why were they so focused on He Fang?
He pretended to be natural at dealing with those people, but deep inside, he felt stifled. Indeed, they had progressed too fast. With them together right in front of the people he was very familiar with, it was indeed very new.
He Fang faced them calmly, smiling and nodding from time to time. She did not seem shy at all. Every time she noticed Qin Guanglin’s grip loosen, she would clutch hold of his hand and shoot him a warning glance.
Qin Guanglin had no choice but to pull her along as he quickened his pace. He wanted to end this embarrassment quickly.
“Follow me. You’re in charge of carrying the stuff.” At the market, He Fang walked in front with her hands behind her back. It was not the right time to hold hands.
Qin Guanglin did not know how to buy groceries. He followed relaxedly behind as a handyman. He watched as He Fang expertly picked at the stall, occasionally squeezing the items gently to see if they were fresh.
“Potatoes, carrots, and we’ll get a few more peppers… Get more bags.”
“We’ll take this cucumber too…”
“Do you still have pickled vegetables at home? Nevermind, we’ll buy some. Go over there and get the boss to pick a blackfish.”
“You guys like to eat sweet and sour cabbage, too. Here, hold this properly.”
“I’ll get a white radish to make some side dishes for you. You can pair it with porridge in the morning if you have no appetite.”
“Looks like we’re almost done. For three people… Let’s add some garlic moss. There is still some dried fungus at home.”
Qin Guanglin was as quiet as a mouse all the way. When they were done, he could not help but ask, “How do you know so much?”
His family’s taste is strange. They dislike meat except for fish and chicken. They love vegetarian stir-fry dishes that are difficult to find outside, especially the garlic moss. Other people usually eat stir-fried meat or scrambled eggs, but they have never come across another family that stir-fries fungus.
“I told you Teacher He is incredible.” He Fang raised her chin triumphantly. “Your Four Pillars of Destiny show that you’re connected with water and wood, clear but not muddy, good at wounding officials, and your prosperity depends on the Sun God. I can tell that you eat vegetarian.”
“…” The handyman was unclear. “Are you superstitious?”
“Just know that I know how to calculate it, so you must listen to me.” He Fang raised her hand and touched Qin Guanglin’s head. She smiled kindly. “Because my mouth had been enlightened.”
Watching her turn and walk towards his home, Qin Guanglin quickly followed with the groceries in both hands. “Then… Then when we met the first time, were you serious?”
“I was serious.”
“Were you able to tell from my face that we would be… together?”
“Yes, from the first time I met you.”
“What else can you predict?”
“I can predict that you’ll win the lottery.”
“Really?”
“No.”
It shut Qin Guanglin down, but he was still curious and felt that it was mystical. “You know how?”
He Fang turned around with a smile, went back a few steps, and stretched out her petite hand to pinch his face. “You’ve never bought lottery tickets.”
“Yeah.”
“You’ve never smoked a cigarette.”
“That goes without saying.”
“You have a scar on your right foot from breaking a bowl when you were young.”
Qin Guanglin widened his eyes in amazement. “Yes, yes, yes!”
“You also have a mole on your thigh.”
“…” Qin Guanglin was speechless. “Y-you…”
“Do you believe me now?” He Fang turned back and looked at him. “Remember to listen to me.”
“Are you a vixen?” Qin Guanglin took a step back. He heard that vixens and spirits often appear to humans to tell their fortunes.
“Of course not.” He Fang turned around and continued walking. “Orthodox Chinese traditional culture, The Thousand Faces of Dunjia. Amazing, right?”
“It’s a little scary.” Qin Guanglin felt that he had discovered her secret. “Did you follow that Dunjia thing to find me?”
“I can’t reveal my secrets. Open the door.” She stood in front of Qin Guanglin’s house and stopped walking.
“The key is in my pocket.” Qin Guanglin raised the groceries in his hands and gestured to her. “You take it.”
“Left pocket or right pocket?” She went to Qin Guanglin and patted his pockets lightly. “Here, I found it.”
“It’s the one in the middle.” There were three keys on his key chain.
“Got it.” He Fang cracked the door open, then reached over to take the groceries from Qin Guanglin. “Give me a bag.”
“Why? I can just carry them.” Qin Guanglin dodged her. “Go in.”
“Student Qin, you must be obedient.” She forcefully took a bag. “It’s not good for me to go empty-handed.”
“That’s true…” Qin Guanglin was ashamed. He Fang was still the thoughtful one.
Carrying the groceries, he walked behind He Fang and entered the house. Mother Qin was fiddling with the pot of monstera in the living room. When she turned her head towards the commotion, she immediately saw He Fang.
“He Fang, you’re here. Why did you buy so many things?” Mother Qin quickly put down whatever was in her hands and wanted to take over the groceries in He Fang’s hands. “Are you tired? Lin still has a hand free.”
“I’ll do it, Aunty. I don’t want to trouble you.” He Fang brought the groceries to the kitchen. “Guanglin said that it’s his birthday, so he wanted to buy some food and come home to eat with you. I hope I’m not disturbing you?”
“No, not at all.” Mother Qin turned to glance at Qin Guanglin. This lad is getting more sensible. He had mentioned earlier that he wasn’t coming home to eat. But then, he brought He Fang over.
Qin Guanglin silently carried this untarnished reputation.
Putting down all the groceries, Mother Qin cheerfully turned around and prepared to soak the rice. “Go enjoy yourselves. I’ll cook.”
“Aunty, please rest. Guanglin and I will cook tonight.” He Fang took the apron that was hanging on the wall and tied it around her waist.
“That won’t do. How can I make you do it?” Mother Qin was not willing. “I already feel bad for making you help me the last time. Listen to Aunty, go and relax.”
“When we were getting groceries earlier, he said he wanted to try my cooking,” He Fang shyly said as she continued tying the apron around her waist.
“Don’t listen to that brat.” Mother Qin glared at Qin Guanglin. “How can anyone invite someone and make them do the cooking? That’s not sensible at all.”
He Fang secretly shot Qin Guanglin a look. Qin Guanglin understood what she meant and quickly ushered his mother outside. “Mom, please rest. We’ll make you a good meal.”
“Can you… Can you cook?” Mother Qin patted him. “Doesn’t He Fang have to do most of the cooking?”
Qin Guanglin only focused on getting her out of the kitchen. “I’ll help wash the vegetables and hand her the salt.”
“Just wait until we’re done, Aunty,” He Fang chimed in from the kitchen.
Qin Guanglin pushed Mother Qin out to the living room and returned to the kitchen. He Fang was already rinsing the rice when he returned. He looked around, then took a potato and began to peel it.
“Clean the fish first. There’s no rush for the potatoes,” He Fang instructed him from the side.
“Oh.” He took out the fish that the stall owner had caught for him. He asked, “What do you plan to cook today?”
“It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but you’ll get used to it.” He Fang’s voice also quietened. “When things are more familiar, I can cook for you regularly.”
“…”
Qin Guanglin felt that even if she grew out a furry tail and said that she wanted to eat him, he would not resist.
