The Start of Her Return (12)
The rest of the group was left on the bridge as I brought Seol Min-Joon and Kim Tae-Byeong with me. Honestly, it was not paramount to bring Seol Min-Joon along, but to have him around could reduce risks to the lowest level, and I also wanted to let him have some kill contribution. He would be a great team member if he was trained well.
“C, C, Can I do it well?”
Kim Tae-Byeong was quite the coward. He had quite a weak mentality to be a tank. Unfortunately, neither Seol Min-Joon or I had the patience to console him, so he was ignored.
“You must do it.”
“Y, Yes!”
Kim Tae-Byeong’s footsteps became more cautious as he approached the oiled whale. Since it was nearly deaf, it would be alright to make a slight rustle, but Kim Tae-Byeong’s back broke out into sweat whenever he made a tiny sound.
“You remember my words, right? You must go as close to it as possible.”
It seemed forever as Kim Tae-Byeong carefully and slowly approached the monster. It was a tedious and painful process to watch. That dreadful stench grew as I watched him close on it and made my insides churn.
As I stood at the pre-arranged position, I observed the oiled whale up close. Its eyes barely remained open under those layers of hide, and the oily mucus which covered its skin looked so repulsive that I didn’t want to touch it. Traces of oil were left on the tracks of where it had gone, much like a slug.
I closed and opened my eyes. A streak of blue light formed, and space coordinates appeared in a flash. Sometimes, it felt like augmented reality. Would you understand if I said that I felt similar to a detailed 3D modeling?
I utilized my mana as I honed into the position which I would arrive at.
As my body was lifted, I could also feel my body being broken down and reassembled delicately. I opened my eyes, and that repulsive stench rushed into the mucous membrane of my nose. I wanted to vomit right away, but I had something else I had to do.
Ziiiik!
The lighter created a lilting sound.
The oiled whale registered my presence immediately, and at the moment when it swung its body, I shouted, “Now!”
Thud!
Kim Tae-Byeong repeatedly tapped the iron plate, which now had a hole from the Hornet, on the floor. Thud thud! Like a march, vibrations spread out like waves through the ground. The kero whale’s senses were concentrated on his end. I then threw the fired lighter immediately.
Flick, as the lighter flew and formed an arc, landing on the whale’s body,
Growl, groan!
I rolled twice away from the whale as soon as the surging flames came into sight. Kim Tae-Byeong immediately came to my aid and blocked the flames. Whoosh! The whale burned in its oil as it released a spine chilling scream.
“Ugh.”
The fire sparks splattered onto me, even as I hid behind Kim Tae-Byeong. The heat from the flames would be much worse for him. I quickly got up from my position.
“Let’s go.”
Kim Tae-Byeong nodded, as he patted down his hot cheeks with the hems of his clothes.
Seol Min-Joon handed me the lighter without words. It was an extra lighter that I had brought along in case we needed it. Had I failed at the first attempt, Seol Min-Joon would have thrown it. He would have to return with sad news if Kim Tae-Byeong and I both had died, but regardless, it wasn’t a pleasant role to take on.

“Great job.” Kwon Sung-Min said as we returned to the group. I nodded in response and started to set off once more. We would soon arrive at the indoor sports stadium after we crossed this bridge.
“I wanted to be of some help too…”
As he scractched his nape and with no other words to continue, Kwon Sung-Min looked like an honest and reliable young man. But, you can’t be too quick to trust others.
Even if someone looked kind on the outside, you wouldn’t know if they carried the title of ‘A Two-Faced Gentleman.’
