When Qin Guanglin finished cleaning the fish, He Fang stretched over and took it. “Go peel the potatoes.”
“Okay.” He washed his hands, took the potatoes, rinsed them under the tap twice, and then peeled them with a peeling knife.
When he looked up, He Fang had placed half of the fish flat on the cutting board. She pressed one petite hand on the tail while the other held a knife. She quickly ran the blade through the body, and soon, there were thin slices of fish fillets.
Qin Guanglin was inexplicably worried. The blade was dragging right and left around her fingers and could easily cut her if it tilted slightly. She moved so quickly, too. Within that short time, she already portioned half of the fish into three parts.
If he were the one doing it, he definitely would not dare to use such a technique. At the very most, he would only cut it slowly with one hand. Pressing on the fish with the other hand was too dangerous.
He Fang still thought that the knife was not sharp enough. She scrutinized it, took a small bowl, turned it over, and then sharpened the blade with the bowl’s bottom.
“You…” Qin Guanglin wanted to speak out of concern but held his tongue when he saw her slice the fish again. If she lost focus and cut her finger, that would not be good.
“What?” He Fang’s hands did not stop. She didn’t even turn to look at him.
“Nothing, nothing.” Qin Guanglin couldn’t quite sit still. “You should focus, don’t bother about me.”
“This fish is too big. Just half of it is enough for the dish. Place the rest in the fridge.” He Fang told him, “Place it in the freezer, leave the head here.”
“Okay.”
It was a big, black fish that Qin Guanglin especially chose, weighing a hefty 1.5 kilograms. Initially thinking that it was enough for three people, he did not expect that only half of it was enough.
“Oh yes, see if there are any pickles in the fridge,” He Fang called out again.
“Focus on your cutting.” Qin Guanglin could not help but say, “Don’t talk.”
Looking through the fridge, he found a small half-pack of pickles. He brought it to the kitchen, put it aside, and sat on the little bench. He then looked at He Fang.
Just before she cooked, she tied her hair back tightly, forming a big ball on the back of her head. A few strands of hair curled out and shook slightly with her movements.
He Fang seemed thrilled as she hummed quietly. She took the sliced fish fillets with a knife, placed them in a large bowl beside her, and looked for the seasoning.
“What are you doing in a daze? Go soak the dried fungus and then wash the vegetables.” He Fang turned around and saw him sitting on the bench. She immediately directed him to carry out tasks.
“How much should I soak?” Qin Guanglin got up and looked around. He found the bag of dried fungus in a corner.
“Just a handful will do.”
“A large handful or a small handful?” he asked with uncertainty. This thing would expand after soaking, so there was a massive difference between the sizes of a handful.
He Fang went over and drove him away with her little hands. “You better go wash the vegetables. I’ll do it.”
“Are you tired, dear girl? This silly boy knows nothing. Why don’t I help you?” Mother Qin stood at the door of the kitchen again, smiling as she watched the two work in the kitchen.
“No need, Aunty. He’s doing a good job.” He Fang grabbed two small handfuls of dried fungus, put them in the basin, and ran them under the tap.
“Yes, I know everything.” Qin Guanglin took the vegetables and placed them under the running tap. “Don’t stand here. Go and sit down.”
“Make sure you wash it clean.” Mother Qin was only a little worried that they would be too busy. When she saw nothing like that, she left with confidence and no longer disturbed them. In her opinion, it was terrific and would bring the two closer together.
He Fang put seasoning and cornstarch on the fish fillets. Stretching out her small hands, she rubbed the seasoning in and set the fish aside. She then took the potatoes that Qin Guanglin peeled and started shredding them. The chopping board made a sound with every cut she made.
The more Qin Guanglin looked, the more he was surprised. Mother Qin had mentioned that He Fang had excellent knife skills, but he did not expect it to be this good. Her small hands never stopped holding the knife, and it was as if the blade had a life of its own as it slowly turned the potatoes into long and thin strips. She then began to cut the carrots.
From Mother Qin’s cutting skills that he usually saw, He Fang’s talents were not just slightly different. Her skills differed by miles with her speed and the products she churned out.
“Have you worked in a kitchen before?” Qin Guanglin could not resist asking.
“Take a guess.” He Fang turned to him and raised her brow.
“Look at your hands,” he said in surprise. He Fang’s hands were still cutting away when she turned her head to him.
“Witnessing Teacher He’s awesomeness yet again, right?”
“Are you a frog princess?” Qin Guanglin looked at her side profile suspiciously. He realized that she looked good as she cut vegetables in an apron.
“What if I am? Will you still like me?” He Fang took the cucumber and cut off the ends, making loud thuds with her blade.
Hearing this, Qin Guanglin turned his head and glanced towards the living room, feeling a little embarrassed. He always thought it was awkward to talk about these kinds of things in front of his family.
He turned his head and was about to speak, but He Fang snuck a piece of cucumber into his mouth. His voice suddenly became muffled. “Are you going back to Luo River to sleep tonight?”
Luo River was the largest river nearby, and it was how Luo City got its name.
“Where else would I sleep?” He Fang retorted, “If you have a fish tank in your bedroom, I’ll sleep in your room.”
“How big should the fish tank be?” Qin Guanglin felt that he should transform everything into something huge, and ordinary fish tanks would not be enough.
They washed everything, and He Fang did not mind Qin Guanglin idling and chatting by her side. “Then we won’t need a fish tank. Why don’t I just sleep in your room?”
“No, no.” Qin Guanglin quickly shook his head. This joke could not go on anymore. He glanced embarrassedly at the living room again and whispered, “Girls must be reserved. Don’t always joke about such things with me.”
“Am I pretty?” He Fang mimicked his whispering.
He took a close look at He Fang in the apron again. “Yes… Very pretty.”
“Then why are you rejecting a beautiful woman’s embrace?” She blinked at Qin Guanglin. “My figure is not bad either. Isn’t it good to warm up your bed?”
“I already said, don’t make such a joke!” Qin Guanglin kept sneaking peeks at the living room. He could not allow Mother Qin to hear this.
“Tsk!”
He Fang was already heating the wok. “Stay back. Don’t get scalded.”
Qin Guanglin obediently retreated to the kitchen door. Thinking about her words, he could not help but look down. He saw the slight bulge at a glance and turned away embarrassedly. He snuck another glance a few seconds later.
He had never thought about her figure before. Now that she mentioned it, he could not help but look at her.
This woman did it on purpose!
Sizzle!
The vegetables sizzled after He Fang tossed them into the wok. She stir-fried them with a spatula, and the fragrance quickly wafted, overflowing the entire kitchen. Qin Guanglin looked at her serious face and felt an indescribable feeling in his heart. He wanted this to go on forever.
He took two steps back to find a suitable angle. He used his fingers and traced the image, wanting to capture it in a picture.
