Chapter 1. The Heron prince
‘But why can’t I feel his presence?’
The boy was deeply puzzled. The martial arts his family had taught him since he was a child were now at a considerable level.
It shouldn’t have been too difficult to read the aura of a child in front of him, but he hadn’t even noticed him until he was right in front of him.
Even now that he could see him, he couldn’t feel his presence. If he continued to close his eyes, he would think there was no one in front of him.
Judas smirked at the bewildered boy.
“Nice to meet you my dear.”
“……?”
The boy was flustered twice more by the child’s unchildlike tone. But he quickly regained his composure and removed his hand from the hilt of his sword.
“…… Pardon me, I’m new here.”
“No, it’s okay. This old man is new, too in a way.”
At Judas’ kind reply, the boy squinted and looked him over.
“An old man?”
The boy looked no more than seven years old, no more than ten at his most.
He looked frail, as if he could collapse at the slightest touch, but his golden eyes sparkled with life.
The smile that lingered on his face made him seem even more childlike.
‘Special child?’
When the boy said nothing but stared, Judas blinked at him with an ‘ah’ look.
“Oh my, what am I saying? Hahaha.”
The boy looked at Judas, muttering something even more unintelligible about how ‘his mind often wandered in his old age’, and quickly deduced his identity.
Long silver hair that seemed to glow with a life of its own, unlike an old man’s old hair, and golden eyes that sparkled with life from a while ago.
The combination of colors resembling a gemstone was only one bloodline in the empire.
‘The First Prince.’
The Emperor’s beloved heir by blood.
But so weak that he is like a well-made doll, useless to anyone.
The rumored Heron Prince.
The boy’s eyes lit up.
‘Weak? Doesn”t look like it.’
His aura was different, not to mention his unreadable presence.
He looks a little languid, but it’s not laziness, it’s a leisure that flows out of him. His body may be frail, but there was no feeling of weakness in his eyes.
“I suppose it’s fate that I met you here. Nice to meet you. What’s your name?”
“…… Ethan.”
“Ethan, ‘Child of Eternity’. It suits you well.”
Ethan’s eyes widened at the nonchalant response.
What Judas just said was an ancient translation. A name not commonly known, a name that even Ethan himself had only received from his family.
Only Yigret, the great sage, knew entirety of the ancient language.
However, it was possible that those who were descended from the blood of the Emperor had some knowledge of the ancient language.
There was more to the fragile-looking child in front of him than the rumors suggested.
“That’s right, I didn’t introduce myself. My name is …… Judas. I’m called Judas.”
“…….”
“Could you be looking for something, my dear?”
Judas gestured to the booklet he was holding. Ethan slid the booklet he was holding down for Judas to see.
It was a map of the school.
“I was looking for the administration building.”
Judas stared at the map and tilted his head.
Ruvarh academy was very large and had many different facilities, and it could be difficult to find your way around. It was not a place to get lost with such a clear map.
He’s a new student entering this year. His age is 15.
Listening to Yuni’s information, Judas slowly raised a finger and pointed in one direction.
“I think the place you’re looking for is probably this way.”
Whoosh.
The chilly breeze of early spring blew through Judas’ fingertips.
Following the breeze around the child, Ethan turned his head to check the direction. He saw a white building that he assumed was the school’s administration building.
Ethan bowed his head in gratitude.
“……, I won’t have to wander any further. Thank you for your kindness.”
“I am glad to hear it, and I will see you around, Ethan.”
Smiling softly, Judas walked past him and resumed walking.
Ethan glanced at his silver hair fluttering in the breeze and began to walk toward the school office.
‘Bizarre kid…….’
Finding his way was a breeze for Judas, as he could just follow the gentle wind as it led him, even if it was his first time in the academy.
Even after only a short walk, his weakened body began to slow down, starting with his breathing.
Wiping the sweat from his neckline with the back of his hand, Judas stopped to catch his breath.
“This body’s stamina is even worse than that of the original old man’s”
It didn’t seem to have been in this condition a few months before he died as Yigret. What kind of physical strength is weaker than a 90-year-old man?
Judas looked down at my body with pity.
It wasn’t just a lack of exercise. He was born weak. He couldn’t even walk for a long time; running in his dreams.
Don’t overdo it, Yigret.
Yuni circled around him with her words of worries. A cool breeze blew in, cooling his sweat, and he breathed a little easier.
Judas smiled weakly.
“It’s okay, dear, we’re almost there.”
He was right. The building was quiet without anyone walking, with classes already started.
Judas climbed the stairs very slowly. Every inch of his body creaked and ached. He made a mental note of the limits of his movement.
[Economics Class A: Room 301].
Standing in front of the classroom, Judas read the sign in fancy script and pushed open the door.
Screech
The sound of wood rubbing against wood was unusually loud.
The eyes of the teacher and the students in the class turned to him at the same time.
An aging economics teacher in her fifties adjusted her glasses and confirmed his identity.
“….. Mr. Judas. Are you well?”
Despite his status as a prince, he was only a student at the academy.
As if to confirm that fact, Judas gave a small nod at the teacher’s bluntly condescending remark.
Before the teacher could say anything more, the bell rang, signaling the end of class.
At the sound of a cathedral bell, the teacher closed his open book. Before leaving the classroom, he remembered to turn to Judas and say a few words.
“No matter how noble your lineage, I have no choice but to fail you if you are absent too often.”
The teacher was gone, but the students still hadn’t left their desks. The nature of economics required a lot of handwriting, as they had to transfer their notes from the blackboard.
Judas approached the board with interest and scanned the notes.
“Isn’t this His Imperial Highness?”
“……?”
A group of students gathered around him. When Judas turned around, the first student to speak raised his mouth corner mockingly.
“Ah! No, we’re supposed to call everyone in the academy by their first name instead of the proper form. That’s the rule, Mr. Judas.”
He was right at first glance, but it was an obvious mockery to call him out for confirming that common knowledge one more time.
Judas blinked slowly, then looked up at him.
Compared to his smaller frame, the boy had grown into his fourteen years. His sharply upturned eyes and sturdy build gave him a fierce appearance.
But he was stunned by Judas’s nonchalant response.
“…… Huh. Can I call you by your first name? How kind of you? Why don’t you tell me your name?”
Judas and Baikal, even if not Yigret, had never actually spoken together.
Even if he did, they didn’t even give a straight answer back.
Frequent illnesses, skipping classes, and eventually being ostracized by the group led Judas to stop talking to anyone.
It was obvious.
“……Well, since you haven’t been able to keep up with your attendance, it’s not unreasonable that you don’t remember ……, Baikal.”
“Sounds good.”
Something was off. Baikal and the other students exchanged questioning glances. The First Prince they knew, was not the same as this one.
They knew him as the Heron Prince.
He was expressionless, always pale, and never spoke, so he was like a doll. He was passive and didn’t even react when he was mocked or laughed at, which made him all the more unappreciated and unworthy of the majesty and dignity of a prince.
But now was different.
“Nice to meet you. Baikal.”
He knew how to smile softly despite his pale complexion. He was flawless, except for the intriguing way he spoke.
Facing the powerful golden eyes, Baikal’s expression twitched.
‘Is this really The Heron Prince?’
